Great contribution laythefave. Though I can't help but suggest your leaning towards Labor this election.
But I disagree on a few points. [;)] Whats he supposed to do, (Mr Abbott)?, give her a big hug and say "We love you Julia, but I reakon Australian's should vote Liberal". It won't be a negative campaign, but an awareness campaign. Gillard is an extreme left wing union fanatic, surely Australians are not keen on going down that road? It looks good now - but if she gets in for 3 years?? ![]() I appreciate the position the government are in. They're all high-fiving because they feel theyre in a good place. Gillard is promising to fix all the errors of Rudd, and the electorate are taking it like a spoon of honey. Lots of talk and spin, delivered with perfection by Ms Gillard. We have an election campaign to come. Plenty of other issues besides the great big labor mining tax to be covered. A tough fight ahead, but not unwinnable for the Coalition. Oppositions don't win elections, government's lose them - and this Rudd-Gillard administration has demonstrated a great, great deal of incompetence to deserve the big boot. |
By:
Jez, while I agree that the Labour party deserve to get the boot, I don't see a great deal of difference between the two parties. I am therefore leaning towards voting Labour on this occasion and if Gillard stuffs up in their second term, then I will vote against them next time.
Gillard wasn't just a left wing fanatic, she was a Communist. Over the years, however, her views have moderated considerably and she is now just to the left of centre. As P.M. you can expect her views to moderate even more. Of course I expect Abbot to come out swinging. But unless he can come up with some spectacular policies that blow the Government out of the water, he has got no chance of winning. The general public just don't like the bloke, and even when Rudd was at his lowest, he was still the preferred P.M. albeit by an ever decreasing margin, over Abbot. That margin has now increased markedly between Gillard and Abbot. |
By:
I think the Building the Education Revolution shambles will haunt Ms Gillard during the campaign.
She cannot escape responsbility............... I think Tony Abbott makes a reasonable point in that the honeymoon will end once the campaign begins, and the memories come flowing back - failures, bungles, backflips & broken promises. The polls will tighten up. Marginal seats are showing a few point difference in Preferred PM between Gillard & Abbott. In addition to this, Liberal party polling is indicating some deep lingering concerns about this Rudd-now-Gillard Labor government. Plenty of undecided voters to be snapped up during the campaign proper. But I accept it takes a lot I think everybody would agree, these two contenders (Gillard & Abbott) present a mouthwatering political feast in terms of an election campaign. Both clever and savvy politicians - niether imo can be under estimated. |
By:
Bah. Sorry, can't type to save my life.
*But I accept it takes a lot to beat a first termer. |
By:
Jez, the Greens preferences will get her over the line. Mind you, how anyone in their right mind can vote for those green nut cases, is beyond me.
By:
The thorn in the Liberal-National Party's side.
Greens preferences. A vote for the Greens, is a vote for Labor. Though I believe the flow-on will be 20-30% lower than last election. Current polling in favor of Labor is exacerbated by the 2007-based preferences flow. |
By:
Do the Labour Government that you work for, know you are a Lib supporter??? I'd watch my back if I was you!!! lol.
By:
I'm not formally a public servant
![]() I certainly don't work for the current Commonwealth Government. Couldn't handle it. |
By:
Mmmm. Now I'm worried. I posted on the Economy thread that I was paying your wages. But you don't work for the Commonwealth Government. But you are a public servant. So I DO pay your wages. Heck I'm good to you, Jez. I pay your salary, and give you time off from your job to not only post on this and another thought provoking thread, but to start the Monday tipping thread. Now that's what I call multi-tasking. lol.
By:
Bloody contractors - should leave the work to us real public servants [;)]
laythefav I agreed with a lot of your first post but you lost me when you bagged us Green voters, at least they stick by what they believe in and are the only genuine left of centre party still going. I have no idea why you think Green voters will preference Abbott though Jez??? He is probably further right than Howard, if Turnbull or Costello was running the show maybe, but not with Abbott |
By:
Sorry Womble, but the greens are way too out there for me. If they ever achieved power, and implemented their policies, we'd have to go back to living in caves and eating alfalfa shoots.lol.
By:
Anyone listening to Gillard's dribble on asylum policy. She is more talk & spin that Rudd with even some name dropping thrown in.
Bottom line is their policy has no substance & won't stop boats arriving at all. |
By:
I'm not a contractor wombleoz. Stuff that, no job security.
Wombleoz - you seem to have some intelligence...... Go to the Green's website and dig deep into their policy agenda. .....when I start flicking thru their policy material, I find myself sweating...profusely Its scary, unrealistic, fanciful rot - they are a real worry - we would all be in big big big trouble and our way of life would be threatened in an extroidinary way if the Greens ever achieved dominant power. They serve one purpose the Green's - as Labor's preference machine. |
By:
Your spot on Kye.
