Nice one, good question and good story ribero. You were certainly there during the golden era for hurdlers.

thats the thing zilzal,i appreciate i might have been a bit of an exception in those days but gamblers have always find money to bet with,it basically highlights how far behind racing has gone,as an on course bookie nowadays you say to yourself every week that the average bet is probably no more than the 70s/80s,the amount of £2 etc about is unbelievable when you think what most of the population will waste money on nowadays, yes this place has taken a lot of the big gamblers away but imo its more to do that racing just isnt up there in this generations minds like it used to be.

Cue Card wins the Supreme but has no chance with Menorah, in a stronger run Champion Hurdle he will beat him further. Now Binocular knows who is going to put it up to him.

Undoubtedly the one to beat in March

Menorah certainly won on merit and the way he cut through round the home turn was remarkable. Cue Card has just run one of the Champion Hurdle favourites to four and a half lengths off level weights. That's a terrific achievement given he's only four and didn't settle with the slow early pace. (I've never understood the point of running a pacemaker that hares off with nothing behind it the gets in the way as it tires). I'm certain there's more improvement to come and he's proved he's worth his place in the big one come March. I'm happy to wait until plans are confirmed but it certainly seemed rude not to take some of the prices offered after the race as 35-40 points was a far bigger differential to the favourite than the winning distance suggested it should be.

he surprised me by how well he ran and he sets the standard for the supreme but i dident like that he found nothing off the bridle and he is clearly not however young going to be the next arkle as some have sed on here.as i said would happen he gave menorah a good lead to the last(well near enough) and then menorah scooted clear colin tizzard looked very dissaponted and gutted too.he will be tough to beat in the supreme but he is vunerable now we know his limits
By:

When: 11 Dec 10 19:50
well...his limits being he couldn't beat menorah off levels!!!....cue card ran a very good race considering it was his 3rd run over hurdles...he was last off the bridle and i wouldn't say that he found nothing off the bridle, he did jump the last well and then managed to fend off the nicholls horse....who himself ran a great race conceding weight....nicholls was far from downcast after that performance.

i personally thought he ran well today cos ive never bought into the hype about talk of him being this superstar better than arkle and all that and today he wasant good enough end of story menorah murdered him.as they turned in he was going the best but dident find a great deal as the third horse is slower than me and how pumpkin hed thinks he can reverse form with menorah is ridiculous he made him look like a selling plater

yes he does set a good standard but now we know exactly how good he is a 155-160 rated horse.there will be a lot of horses come supreme time who no one knows how good there going to be

Cue Card came off 3rd best at the weights in the Bula. If you also add into the mix Binocular, Peddlers Cross, Khyber Kim, Hurricane Fly, Go Native then Cue Card is massive odds on to be unplaced in a Champion Hurdle this season.

Provided he shows no ill effects for a novice in such a tough race yesterday he will in a normal year have a lot in hand to win a Supreme Novices Hurdle, however dont under-estimate how much yesterdays race could have affected him physically and mentally, first time beaten and first time pushed beyond his comfort zone. If he is ok after it I think he can win the Supreme Novices Hurdle and then come back, like Menorah, a stronger horse next season.

Nicholls is normally level headed and his comment about running the Bula again a different day would be a different result is the most baffling I have heard from him. Menorah won with so much in hand and everyone can see that think it shows his lack of skill with 2 mile hurdlers which is a big gap on his cv.

They said before the race they wouldn't make a decision until Christmas. I wouldn't be surprised if they defer that now. They've also said his next race will be February. There is no way on earth that will be a novice hurdle. As they said before the Bula, what would that prove? That was before he has run within 4.5 lengths of the Champion Hurdle favourite off levels. The two possible races in February are therefore the Tote Gold Trophy and the Kingwell.
There is natural disappointment at an unbeaten bubble having being burst but talk of one defeat finishing a horse is nonsense. I think he'll learn from it and will settle next time. As for him finding nothing off the bridle, well that's plain ridiculous and does the horse (and Menorah) a disservice. When SC came to him he found more and was pulling away from that horse as they came to the line. My guess is that they'll look for improvement in February. If there is none apparent then it's the supreme because if he doesn't improve he obviously doesn't beat Menorah. That horse deserves to be favourite and I don't see Hobbs being scared of any of the bunch you mention below.

He is well odds on to be unplaced in the Champion Hurdle coming off only 3rd best yesterday and this will be moved way down the finishing order once you have the other leading contenders in the race. He doesnt have the finishing pace to win a Champion Hurdle in the same way Silviniaco doesnt.

I think they will put Cue Card in a novice trial now to see how he should be ridden in that class of race. Do they ride him prominently, you wouldnt say he had an electric turn of foot yesterday the way Menorah left him standing still so even in novice company you dont want to leave him with too much to do if something breaks from the front. Do they drop him in behind and cruise through knowing he should be able to hold an advantage to the line.

