quite impressed with it today jumped for fun! But not sure whether having a prep run 34 days before the Gold cup is ideal..Maybe the stats boys can confirm the last Gold Cup winner who ran so close to the race?

Teaspoon, it's been quite a while, a full year in fact. Lord W had a prep 34 days before he won the Gold Cup.

Not forgetting that both Denman and Kauto won todays race en route to winning in March. I see little other realistic option. The horse hasn't been the most sound and he's just smashed several 160 ish rated chasers and jumped like a buck. Gold all the way in my view.

I've no bets in either race but can totally understand why a small outfit like the Bradstocks might choose to run in a very open Gold Cup when they have an 8yo in the form of his life.
I bet King's Palace connections hope Coneygree goes Gold Cup route because otherwise KP will be taken on for the lead by a horse who jumps better than he does and with the memory of what happened to him in the Albert Bartlett last year fresh in the memory - on the other hand, the other leading contenders in the RSA might fancy their chances of swooping late if KP and Coneygree go at it hammer and tongs from the off. In terms of a pure spectacle, I'd love to see him and Conti going for it but, of course,Nicholls is canny enough to hatch Plan B for Conti. Maybe a lazy comparison, but Carruthers best Gold Cup effort was his first one at age 7.He'll be 9 by March 2016, may not be in same form,may not even be sound (God forbid - but he's just had a year off).For me, his time is now. |

Why the rush? the gold cup can be won by 10-11 yo's, important thing now is to secure a great race that he's really capable of winning which is the RSA. Going against at least 3-4 top class horses in the gold cup seems the worst choice. He was very impressive today but lets learn to walk before running, secure a big win this season and there will be plenty years left to try and conquer the GC.

I'd run him in the Gold Cup, reason alot of novices don't is because of occasionally shoody jump, jumping is this lads greatest asset.

no 10yo has won Gold Cup since 1998, no 11yo has won since 1962 though the appropriately named What A Myth was 12 when winning in 1969.The last 2 winners were 8yo - 7 of last 10 winners were 8yo or younger - in fairness, a 10yo was short head from winning last season and plenty of the leading contenders this year are 9 plus.
His age is not an issue, his lack of top class chasing experience might well be though as Howdi says, he jumps fantastically. Not sure how many - if any - winners there have been with as few chase starts as him but it's only really convention that makes people reluctant to embrace the prospect of a novice running - I respect the views of those referring to what happened to Gloria Victis but I think a novice running adds to the race as a spectacle precisley because it is a rare occurence. A cursory glance at list of recent winners also suggests that most put up their best effort at their first attempt in Gold Cup - that could just as easily be next year but who knows whether he'll be in the same place as a racehorse then as he is now. |

I envy you IS - I'll only get so see him in the flesh if he runs in the RSA as it goes - loved Dickie's quote that 'he jumped the fences like they were hurdles!'.

Dorans Pride was a good third as a novice.
Dawn Run won it on her 5th chase start. With Gloria Victis, he was a second season novice. This was his 7th start over fences. AP was quoted as saying his fall was caused by an injury rather than his injury caused by a fall so him being a novice had really nothing to do with it. I also believe Coneygree's participation in the Gold Cup this year would add to the race as a spectacle, I think he is hugely exciting and has a big, big chance on going with the word soft in it. His jumping today was fantastic and I believe he is ready for the test. |

The only mistake he made was when deckie didnt give him any instruction into the fence, mostly deckie was superb and very suited to him, so if nico cant ride him at least he has a good back up. Good post beryl. At Coneygree's age and the strength of the 3mile staying division makes the GC an easier race than the RSA imo, clearly Coneygree needs some cut so i would be happy if he missed the festival all together if the ground was wrong. |

Bradstock did say afterwards on C4, they may well give The Festival a miss altogether if the ground comes up on the quick side.
Just watched it again and it's noticeable how he turned it on from 5 out, Unioniste was completely outpaced but stayed on past all the others except HDO because they'd been battered into submission. S'pose you could argue TDS don't stay, DR not good enough, HT not good enough but HDO sets a solid standard and looked to run close to his mark to me. |

Assuming Dynaste ran up to his form last time and on a line through HDO then Coneygree has a great chance in the Gold cup as there cannot be much between him and SC and Coneygree looks better suited to Cheltenham. Would be a strong favourite to win the RSA but why not go for the gold cup in an open year as there is plenty of place money even if not good enough to win

Unless the ground is proper soft, he'll have very little chance in a gold cup, or the rsa for that matter, he's got a very pronounced soft ground action and with his injury to factor in as well, it looks like a last instalment mark 2.

I really hope he goes RSA as he would win me money if he won,but I think it's a real tough decision they have to make,and could not blame them at all if they chose Gold Cup.
As said though the main worry is the ground,and unless it's on the soft side I just cannot see them risking him. I think the comments about the Lexus and Irish Hennessey are valid,also the King George would be a nice race for him. Would be awful if they chose to run on decentish ground at the festival and he got injured. The future bright alright but only if he's sound. |

I'd share that view. Gold Cup on good to soft or softer or wait for his conditions. There are a lot of good races to be picked up outside the festival.

That is another argument for saying that it may be Gold Cup or bust. Softer ground horses don't often get their conditions these days. If he has them in March he may never get them again.

Another thing of course is whether they actually think hes a chance of winning the Gold Cup.
This years race is imo going to be a brutal one.Reckon we could have 15 or so runners and a lot have at least place claims. Would they want to put him in a race like that as a novice?,or run in a far easier race. Intriguing stuff. |

Well they were a class apart my friend,but this years race has a lot of horses fairly equal with only Conti looking like he could be a class apart and maybe RTR.Looking at the probable runners theres a lot with chances and they are real tough horses some of them.

Yeh,i cant have him at all at those prices in a Gold Cup,but he is one that could be a class apart if he does what he did at Kempton......I don't think he will in a Gold Cup,but hes proved he can elsewhere,so he may.

Mine too, but apparently he had ulcers,and no cheekpieces.
Although that never prevented him from winning at Aintree.Did he have cheekpieces on at Aintree??,dont know myself. His Kempton run has a lot raving,fair enough, he was impressive,but he wont be running over 3m at Kempton next month. |

I rate Houblon and for Coneygree to do that to him on only his third start made it a magnificent run to my eyes. I'd have no hesitation in running him in the Gold Cup. I didn't think last year's race amounted to much and it's mostly the same horses this year.
