Showed his pace well in winning the Neptune at the Festival. The race didn't really suit the more obvious stayers in the field, with only a moderate pace in the early stages. I hoped he would go for the Arkle after that. Showed he could adapt well to racing off a sounder surface than he had encountered in Ireland. Not sure he needs the extended distance or would be especially suited by it, but it would be good to see him at the Festival whichever race he goes for.

Mullins will keep this info to himself until the last minute, as he always does with his novices. He's no interest in keeping punters up to date with his thoughts.

If punters arent told until late with this one and they assume a race there will be literally hundreds of thousands of pounds of working mens money flushed down the toilet in an instant if they guess the wrong race. Yes that isnt the trainers problem but Racing for Change is a drop in the ocean re punters allegiances to racing over other sports compared to things like this.

Even if they arent sure until he is in a race an update just to say he will run in either the RSA or Arkle would at least put punters right who are assuming the RSA due to rumours.

25-1 massive for The Arkle for a Neptune winner who's always shown loads of pace. Stable has Quel Esprit and others for the RSA and seem to think he's a Gold Cup horse. If so, can't see them wanting to bottom him over 3 miles when he's not run for nearly 2 years and very unlikely to have many more runs beforehand.

I'd say that's why he's 25-1. He was the best novice hurdler of 2008/9, has top class winning festival form which is red hot and trained and ridden by 2 of the best. Mullins said he's well, he was entered to run in a Grade 1 at Fairyhouse so you have to make up your own mind I guess but I'd have him on my side in a race where the front of the market is made up of horses without festival form anywhere near as good as his.

Not sure about the festival form to be honest,beating Karabak which had a dodgy ride to say the least,not exactly a worldbeater is Karabak.Not top class form in my book,nor is beating Cousin Vinny!!
At least the front of the market has horses we know can jump a fence. 25 for a horse that has yet to jump a fence,been off the track for ages and may not even run in race. Good luck. |

Tending to agree with Buddeledia here. All bets are off until we at least see the horse jump a fence or two. The Drinmore has been put back now until Dec 8, we will know a lot more then and I suspect Willie Mullins will too.

Who was 3rd in that race budd? Diamond harry is the answer. China rock realt dubh the nightingale all in behind too. He laughed at pandorama too. Maybe u should look at more than the 2nd in the race when studying form.

My thoughts entirely. Much better form and, most importantly, at the festval, rather than horses who've been there and failed yet are half his price.

None of them are world beaters either.i looked at all he beat,just chose the horse that got closest,and he has been distinctly average really since then.
By the way all those horses you mention are stayers and probably at handicap level. |

He can only beat what has been put in front of him and so far he has done that, im a believer until he is beaten. Btw china rock pandorama realt dubh and the nightingale have all won graded races. I think he will go for the sun-alliance anyway.

No doubt he's top class both on form and the way he won. Just wonder if there's time to get him ready for 3 miles at this stage. Where would Mullins send his other 3 milers if he goes here?

Like you Boost,i have no idea where he will run,and Mullins wont be telling us in a hurry thats for sure.
For all we know he might even be thinking about the Gold Cup!! Just too many unknowns for my liking. He might turn out to be a great chaser over 2m up to 3m,who knows,i just aint sure enough to part with any money on him at the current price for the Arkle. |

Let's calm down and put this idea to bed that staying horses aren't fast enough for 2 miles at the festival. Istabraq was a Sun Alliance Hurdle winner and Peddler's Cross is a Neptune winner yet had the speed to beat last year's Champion Hurdler and perhaps the fastest Grade1/Grade 2 hurdler around in Starluck on Saturday. If you've got the class you stay and you need to stay further to win any festival race.
Arthur, Fionnegas and Fiveforthree are the other 2 I was thinking about but the latter is obviously difficult to get right. |

Booster,you are correct,some novice hurdlers over 2 and half can be quick enough over 2,thats been proved as you say,i'm on Peddlers for the CH.
MD may well be one of them as well,of course.I was just pointing out that imo those he beat as a novice hurdler were virtually all stayers,as one might expect in the longer novice race at Chelt.That does not mean MD is not quick enough for a 2m Arkle,i realise that,but it seemed that that form was being used as a reason to fancy him for the Arkle,i aint so sure. I have said that his hurdle form,along with, i have never seen him over fences and he has been absent for ages,are reasons why i personally would not back him at current price for Arkle. |

Buddeliea, if you have a big price on Peddlers Cross, well done, he's going to take all the beating.
However, on the Finian's Rainbow thread you are raving about a defeat of Hell's Bay over 2 miles and hailing it "the best 2 mile chasing performance of the season". I can't help feeling you're not thinking straight there. I know which form anybody who follows racing would say is stronger and defeating Karabak and Diamond Harry without hardly coming off the bridle is in a different stratosphere. I didn't back him, I was on my favourite horse , Diamond Harry, who's definitely not slow and will probably now be rated the 4th highest rated chaser on these shores after Newbury. |

Yeh ok Boost.
Lets put it this way if i may. MD winning the hurdle at Chelt is stronger form than FR beating Hells bay in relation to the beaten horses,i agree. But one was a hurdle race over 2 and half,the other a 2m novice chase,and the Arkle is a 2m novice chase. Whilst hurdle form is useful when judging a novice chaser,so is knowing a horse can travel and jump well in a 2m novice chase. I would not say i was raving,personally,but i did think it was impressive fto over fences,and i genuinely think its the best 2m chase performance i have seen so far-as a novice that is,i should stipulate. |

OK, I think we all know our positions at the moment and may be better to wait until after Christmas when the main protagonists have run again but I've enjoyed the debate and can see from all points of view.
Hoping to have some funds in the bank from Planet of Sound in King George and Dance Island in Welsh National by then to help with stakes. |
