Not sure how everyone is writing Coneygree off because he lost against 2 of the very best novices at their ideal trip? As wellchief said, he just got done for the turn of speed. He is a great each way price for the Albert Bartlett now.
As for him only being a mudlark that needs heavy going, he won a bumper on gd/sft? Watch the way he quickened up from Aerial at Cheltenham while giving him 7lbs in only his 3rd hurdles start. Aerial is no mug, he's a horse who has been placed in the paddy power and won a chase off 149. He showed that day that stamina is his day and he has many big races in him in the future. |

Against the best performers which is what he'll be racing against he won't be effective on anything other than bad ground because his knee action is so exaggerated, put simply, on better ground you want his hooves coming into contact with the ground a lot quicker than his does as they'd spend too long in the air while other horses are getting propulsion off the quicker ground, have a look at yesterdays run and compare his action to the other two main ones, there's are far less pronounced, having said that I don't think we'll ever see him on anything like good ground, he'd be left behind in the end.

Probably wasn't at his best on Saturday but definitely over the wrong trip against 2 quicker horses. At Fishers Cross a worthy favourite for the horse but I'm pretty sure we didn't see the real Coneygree on Saturday and he wasn't punished when his chance had gone. That could be crucial in March.

people can argue about the trip but ultimately he was disappointing on saturday on his favoured ground... finding very little when challenged imo... very disappointing effort and wouldn't surprise me if there was something amiss and he didn't turn up at the festival

it had no chance at that trip against those horses on Saturday, its got a front running style
wasn't going to hold off the speed horses over that trip, still a very likeable horse over the longer trip. |

At fishers cross wants 3 miles just like coneygree but was still able to win at this trip, it was his staying power that ran down the new one, so coneygree can't have that excuse.

no excuses from coneygree, its a lot better horse at the longer trip,at fishers cross had
a superior running style in that race at that trip, jockey won that race, the new one is better horse imo |

Think he was exposed as the horse he is to be honest.

Duffy...I disagree with you....having your hooves hitting the ground quicker and getting more propulsion will be better off for any horse in any ground. A high knee action only shows that the horse comes out of the ground better as it is pulled out quicker and faster than that of a horse that does not like bad ground. That does not mean that the horse will do this always on quicker ground.....the horse (if it takes to quicker ground will adapt to it and will not lift its knee as high as the hoof is not getting bogged down and comes out of the ground easier). This is why some horse can act on any ground and some only prefer one extreme or the other etc.

The ground is soft IS, not knee deep which is what he needs.

in what I believe will be a wide open gold cup I would like to see him be given an entry he was only 1.5 seconds slower than conti and he appeared to be eased close home

race fell apart, not coneygrees fault, he still beat the usefull yardstick virak by half the track, was very impressed

Looking forward to seeing this fella run out of novice company tomorrow - they've definitely chucked him in the deep end.
If he is there or thereabouts it can only be a positive for the RSA. Houblon will be a good benchmark in this race given his proximity to the Young Master, and his Hennessey run with Many Clouds. Although the Young Master was getting chunks of weight, so if Coneygree can get close to, or even beat Houblon, he must be getting towards RSA favouritism imo. |

^ Although no doubt Kings Palace will get shortened when he wins a 3 runner mickey mouse race at 1/7 tomorrow.

I'm on Coneygree at 25/1 for RSA. My worry is he wins here and they go for The Gold Cup, so have had a saver @ 90 on here for that. I think its too much for an inexperienced novice to go against the big boys at Cheltenham but he does look good. Will be some performance to win tomorrow and as we speak I favour HDO.
Very exciting though. |

If I had a big RSA AP voucher on him I'd definitely be cheering him today.
There's no way they'll run him in a Gold Cup in round four weeks no matter what he does. If he and Kings Palace win today, Coneygree should be a shorter price, but I doubt he will. I'm on Coneygree today, but not a penny on any horse in the RSA yet. I'm a little bit tempted to put a small amount on the today and RSA double, then I can join you guys in the 25/1 club. |

although I had a bet on Harry Topper, the way Coneygree jumped every fence made me feel so good that I couldn't be upset on losing the bet. Should be odds on for RSA based on this performance. Much stronger form in behind than any other single odds RSA opponents.

Very tricky one to weigh up now for betting purposes as the connections are likely to be more tempted by the Gold Cup route than most others would be, and for all that it was a serious performance today, you'd still have to worry a bit about the ground if it was a good bit quicker. Lovely horse though and really great to watch. Lexus and Irish Hennessy next year will be right up his street!

I suppose having had problems with the horse before they're looking to make hay while the sun shines. Rarely works out well for novices in the CGC though, I'd rather see him in the RSA and would be pretty confident he would beat Kings Palace - how good the ones from over the water are, remains to be seen.

Mark Bradstock said on TV would be confirmed for both to keep options open. Can't blame them for thinking Gold Cup but when novices are being considered for this I always think of poor Gloria Victis.
