BUT. All excuses & spin. No real outcomes have been achieved here. Australian's are worse off than they were in 2007 - bottom line. Rudd-Gillard Government has been a comprehensive failure. It's now a case of same horse, different jockey. |

It scary when you speak to fondly of social policy.
We already have a worrying culture of entitlement in this country when it comes to existing social policy. Do you/have you worked in the social policy (delivery) sector Wombleoz? If not, it may be something to think about, MAY give you a different perspective. I have. I am all for strong NECESSARY social policy - the Howard Govt was the best friend of Medicare. I'll let Margaret Thatcher say a few words here (her words still ring true, today): "I think we have gone through a period when too many children and people have been given to understand "I have a problem, it is the Government's job to cope with it!" or "I have a problem, I will go and get a grant to cope with it!" "I am homeless, the Government must house me!" and so they are casting their problems on society and who is society? There is no such thing! There are individual men and women and there are families and no government can do anything except through people and people look to themselves first. It is our duty to look after ourselves and then also to help look after our neighbour and life is a reciprocal business and people have got the entitlements too much in mind without the obligations..." |

I have to a degree Jez, and would like an opportunity to do more of it - one of the reasons we are the country we are is due to the safety net we have in place, I hate to see it abused but even more I hate to see misdirected and wasted. Very much so - at the moment we have hundreds of asylum seekers living in 4-5 star hotels across the nation.

I've even heard the most left-wing of my colleagues in the past say: "You can't help someone, unless they help themselves, we do too much" I support (as do the Coalition) a safety net. But there is a firm line in the sand. We cannot allow this entitlement mentality. I am totally against the thinking that "government knows best" & "big government". The greatest opportunity a government can provide, is the opportunity of employment. Back to the current government..... Now we're in heavy debt due to the Rudd-Gillard Government spend-a-thon guised under the GFC - where will all the cash come from? We're in real strife if Julia has her way with the public purse - and you know who will suffer the most wombleoz? The very people you say you & the comrades strife to help the most!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

I prefer the Howard style of dealing with boat people.Look really tough preventing a few thousand boat people in through the back door while welcoming 250000 asians a year through the front.

DA - I agree with you. I think the Howard Government had a strong stance on boat people, yet the immigration policy wasn't as rigid as it could of been. I reject & scorn racism, but believe we need to be conservative in our approach to immigration.
"We will decide who comes to this country & the circumstances in which they come". I welcome the comments from the Prime Minister today in rejecting Fmr Prime Minister Rudd's proposal for a BIG Australia - though I hope it is substance not spin - which is most likely. |

Where do those of you that liked Howard's approach to boat people think all those that were Nauru are now??? And at what cost??? Overall though, it's an insignificant problem - more people come in through the front door and overstay by many times over. The debt issue is overstated and will be gone in a few years, if we had gone into recession we would've been MUCH worse off. |

Irregardless of what position, their is one thing I know : 80% of Australia is uninhabitable so population policy has to be driven from environmental sustainability viewpoint.I mean FFS they haven't (Labour) the political will to tell (NSW) to let the water flow to the Murray to try to replenish it. Abbott is on record as priority to do this.
Secondly, regulation is needed (sensible) as the far right free market mob , you end up with greed,Wall street bankers,GFC , etc, the big end of town screwing the rest of us. |

Not sure I agree with the 80% figure (people live in deserts all over the world) AP but I do agree growth needs to be sustainable. As seems does Julia and the Greens - biggest driver for the 36 million number is business. Don't get me wrong though, we need more people - the tax base needs to grow and if we don't all want to pay more tax we need more people paying it as well as to do the essential jobs there'll be no one to do without more people to do them.