In 2007 Mr Rudd declared "I will turn back the boats" and the headlines screamed "Labor gets tough of asylum seekers" This media frenzy surrounding Ms Gillard's working thru her list of "things to do" before the election is a joke, and today's tough talk, is just that. Gillard is simply a red-headed Kevin Rudd. All talk, no action and highly spun. Labor cannot be trusted on border security. I am sick and bloody tired of getting up every morning going to work and paying a fair chunk of taxes week in week out and I'm paying for our Australian Navy to act as a greeting party for these people aboard boats who have jumped the queue (compared to those who have waited 10+ years in camps). Fair dinkum. This must stop. Enough is enough. There are processes in place for a damn reason. We must send a strong message to the people smugglers - we cannot allow ourselves to remain a soft target. I am all for the fair go and I am most certainly not a red-neck or racist - but charity starts at home. What about the people on the streets across the country tonight, who don't have a home to go! Why aren't the Greenies and do-gooders rabbiting on about their plight? Meanwhile these groups of Afghani's and Sri Lankans are living in 5 star hotels? I think we have our priorites VERY wrong. We do our fair bloody share - ausaid, immigration, and we accept large numbers of refugees. |
By:
Greens policies don't scare me all that much Jez and laythefav because I know they are very unlikely to ever be implemented in full, their more moderate stuff usually makes sense though - e.g. the very fast train stuff is just common sense
As is their stand on boat people, the numbers are tiny - RELAX, Labor is dumb for wanting to spend hundreds of millions to stop a few people getting here, cost per head surely makes it a pointless exercise and all done because of scare campaigns on the issue - dumb dumb dumb |
By:
Its not a scare campaign. And its not dumb dumb dumb.
The public are just sick and bloody tired of this issue. What about the homeless people across the country? That froze in last nights temperatures? Why aren't you waging a massive campaign on them? with your Greenies? No of course not. Instead your carrying on about a bunch of people being encouraged by our tough laws (FACT) to come into Australian waters and from there its a free ride - food, healthcare, clothing, welfare, housing, etc. As well as the current five star accommodation they're staying in. The numbers must be tiny if we're struggling to find room for them. Enough is enough. What about the people waiting in refugee camps, you know BY THE RULES? This is a law-breaking exercise. We continue along these lines you watch the stream of boats pile up. Its not rocket science. Every asylum seeker means one less by the book refugee, stuck waiting in a refugee camp. Why have laws if we aren't going to abide by them. Sick to death of paying millions apon millions of dollars on this issue - we should not be a soft target - we must have thorough border protection. Try and squash the issue with your small little words Wombleoz. But Australian's want action - your head in the sand, or not. I feel all we are getting from the PM on this one, and is more tough words and spin. |
By:
LMAO. I need to go back to keyboarding class.
**encouraged by our soft laws (FACT) |
By:
Abbott's answer won't be free either Jez and it won't stop the boats - simple question for you though Jez - what would you do if you were in the boat person's shoes??? I know I'd do everything I could to get away to somewhere safe.
The only difference between East Timor and Nauru is that that East Timor is a signatory to the UN Convention. We have already built a centre on Nauru for a fortune though so we might as well just use it IF we go down this path. I don't think we should Agree 100% re the homeless problem here, more needs to be done - being less concerned about a few boat people would free up money to spend on the homeless. It's a tiny problem and should be treated that way |
By:
Womble, the Liberals during Howard Gov't did stop the boats. Rudd created a new problem that Howard had resolved. The last few years of Liberal Gov't there was next to no boats & now there is almost one a day.
As such i'd back Abbott to fix the problem before Gillard as the Labour Gov't is only interested in taking the high moral ground on this issue. |
By:
Agree Kye: Ruthless but effective.Stopped the boats and re-settled the refugees at the same time.In that light- correct public policy
By:
Howard did not stop the boats, they still came. The number of refugee's seeking refuge from danger and opression is governed by the stability of countries in our region. Howard did not have to contend with the level of recent trouble in Sri Lanka and other countries.
By:
And to be fair, some are only put in 4 star hotels and the 5 star ones are looking a bit dated and need some improvements in decor and the like to be brought up to 5 star standard.
By:
AFL, you are right there was no issues in Asia during Howard. perhaps you can blame the GFC as well. Get real! There are no excuses for poor policy. Check this graph out

How many boats is acceptable?
By:
1 every 10 weeks is acceptable according to the Libs because thats how many came during their time in office.
But they keep saying the LIE that they stopped the boats |
By:
AFL, they did stop the boats. Please check the facts. There was nowhere near 1 every 10 weeks in the last two years of Howard Gov't. he had fixed the problem.
By:
So 1 in 10 weeks is acceptable over the course of their whole term.....as long as they don't all come at once......ohhh i see now.
By:
Howard's policy resolved the problem. The fact that there were more boats earlier in their Gov't just supports that a tough stance was needed & worked. Rudd then relaxed the policy & boats started arriving again.
I dont know how to explain it any simplier than that. |
By:
To continually say they stopped the boats is a BLATANT LIE that reaks of the desperation the LIBS will stoop... to score a political point off the plight of the refugees. The number of refugee's seeking refuge from danger and opression, by boat, is governed by the stability of countries in our region.
We settled a few hundred thousand Vietnamese, that came by boat. The sky did not fall in....we were not invaded.. |
By:
To suggest that the Howard government did not have as much to contend with, in terms of countries with issues.....as for the reasons for the boats not coming.....a massive furfie.
