SS has had a breathing op since the Supreme Novices run.

Way,way to early to be suggesting who will and wont battle up the finish!! SS only had one start ffs.

Thrilled to see him come back and look in such good nick - also happy as it adds that extra edge to the Arkle. Now we don't just have two very good ones, we have three, but more importantly, we have the extra dilemma as to whether speed or stamina wins the day.

Was hugely impressed with his enthusiasm and toe today, although we learned nothing new about his ability. However, one minor concern I had was that he was a bit brave at some of them. He is super athletic but didn't look a natural to me, and of the three I'd say I'd have a slight worry about his jumping holding up at Cheltenham. That said, the others have had twice the experience and it is way too early to be worrying unduly about that. I'd just want him to be a little more conventional next time.

I agree with Budd on this one. Sprinter Sacre looks a horse of immense potential, however on what we know to this point he is the one with a question mark over the hill. That doesn't mean he can't and won't answer that question in March, but I think Budd's concern is valid on known form.

Didn't look a natural, really?

Has looked all over a chaser since day one, today confirmed it. Quite literally jumped like a stag.

Dont agree.
I can suggest opinion at any stage of the season.
If i feel more confident about PC and AF staying up the hill better than SS i am entitled to say that.
I have given my reasoning why i feel that may be the case, but also stated that SS may well get up the hill fine.
None of us know what will happen, but See absolutely nowt wrong with trying to work out which of the 3 is more likely to win the race.
Getting up the hill could well be vital in this race cos its hard imo to seperate them, and imo from what i have seen of all 3 horses in their careers so far i would have PC and AF in a battle more than i would have SS.
I may be wrong of course, but this forum is a lot about suggestions and getting things right and wrong.

frequently hurdles ratings are the best way to separate runners in the Arkle. Peddlers was clearly the best over hurdles and I expect him to come out on top

don't forget, in 11 races under rules only one horse has managed to beat him and that was Hurricane Fly so you need to be very special. Peddlers at this stage a clear and strong favourite irrespective of what they have done over fences to date
By:
buddeliea
When: 09 Dec 11 20:55
Peddlers had 2 seasons over Hurdles, who knows what rating AF and SS could have got had they done the same.
Fact is they are all now chasing and its how they cope with that and jump a fence that will decide the Arkle.

When I say he didn't look like a natural to me, I should probably have said he was a bit big and bold for my liking. Depends very much on your personal opinion as to what constitutes a good chasing style, especially for a novice at Cheltenham. I prefer the economical, neat style of Peddlers to an extravagant one of Sprinter Sacre (and I know this is based on one very promising debut, so am not knocking him really). Just think there is less to go wrong with the former style. If you are wrong at a downhill fence when the tempo is increasing, I think you can get into more trouble with an extravagant leap than a fiddly one.

I've watched last seasons Supreme a dozen times, and even though SS stumbled after the last he didn't pick up that much when he met the rising ground, he was quite one paced. Prior to that and today, we have only seen him beat trees on relatively flat tracks.

So to have doubts about him at Prestbury Park is fair enough at this stage of his career. I'd like to see him run on the course before the Arkle.
By:

And for what it's worth, I have one or two doubts as to whether Al Ferof will have the pace to go with them if the ground is good. Stamina is a big part of any Arkle winner's arsenal but in Sprinter we clearly have a speedy beat that will have plenty off the bridle from a way out if they let him, and in Peddlers Cross we have a stout stayer and battler with the speed to keep himself on terms with the likes of Hurricane Fly. Not sure whether Al Ferof has that ability yet.

He certainly gave them some clearance tomdeane, and he fiddled an early one which I like to see from a novice.

yes but Peddlers produced superb hurdles form the year before winning the RSA hurdle as well as going close to winning a CH. If we are looking for ways to separate these runners then I suggest hurdles ratings as a way to do so at this stage. Subsequent events may show that to be an incorrect premise but at least it is something solid to base an opinion on. Anything else is just "opinion" based on not much more than visual impression imo.