The Rudd-Gillard Government was embracing a big Australia about 2 months ago. Now another backflip - and Ms Gillard wants to embrace sustainable growth - do we trust her? Not on your life. We need to find a balance. Capitalism, hardcore, can fail & fail spectacularily.
But if we would like to head down the road of being broke,in poverty, terrorism and the like - choose Socialism. Not only do I not trust Ms Gillard and Labor, based on there first term record; But as has been demonstrated by previous Labor administrations, they cannot find balance. And with Ms Gillards long held beliefs (Union fanatasism & strong Socialist values)......we're all in a whole heap of trouble if she has her way. |

premier pete up here in 05 'no one will pay more for power' and words like more comp the cheaper it will get.....ffs annas gunna let them charge to cover and wait for this "the cost of telemarketing" amongst other things wtf? also the cost of infrastructure , so its like this we all pay to build this infrastructure so they can in turn charge us more...great concept that....most business i know borrow for infrastructure and pay it off....in most cases early days running at loss...ask how optus went the first 5 or so years here..all loss in setting up.....not these guys, you pay for it so we can charge you for it.....i did vote labour in state and fed last time...this time NO WAY |

was no fan of gst at the time and was furious with johnny and pete but in all honesty they had the country flying enough for labor to spend it and then some. the gst is a good thing imo, we have to pay taxes its a fact of life, ask the greeks how they are going with all their tax dodging? they key is the level and fairness of tax....the gst seems pretty fair...... one thing though the greedy state labor govts all refused to stop all their stamp duties and such but didnt...greedy bar stewards dont worry i'm a swinging voter afl but it all seems a bit ordinary for labor at the moment |

If a job becomes available and you want to apply for it, and want a serious chance of getting it....you don't go into the interview hanging sh it on the person who holds the job and wants to keep it. You wont get it if all you can say to the employer is ...Don't you worry about me....i'll be better than the bloke who's got the job now....without offering a vision...and a reason for them to employ you beyond I'll be better than the last bloke....HTH |

Haven't heard a question asked of Abbott about his policies since their lamentable Budget reply speech where they played pass the parcel in regards to actually giving the speech,...... and then had the gall to claim savings in their budget of the cost of the resources tax....when they are going to dump it if voted in.....if that is the kind of tricky accounting they are going to use when in power.....it proves what a joke of an opposition they are, and don't deserve to be in power for treating the people with such contempt.[:(][:(]

Anyone with SOME political nouse would realise both sides when in Opposition need only release their plan for the future and an alternative government, once an election is announced. Nothing unusual. Abbott escaping scrutiny? Desperate speak. Get real. The scrutiny at this time needs truly to be directed towards the ELECTED GOVERNMENT of the day, that being the Rudd-Gillard Government and its record over its first term in power. And what a list of achievements to date. This is what the Coalition will be focusing on in this campaign - the record, the backflips, the failures, the debt & the litany of broken promises - this they cannot escape. They came to power promising to ease the stress of Australian families - massive FAIL. They came to power promising prompt action on climate change - FAIL. They came to power promising to act as economic conservatives - FAIL. They came to power promising to end the blame game - FAIL. They came to power promising that the BUCK would STOP with the PM - FAIL. Australian's are renowned for voting with their hip-pocket in mind - polling still shows the Coalition hold a lead over Labor in terms of Better Economic Managers. Once the eurphoria & excitement subsides and the public look behind the new jockey on board this dead-beaten-flogged horse - once the campaign proper begins, expect polling to tighten - they will make a true decision on who they trust to take this country forward and they will be reminded of the Rudd-Gillard record. |

Gillard represents a fresh change for Labor .......42 Same horse different jockey....53 Uncommitted...........................5 A temporary rise in the Labor primary vote, but expect but to quickly dissolve once the campaign spotlight turns back to the Labor record. The Prime Minister is already starting to sound like a focus-grouped freak with her repeated one-liners. You can spin, but you can't escape Julia...the "Gang of Four" participation in this shambolic first term of Labor has not been forgotten. The public very quickly became sick & tired of the fresh image of Kristina Kenneally in NSW - because despite the change, the chronic failures continue. Not to mention the Sussex Street powerbrokers bringing their infamous executioner, filthy, stinking governing style to Capital Hill in Canberra. |
