Ban On Anabolic Steroids (ARB Media Release)

In a watershed moment in the history of Australian racing, Australian Racing Board (ARB) has today announced a total ban on the use of anabolic steroids both in and out of competition.

Anabolic steroids as synthetic derivatives of the male hormone testosterone promote protein synthesis, muscle growth, red blood cell production, tissue repair after stress and injury and appetite to meet demands for additional nutrition.
Currently in Australia anabolic steroids are only prohibited in horses on race day but the new ban will apply to all Thoroughbreds from the age of 6 months with that period allowed in the interests of animal welfare.

“The ban on anabolic steroids goes far beyond any other racing jurisdiction outside of Europe and was decided by the ARB Board after lengthy consideration of veterinary and scientific advice and consultation with trainers’ and owners’ associations," ARB Chief Executive Peter McGauran said.
"The ARB has adopted a zero tolerance policy to the use of anabolic steroids in competition, training and spelling and will institute heavy penalties for breaches of the ban.

“Foremost in the Board’s consideration was the need for absolute integrity and public confidence in racing. Although the use of steroids has greatly diminished over the years to the point where they are rarely relied upon by trainers, the ARB believes it is in the best interests of the industry that they no longer be available for any purpose other than as a therapeutic treatment for young foals," Mr McGauran said.

“Racing is a sport and as such must be a test of the ability of the individual horse, its trainer and rider and not of the pharmacologist, veterinarian or sports scientist. The true spirit of competition means that no-one gets an unfair advantage which anabolic steroids can confer in certain situations.
"A new Australian Rule of Racing will be introduced on the 1st of November with the ban taking effect from 1 May, 2014 thereby giving six months for a treated horse to be free of anabolic steroids," Mr McGauran concluded.

This is big and bad news for hundreds of trainers around Australia and will now separate the real trainers from the drug trainers.

What it will also do is dramatically increase the importance of how fit horses are before the races.

I rate 88% fit to 100% super fit, I think there will be more lower ratings in fields now and that is going to make it even tougher for punters to back a fit winner.

Some trainers will be completely lost and for those that try and win their 10 or so races a year with steriods this is a death nail ruling for them.
Over the next 12 months we will see trainers take control of racing and they are the ones that I will be following because they will have a distinctive fitness advantage over lesser skilled trianers.

Great news for members who follow fitter horses.

Cheers Jim

Hypertrophic Fitness Levels:

Hypertrophic Fitness Levels is muscle on muscle fitness definitions add on a horse strength factors.

Think of Arnie in his hey day as world champion, body builders have massive levels of hypertrophic muscles strength factors.

A horse gets fit from training.

A good trainer will get a horse fit and strong.

A very good trainer will get a horse fit and strong and convert its strength factors into higher hypertrophic fitness levels ie: "A ball of muscle"

A fit horse can win a lower grade race

A fit horse with good strength factors can win a city grade race

A fit horse with good hypertrophic muscles on top of it's high strength factor muscles win Group races, it will exploded over the last 300 metres
full of running and win.

That is high hypertrophic fitness.

I posted this from a photo on facebook of the horse coming off the plane a few days before a million dollar race in USA over the weekend.

Wise Dan of what I can see is nearly 100% fit, blood count high, strength factors good, fitness good and hypertrophic levels high, would be hard to beat on this fitness level.

Could be hard to beat over the weekend in the US

He won untouched!

Fiorente if 100% super fit cannot lose the Melbourne Cup, last year he rated 98% (down 2 lengths in 100% Super fitness) and lost by 1 length.

Goes up in weight but more mature, really nice horse but needs to be 100% balanced fit on the day, as with Super Cool and Atlantic Jewel
in their target races coming up.

trouble is arnie was on the roids so his muscles were anabolically (st) enhanced  Sad

... Schwarzenegger has admitted to using performance-enhancing anabolic steroids while they were legal, writing in 1977 that "steroids were helpful to me in maintaining muscle size while on a strict diet in preparation for a contest. I did not use them for muscle growth, but rather for muscle maintenance when cutting up."[31] He has called the drugs "tissue building."

Jim ... quick question without notice

can your observations give a clue (currently) as to which horses are muscularly enhanced by the roids ?

ie  horse A  96% (but without roids)  ... horse B 98% but WITH roids

Feedback/ Reply:

It's a long story mate, have offered my services to many trainers and they generally come up with the conclusion that I know more about fitness than them, and I am talking about Group 1 trainers, no, they do not need me telling their owners how fit their horses are, that kills that.

I do not punt, that kills that.

It seems I am on my own as far as fitness accessments go around the world.

Media do not want to know me because I have the right answers, reporters do not, that kills that.

My App is a solar system away from punters understanding how fitness works, that kills that.

No, I will give out free tips which I enjoy the challenger and go punting, though I have a very thin tolerence to self control.

Thanks for words guys

Cheers Jim

And no, I have no idea what horses are on steriods and what horse are not.

Today horses I have been watching can may go well if fitter or as fit.

Bec Said No Credit has been racing on 98% plus fit, strong mare in peak form
Ville Verde, just a nice strong horse with plenty of ability
Great Esteem rated 97% fit off video has a chance in this race
Octavia can bounce back here if fitter than last start
Politeness, has a great burst of speed when asked and may peak at 98% fit today
Atlantic Jewel has heaps of fitness improvement in her and should be fitter

Lindsay Park fitness video watch import Jet Away, nice type and on 97% starts probably next week, see what class of field he strikes.
Last week we found on 97% Space Craft ($6.30 place), Fiorente and Super Cool all in the first 3 of a nice pick 4.