The Supreme is by no means a walk-over for him they will need to judge it tactically spot on or he will be beaten in that. We saw what Menorah did in the race last season can he do the same?

We all know what a cert Dunguib was meant to be last year (not to me I was massacred on here for questioning his effectiveness on faster ground and jumping before the race) and up pops subsequent Champion Hurdle fav Menorah to stuff him. Is there a horse to surprise Cue Card this season, Supreme Novice Hurdles are called that for a reason no horse is handed it on a plate. A real challenge for connections to win the Supreme Novices Hurdle imo.

dont know why you were massacred, even the trainer was worried about his jumping, hence why they ran him wide and lost lengths in the process. It did seem a lot were blinded by his bumper win and beating nothing in his races in the build up.
By:

When: 12 Dec 10 12:07
I was massacred due to my comments re his speed on faster ground compared to the sluglike going he ran on in his build ups in Ireland (combined with his jumping). Also I pointed out how badly Bumper winners had done in the novice hurdles and gave detailed examples of how they had performed much better when going over fences at longer trips. Common sense and facts dont go down well on here when people cant see past their own bet in the race no matter what.

Bumer winners poor record another reason why Cue Card is up against it in a Supreme Novices let alone a Champion Hurdle. He does hurdle well though and think he can win the Supreme to dent that stat.

remember looking at the facts a few months back and i think only 5 horses that won the bumper have ended up in the supreme, with one winner. cue card's run yesterday was ridiculously good for a novice. looked to be travelling all over them too. the positive is that he'll have learnt a huge amount and that experience should see him well in the supreme. Much more confident in his supreme chances how he's had a harder race and been off the bridle.

I think that point is well made. Horses with good flat speed are a big danger in the SN if they can travel through the race well, as the early speed in the SN is often not stamina sapping enough to draw the finish out of the quicker horses. In some ways, you could make an argument for saying Cue Card would be better served by the likely faster pace in the CH, though taking other factors into consideration I think the SN route is probably more suitable for him this year.

I don't think it is really a case of him finding nothing off the bridle.  He seemed to be staying on one paced at the finish.  Perhaps he would be better at a longer trip again.  As a rule of thumb, a 2 mile bumper horse (and a stayer from the flat) will be best suited by 2 1/2 miles over hurdles and 3 miles over fences.  I think that, this time next year, he will be running in 3 mile novice chases.

"Cue Card is likely to head straight to the Cheltenham Festival without another run after confirming he is in the big league with a fine performance on Saturday."
Will be entered in Champion and Supreme and a decision will be made nearer the time. Sounds sensible.

Yes, Cue Card didn't really get chance to show what he could do off the bridle yesterday. Essentially, he was beaten by a horse that showed a superior turn of foot on the day. Menorah quickly put the race to bed when he accelerated past them going to the last hurdle. We didn't get to see a long, closely fought driving finish of the kind that would have tested how much extra Cue Card is able to find off the bridle.

Cue Card is a comparatively narrow horse. He is the kind that Mordin would say is likely to be best fresh and needs long rests between his races. That may be another point to consider when assessing his performance yesterday.

It's a bit like the stock market isn't it? Emotional over-reactions. I like the idea that they're letting the dust settle now they've proved he's a contender. I repeat that I think Menorah deserves to be favourite for the big race as he's performed well at Cheltenham three times in a row and has improved each time. That applies equally well to Cue Card who is a year younger and potentially open to more improvement. If a horse's ultimate ability can be judged on one race as Alvarado suggests, then it would have been pointless Diamond Harry turning up at Newbury after the RSA, Binocular in the Champion last year etc. etc. and you can go back as long as you want. That's racing. The best horse on the day wins.

Genuinely don't know the answer to this - which was the last Festival Bumper winner to win a championship race at a subsequent festival?

Indded, how frequently do horses who contest the bumper go on to win one of the four main raises at the festival?

When: 12 Dec 10 14:56
It wouldn't be difficult to look it up if you're that interested. I suspect you'll find a bumper winner has never run in one of the four championship races. Dato Star was entered in the Champion but was injured in his trial. You'll probably also find Montelado won the Supreme Novices Hurdle the year after his bumper in a faster time than the Champion Hurdle, Florida Pearl the Sun Alliance Chase and Monsignor the Sun Alliance Hurdle. That's as much as I carry in my head. I'm sure I'd remember if there was anything else of note as I study the bumper form every year. Like every other race at the Festival the quality of the race goes up and down. Last year's renewal threw up an exceptional horse.

Every years bumper apparently throws up an exceptional horse but how exceptional they are over hurdles says they are not exceptional enough to win a Champion Hurdle and this season will be no different imo. Dunguib will have a better chance than Cue Card in a Champion Hurdle though dont think he has the trun of pace on fast ground either.
By:

Your first sentence is written in gibberish mr underscore morris so no comment. The second isn't backed up by any evidence. I think Dunguib should be chasing as his jumping style is more suited to fences than hurdles.