It is unlikely that any of these horses are going to show anything like the form required to win an Arkle before the big day so how are you gonna decide? As I say, PC achieved the most over hurdles and the Arkle has often been won by the highest rated hurdler in the field. That adds up to enough for me.
By:

When: 09 Dec 11 21:06
^ Very good assessment in my opinion. The at this stage is crucial - I think right now it is hard to argue otherwise but in time the other pair might prove to be better chasers.
By:

When: 09 Dec 11 21:11
I wont use Hurdles ratings to decide chase races,i never have.Just my feeling on how they will get on over fences, and then watching them jump them.
I'm fine with that.
By:

When: 09 Dec 11 21:20
Couldn't agree more Bud, and backing the highest rated hurdler in the field would not have found you the winner the past two renewals of the Arkle.
By:

When: 09 Dec 11 21:25
that was in hindsight knowing the result and Sizing Europe was a very highly rated hurdler, as was Tidal Bay, MWDS, Moscow Flyer and plenty others.

The point is about ranking them NOW when they have not had the chance to show their best efforts over fences because they are still facing easier tasks and gaining experience. You think any of them are worth ranking higher than PC AT THIS STAGE then please give me an objective reason why. If not you are guessing (which you are entitled to do of course but where is the justification?)
By:

Was Sizing Europe not the highest rated hurdler? Not trying to back up the ratings/trend argument as its only one thing to consider, but felt sure Sizing Europe was highest rated

Judo the one flaw with your argument is that if you base everything on what is known then you aren't allowing for improvement, and using any real initiative to work out what could happen. Form in the book is the starting point no doubt, but if it was that easy we'd all be rich
By:

OK, I'll give u my take on the Arkle picture atm. I think AF is on top, purely because I have seen him jump when having a race, he can cope with the pressure and jump well.

Peddlars on the other hand has had two very soft races, where his jumping has not come under any pressure whatsoever, what do any of us know will happen when he comes under pressure. Chasing is diferent to hurdling.

Both these horses can handle the course and the festival, and trained by the best in the business. PC is a higher rated hurdler but AF is a novice and has never had the chance to gain a rating that high, he copuld be better? He failr bounded upm the hill in the Supreme.

SS is priced on potential, and we need to see more, and I'd love to see him run again at prestbury park.

The rest need to show more.

I have never said that Al Ferof is a better chaser than PC or has more chance of winning the Arkle so i dont need to give a reason.
I thought to myself that Al Ferof was a real Cheltenham horse that looks a future chaser and decided that 14 was a good price.
He has now shown me he can jump fences well, and even better, at Cheltenham and Sandown, which is a bonus.Hes now half the price.
Will he win the Arkle,is he a better chaser than PC or SS even?? Dont know, but happy with my position, and i can back one of the other favs at some time should i choose.

I am all about looking for improvement but I am not gonna guess based on nothing more than impressions in weak races that have little to do with the white hot competition of the Festival. In this case, Peddlers is my benchmark and until someone shows me something to threaten him I am going to assume he is clearly the best. I won't be betting til much closer or indeed on the day when all the information is available. I reserve the right to change my mind right up to the last minute. However, at this stage all the evidence suggests PC is clearly the most likely winner
By:
buddeliea
When: 09 Dec 11 21:44
Trouble with that is all that evidence is over Hurdles, and this is a chase.Their is no chase form that puts PC ahead of AF.

We have to guess a bit to get better prices, and nothing better than going with your feelings, impressions etc and seeing them being proved right.Yes,you can get some wrong, but thats a big part of Cheltenham to me.

Assuming a horse is clearly the best sounds dangerous when punting to me.

I'm a ratings man pure and simple, have been for 30+  years and has stood me in tremendous stead over those years. I find it very improbable that any of these potential opponents would have the base ability to get that close to Hurricane Fly in a CH... and that tells me PC has a class edge in terms of pure ability and probably quite a large one. Jumping will determine whether that is significant enough to see him win - if he jumps slickly he will be very hard to beat and we can't know what he will do there any more than the others. Some of the best jumpers ever managed to fall sometimes or put in a bad round. Don't get me wrong, AF and SS strike me as serious contenders and at this stage would fit the profile of a typical Arkle winner.
By:

When: 10 Dec 11 06:43
Fair enough Judo,we have different approaches. No doubt it works for us sometimes and sometimes not.
For me a big part of CHeltenham is having a go early to nab some good prices and seeing how they go throughout the season. If they fail thats part of the game and accepted, but if they dont,i have ammunition to play with when the festival gets near.
I love the festival, but the build up,which for me starts November is a big part of it as well.

By the way mate,if this was the CHurdle without HF and we had the same 3 horses at the top of the betting,i would still give Al Ferof a fair chance against PC.Hes the improver and maybe dont need to improve that much as that was a good Supreme,as is being proved.