Today

On the small side Rose Pattern is on 96% fit
Great Esteem on 97% fit looks well and a chance
Whisper Downs on 95% will improve down the track
Gregers, a bit over rated but does look well on 97% fit

On Sunday Razzle Dazzle Rock on 97% fit look well.

Good luck and remember if you lose today it is only because you were not on the fitter
horses, which is not in the form guides....Jim

Why Atlantic Jewel lost!

The great mare went down today and as called all runs in that her low blood counts have been here biggest hurdle to peak in higher than 98% fit. Again today on only 97% fit here blood count is only 85% and her strength factors are only 90% which brings her hypertrophic levels also to 85%.

Her low blood count was directly responsible for her not sprinting away to win easily as she has done previously in lower grade races this time in.

Another point is if the trainer is adamant that here blood count is fine during the week and low on weekend can mean that she is injured and all the goodness in her nutritional levels is being eaten up to easy a pain or injury.

Green Moon, on 97% fit is looking great and his blood is ok at this stage on 90% and naturally his hypertrophic levels are down because of lack of racing on only 80%, but all in all in a good fitness levels for the Melbourne Cup.

Foreteller on 96% need to improve on his blood count 85%, fitness and strength factors both 85% to catch up to other runners today.

Ethiopia on only 96% fit has problems not with its good blood count but with strength and hypertrophic factors down to only 75% and that will stop it from running on as we saw today, it a big issue to start building up muscle on muscle in the next 4-5 weeks.

Its A Dundeel beat Atlantic Jewel because its blood count was 100% spot on and that allowed the horse to go head to head with her over the last 300 metres. Still needs to improve his strength factors but on 97% and small in stature was a great run.

Sea Moon on 97% has a good blood count on 95%, but fitness, strength and hypertrophic fitness levels needs improving.

Silent Achieve on strong 98% failed to finish off in this good company, but an easier race is not too far away for it.

Dear Demi on just 96% fit was a surprisingly good run because of it strong strength factors, but they need to work on her blood count and fitness to improve. A hard horse to beat when things go her way and she can only improve more.

Melbourne Cup favourite Puissance De Lune on paper you may be disappointed on the run on 98% fit, but do not panic as it was not his race today. Is in excellent fitness levels and all they need to do now is make sure his blood count is 100% compared to 85% today. Has great strength and hypertrophic fitness levels on 90%. Still big show in the Melbourne Cup.

Best runs were Puissance Del Lune and Green Moon.

Atlantic Jewel needs 100% blood count to fire up or they may spell her if she does not recover well from that run.

Green Moon, on 97%

Nowhere near that high imo.

I think almost every one of Lloyds horses I've seen over the past month have been BIG, in some cases REEEEEALLY BIG

with the exception of possibly Mourayan and Sea Moon. Obv still Improvement in both of those but some have looked in foal.

Fitness Margins vs Science

When a horse is 100% fit it can run nearly 50kph over a short distance to win a race.

Why would you want to back a horse that can only run 35kph?

My fitness formula took from 1987 – 2012 to complete and is based on 1% = 1 length in advantage a horse has over another, so a horse 10% less fit i.e.: 90% can be beaten by 10 lengths by a 100% fit horse.

What tests are there to prove your formula?

Scientific test proved that a car travelling at 45kph (10% slower) behind a car travelling at 50kph
will finish 25 meters behind the faster car over a short distance, the same as horses at full speed.

The length of a horse is universally accepted at 2.4 meters, so x 10 lengths = 24 meters.

So my formula is scientifically proven and correct, and it only took me 25 years and over 50 years in racing and many millions of ratings, simple.

Punters ask yourself; "Why would you want to back a horse unfit to run only 35kph when you can back a horse fit to win running at 50kph?"

There is no guess work in what I do.

Atlantic Jewel on only 97% fit still has 3 lengths of improvement left, but it's lower blood
count is prevented it from match It's A Dundeel over the last 50 metres.

Basica Atlantic Jewel ran out of oxygen in its muscles at the finish where as It's A Dundeel
on a higher blood count rating just had enough to pip her on the line.

Black Caviar in her 25 starts rarely raced on low 97% fit and was always always fitter.

You're forgetting Thebas that he obviously has access to kavanagh's private computer or the lab that conducted the blood tests private computer.
You can't compete with that sort of 'inside' info, a  former dog trainer that says it all. When you fail at everything else in life you either become a steward first and a dog trainer second, sound like he's even failed at that.
I was clearly being far too generous when I called him a mere snake oil salesman, he's rocketed to a rung below pond scum with a bullet.

it's a fascinating concept ... i can visualise Jim with a smile on his dial always

and i think it ... WOULD ... take 50 years to precisely identify a 1% variation in a horses musculature ... and then identify a blood count value ...

all with a horse bouncing around pre race ... or walking towards you or away from or whatever the tv stations angle is at any point in time ... combined with some being in sunshine and some being in shadows ... etc etc etc

but if anyone can do it ... i reckon Jim is the one to provide us all those answers  Wink Laugh Love Blush Confused
