Tony Abbott has released policy in terms of appropriate action on climate change. Its sensible, its real action and its not a great big tax on everything. Meanwhile the comrades (including Julia) run around trying to patch something together to release before the election........turn it up Wombleoz........try again pal. The Coalition have actually demonstrated REAL policy on climate change. Labor are behind the eight ball. You can rabbit on as much as you like. Its just all spin and excuses and you know it!  |

What a disgraceful comment from Abbott, to say that if implemented the East Timor processing would be a vacation for the refugees, on their way to Australia. Does he really think these poor people and their terrified children are on holliday. What a despicable human being this man must be, to continually try and score political points off the weak and displaced, who have very little voice. How low is this man going to sink in his attempt to enhance his appeal and grab power in this country.

What makes it worse is that you get the feeling that he actually believes his own rhetoric, that these people are ogres..... and are coming here to steal our jobs, and our houses and that we should all be very afraid to let people who come here by boat into our country. But he knows that he is relativley safe in demonizing the refugees because they have little or no voice and can't defend them selves....what a gutless weak excuse for a leader of a political party he is.

East Timor's deputy prime minister, Jose Luis Guterres, says his country is "very unlikely" to accept the idea, which Ms Gillard announced at a press conference earlier this week. Ms Gillard says she is yet to speak to East Timor's prime minister, Xanana Gusmao, who will have the final say on the decision. The issue is expected to be top of the agenda when Mr Gusmao meets with president Jose Ramos-Horta in Dili today. Arsenio Bano, the vice-president of East Timor's main opposition party Fretilin, says the proposal was badly timed. "I think Timor should reject the proposal, simply because there is no condition in Timor to do that," he said. "In economic and social conditions - we are one of the poorest countries in Indonesia." But Mr Bano says opposition to the idea is not just about money and whether or not Australia would assist with the centre. "I don't think that's a problem with assisting. I think the question is whether Timor wants to be a processing centre or other type of Pacific Solution," he said. "I don't think it is appropriate for Timor." Aderito Hugo da Costa, an MP and member of Mr Gusmao's party, agrees. "Money is not the point, not the issue," he said. "The issue is how we have time to look at an outside problem rather than look at our own peoples' problems which are still very, very serious." Igniting tensions Mr Bano says there are also worries that a processing centre for asylum seekers could inflame social tensions in East Timor. "If we want to decide to accept any refugees in Timor we have to be able to offer the same level of services that we offer to our own people so you avoid discrimination [and] other problems [like] racism and so on," he said. Ms Gillard discussed her proposal with Dr Ramos-Horta but she has not spoken with Mr Gusmao. Jose Belo, the editor of the east Timorese newspaper Tempo Semanal, says that was a mistake. "They thought that the president was the one that was going to make the decision, it's wrong, it's actually the executive right of the Government," he said. Ms Gillard says she will speak with Mr Gusmao in coming days. But he is likely to prove a tough audience. In recent months he has expressed discontent with Australia on a number of fronts and his push to have gas from the Timor Sea piped to East Timor to be processed onshore has been frustrated. Australian company Woodside has opted for a platform floating at sea. Foreign Affairs Minister Stephen Smith has defended the Government's consultation process. "President Ramos-Horta is more than just a head of state, that's quite clear from the way in which he operates and the way in which he works closely in conjunction with Prime Minister Gusmao," he said. "There's nothing inappropriate with Prime Minister Gillard having that conversation with the president." But Opposition Leader Tony Abbott says Ms Gillard failed to consult the right people about her offshore processing policy. "I don't know that she consulted with Stephen Smith ... before she made her announcement about a refugee processing centre in East Timor," he said. "Stephen Smith would have been able to tell her you've got to talk to the government, not to the president." Federal Opposition immigration spokesman Scott Morrison says the fact that Ms Gillard has not yet spoken to Mr Gusmao shows the Government is not serious. "This policy is not even half-baked, it hasn't even been put in the oven," he said. Asylum boat stopped The Opposition has also accused the Government of deliberately suppressing the release of information about the arrival of another boat carrying asylum seekers. Australian authorities intercepted the boat late on Tuesday but the information was not publicly released until last night. In a statement, Home Affairs Minister Brendan O'Connor says the Government releases information in a timely way once the facts have been checked. Mr Morrison has accused the Government of withholding the information to allow the Prime Minister to promote her "East Timor solution". He says it has "exposed her political motives and her political agenda writ large". "Here we have a Prime Minister who said that she wanted debate based on the facts, and then has suppressed those facts to suit her own political and media timetable," he said. "This is the sort of political spin and manipulation that would put even Kevin Rudd to shame." Fascinating discussion here gents. Firstly, it's just been announced that our unemployment figure fell to 5.1%. So on that basis alone, Abbot has a problem convincing the public that his economic policies are going to be better than Labours.
Secondly, the Reserve Bank kept interest rates on hold and will do so, probably till after the next election, which takes the wind out of that argument. So where can he attack Labour. He can do so on the insulation batts fiasco. But very few people are talking about that anymore, and even the Newspapers aren't reporting on it. He can have a go at the Building the education revolution about which the Australian has a story about wastage nearly every day, but I can't really see that it's having a major effect on voter sentiment. The vast majority of school principals, won't complain, because they are happy to get a much needed classroom or school hall or library built. So he's left with the refugee problem. The fact is, that aside from the Aborigines, we are all migrants/refugees. Whether we were brought out in chains, or came here to escape persecution or terrible economic conditions in other countries. He is taking a tough stand on the refugees. Gillard, says she is doing a deal with East Timor and New Zealand, which it turns out hasn't been done yet and may never be done. But her line is that it's going to take negotiation and time. She has taken some of, but not all of, the heat out of the debate. Abbot will appeal to the fear factor in an attempt to try and convince people that we could be over-run by illegals. It will have some effect, but not enough to win him the election. In my opinion, Labour will be returned but with a reduced majority. If, and I don't think it will happen, the election is close, then Labour will win on Green preferences. The last person anyone voting Green wants in power, is Tony Abbot. All will be answered by the end of August. |