When he met fences on a stride, SS jumped better than any first time novice I can remember but the test will be when he meets one on the wrong stride with top class horses upsides. The Arkle is often decided by which of the leading contenders makes a mistake on the way round.

To not consider hurdle form for novice chasers is absolutely baffling to my mind- how else can you gauge a horse's inherent racing ability? Whether over hurdles or fences, the inherent ability of the racehorse is   the foremost consideration and the improvement for going over fences is what we can speculate. If you took a 90 rated hurdler and a Champion hurdle winner against each other in their first novice chase, there is a reason that the Champion hurdler will be a far shorter price than the 90 rated rag, and that is because the CHurdler is simply a better racehorse, whether there are hurdles or fences in the way. Seems completely blind to ignore hurdle form as a pointer, while it isn't the be all and end all to ignore it is just baffling. Imo Wink

Having been all over Peddlers like a rash, Sprinter has got me very worried indeed, really impressed me yesterday.

Hurdles form can never be ignored but look at Join Together beating Champ Court & Mossley today. Probs 3rd best over hurdles. Back on topic mega pleased with Sprinter Sacre. He will have to improve a lot throughout the season I think to win the Arkle but he's shown the right signs fto. Personally win or lose would love to see him chucked into the deep end before the Arkle. He needs a tough race to wise him up a bit but that's just my opinion.

I think Buddelea is being a bit beligerent here tbh. You would not have backed Al Ferof for the Arkle had he not won the Supreme Novices ffs! So clearly you do take notice of hurdle form.

I get the point about PC being able to give HF a run for his money, but as previously pointed out, that was in his second season over hurdles. SS and Af never had that opportunity so in terms of progression you can argue these two have the most upside. Unless, of course, you think PC would have bustled up HF when he was a Novice !?
By:
buddeliea
When: 11 Dec 11 08:51
Me,beligerent??

OK,lets get this straight.
Al Ferof is a born chaser that used his hurdles season as a stepping stone, and winning the supreme was a bonus for connections.Had he ran well and not won i would have still had a look at him for the Arkle.
When he won the supreme he showed me that he is a Cheltenham horse and one to have on your side wherever he goes the following season,They decided the Arkle which distance imo is perfect for him at this stage of his career.
Yes,his hurdles form is good to have and i do take notice, but his hurdles rating is not the reason why i am backing him for the Arkle.
Sometimes you watch a horse and think, now thats a chaser, and then to get a price you may have to take a risk and go with yer gut feeling.
As Judo said, all i had was hurdles form, thats true, but i also had a gut feeling about the horse, and i acted on that and thats why i got 14 before his debut.Had i waited i would have 7's.
As i have said, sometimes that goes pear shaped, have to accept its part of it,but when it comes off not only do you have a good price, its also a good feeling to know you got it right and beat the bookie.

Lat season i backed Finians Rainbow for the Arkle i think at about 32 on here. His hurdle rating i imagine(as you will probably realise i dont know!!)would not have been that high,Ok he failed to win but it did enable me to be in a real good position on the race.
The horse is now fancied to be a Champion Chaser.
His hurdles form certainly dont suggest that.
I have never said i ignore Hurdles form, just that the hurdles rating is not the reason i back a chaser.

Having seen Al Ferof for the first time at Sandown, to my (very untrained, borderline ignorant eye) I Really didn't see what makes him a standout better chaser than hurdler; he didn't strike me as overly big and scopey at all, not like Knight Pass for example who you could see from a mile off would be interesting over fences.

Like I say though, I'm possibly talking nonsense here but it's what struck me!

Agree Joist.

I just find it hard to believe punters ignore hurdles form/ratings when looking for an Arkle contender, of all races!!

We'll move on.

Budd, I too was on FR last season.  This years similarly framed beast is Sacre from the same yard Wink

Know what you mean Joist. When he walked into the paddock he did not strike me as a big imposing sort at all,bit disappointed to be honest, especially when a bit later i saw Sizing Europe walk in!! Blimey that is one impressive looking horse.
Al Ferof must have some engine though, and the main thing for me is that hes proved he can jump well round Sandown and more importantly re the Arkle,he can jump well round Cheltenham.

Sint, you werent on FR cos of his hurdles rating, pretty sure of that mate.
And i dare say Judo was on Medermit, must have been about a stone better rated than FR i should think.