You forgotten about the beginning of the War on Terror in Afganhistan and our battles in Iraq? Your a joke AFL. A comedy show. Read up on some facts pal. Your reading straight from the Labor propaganda book, which in doubt, just lie, use tricks and make excuses. The only side of politics that has competently demonstrated it is willing to follow-through on effective and firm (but fair) border protection is the Coalition. To turn the boats around, we need a change of government. The Rudd-Gillard Government has been all talk and hot air on this issue - and the President of East Timor has confirmed this, following the release of the Prime Ministers "East Timor Solution" yesterday - the President has come out and said, WTF? Whats all this about? Who said we would do this? ![]() ![]() A half-baked attempt at rehatching the Coalition's "Pacific Solution". But are Labor fair dinkum? NO! Do we believe there will be real action after the election when this deal is due to be sealed? NO! Remember in 2007, Labor screamed......"We'll stop the boats" ![]() ![]() Amatuer hour from the Rudd-Gillard Labor government. It is business as usual for this spinfest Labor outfit. Sussex Street has truly implanted itself on Capital Hill in Canberra. Same horse, different jockey. Remember the promise in 07 - new leadership, fresh ideas? ![]() Seen the record over the past 2 and half years? Time to change the government. |
By:
LMAO AFL.
You can't even imitate tough talk like your comrade, Julia. Your all spin, lies and excuses. Truly pathetic. This is what Labor supporters/members have been reduced too. I thought this Labor government said in 2007 that the: The buck would stop with them & No more blame game! Your mob is in power and cannot take responsibility for its failures. From one issue to another, its shambolic. Truly, the most overhyped political outfit in Australian history. When this Titanic sinks it will be spectacular. The iceberg has been struck (Rudd's demise)..... its now just a matter of time |
By:
Did they stop the boats??
By:
AFL, i sent you a link. Do you just not believe the facts?
By:
If someone says they stopped the boats.....it means zero....zilch..no boats entered our waters once the boats were stopped. Otherwise labor could say they stopped the boats now....as no more boats have entered our waters since the last boat.
By:
Did they stop the boats??
None of you Libs want to answer that question.....as you know the answer is ...NO. So why do the Libs keep telling this lie??? ELECTION. |
By:
Ok it wasn't zero but it was next to nothing & certainly not a problem.
In the last six years of the Coalition Government, there was an average of just three boats and fifty people per year. Only one boat arrived in 07/08. In 2009/10 104 boats arrived illegally, carrying 4,893 people. As i have already stated Labour created a problem which the Liberals had resolved. They are the simpple facts. |
By:
At least 5 boats a year over the full term of the Libs. Fact. They did not stop the boats, nor will any Govt. as long as there is political instability and unrest in our region....Fact.
Kye Joined: 17 Nov 04 Replies: 3451 07 Jul 10 12:30 In 2009/10 104 boats arrived illegally, carrying 4,893 people. This figure is mostly a direct result of the Sri Lankan unrest, that was not present during the Libs term. Well just under 5000 people in 2 years....on your figures,......WOW, we should really be fearful ....we are being invaded by people who have fled their HOME COUNTRY in desperation....for their own lives and their families lives ...and all you people are worried about is that..... its not a good look....and how it may affect you .... Have any of you ever spoken to someone who has fled their own home country for fear of being oppressed or killed, and more often than not, after members of their own family are either missing or killed.....and we sit back here and all that is driving the debate is which party lets the least amount of boats in. Draw your own conclusions....imo. |
By:
If only these desperado's fleeing their home country would do it in an orderly fashion....and follow the sign posts to their nearest detention center.

By:
Kye, have you got a source other than the Liberal party website LOL
Yes Howard "stopped the boats" but to do so he had to implement a policy that even members of his own party couldn't bring themselves to support and crossed the floor to vote against. The big differences at the moment are of course the GFC which means a lot a of countries are less attractive than they were + the civil war in Sri Lanka has ended and people are possibly rightly scared of retribution for after years of fighting. Gillard weak on climate change with her latest announcement - but at least she doesn't think it's c r a p like Abbott. Election will be called this weekend, very interesting times ahead - Vote 1 - Australian Sex Party, Vote 2 - Green - Vote 3 Labor I'll be away for a few days - have fun without me, fight the good fight AFL ![]() |

Memo to Wombleoz from Kevin Rudd ---I want my handbook of tricks and excuses returned. ------------------------------------------------------- Lets go through your spin, point by point Wombleoz. - Firstly, in relation to party members crossing the floor? At least they can and are able to exercise that right. Your telling me no one in the Labor Party are disgruntled about this policy from Gillard? LMAO. Get real. You cross the floor in the Labor Party and your membership is automatically terminated. - Secondly, I haven't heard the "GFC caused it" excuse used for the boat people coming into our waters, left, right and centre. Sounds like another Labor excuse. Fact is, this Labor government softened our border protection - leading to increased business for people smugglers. - Thirdly, you want to start scrolling back through the tapes of what Ms Gillard has said previously? Wait for the campaign to start and you shall see. Another excuse Wombleoz. No policy, no action - all excuses, eg Tony Abbott has released policy for rela |