Unfortunately you are totally right laythefave. Gillard looks a certainty in an Aug election as Abbott doesnt have a great deal to work with at present. It won't be for another year or two before we all realise how worse off we are with Labour.
Last election i made a heap backing Maxine McKew to beat Howard so i'll be looking closely at each electorate as they will still be some upsets in certain seats. Eg perhaps Bennelong might go back to Libs. |

LTF: On the money with this one , but certainly reduced majority.Julia on Lateline last night was rattled when Interviewer discussed East Timor policy with her.Being found out for the first time had her off stride and made to look clearly not answering to the truth of things.Hockey has been quiet and mining tax figures are extremely rubbery- watch for him to be their "Gunner"on this as it will seriously blow the Budget apart.They have been smashed by the Miner's campaign and their is serious doubt about their resolve in the community.
MrBen: Economically you are correct and certainly evidence is stacking up.Scrolling across a few Economic websites , I came across a Socialist website ,read a a few articles that attacked the Labour Gov't, from a position of the workers getting screwed with taxes, so I will say to you it's a grey area at times. Furthermore , It was the Liberals and Howard and that old chestnut Reith during the GST and Waterfront debacles that ran with the line we as a nation have living standards that are too high as reasoning for these campaigns and also ran that line for dismissal of penalty rates and work choices.Had they of said we need these policies to develop buisness and entreprenuership( which is what it is ) for the betterment of the country than so be it.Poorly argued with soundbite advertising is the issue. OK, I found it, very poor use of words by Abbott, saying 'vacation', in the context of what he was saying it is obvious he means a 'stopover' because the stay in East Timor would be a temporary stop on their way to Australia.
I think he also has that wrong, because Gillard is really wanting to seek something closer to the previous 'Pacific Solution'. |

When people have a strong view about any subject there is a tendancy to see 'confirmation bias' in their behaviour. This term is mostly used for data collection, but I guess when one reads information they are processing data, if not collecting it.

you know aussie P your right it is the workers who are being screwed.Actually I begin to feel sorry for the bloke with a mortgage and kids.He has to get up and go to work each day to fund his own life and the lives of the non contributors.Its him who has no defence.The rich can find ways to avoid it, he cannot.yet the delusion that labor is "for the workers" is still believed.The "workers" will be crushed under the burden of living costs and taxes, working more and more hours to make ends meet.Its already happening.
All the while clinging to the deluded belief that socialism will protect them.The workers are being told that compulsory super will protect them, mmmmmm that has'nt worked out too well so far has it.The all ors is the same now as it was 5 years ago.The workers are powerless. |

I'm going on record here and now that if gilliard wins the next election mortgage rates are going to at least 10%.The over spending, the flood of immigrants, the lack of economic management and controls makes it certain.Inflation is tipped to be officially 4% [ we all know its a lot higher than that].That will make the reserve bank lifts rates.at some point the combination of govt taxes charges and living cost will become intolerable and the workers will demand wage increases.Hence that is inflationary, hence interest rates will rise big time. |

Well I was wrong, no election called this weekend - still a few lose ends to tie up - back to my original 28 August date. Way to soon to say what will happen to the economy here the next 12 months, if the US and Europe double dip it will be hard for us not to follow, that would lead to lower interest rates rather than higher. Either way we're on a great base with 5.1% unemployment - there is no way the government deserves to be booted when it can deliver a figure like that when it could have been MUCH worse |
