I can tell you the Libs were genuinely surprised by the events of the past 24 hours. Rudd was a liability, and the Coalition looked good against him - but do not under estimate Tony Abbott and his ability.
I spoke to a Labor Party hack today and he said to me - this is a massive gamble - a mucky look today despite Gillards best attempts and the election is no easy win. The material going around ALP circles last night that helped move this motion to oust Rudd spells trouble for Labor in terms of the brand. Rudd was a liability, but the polling coming out is also signalling anti-Labor. Julia has her work cut out for her. Again, foolish to rely on the sisterhood vote. Many women dislike her & like I said, there is a decent anti-female PM vote as well. I disagree with it, but its there. Incredible times in Australian politics. |

I am still gobsmacked that a first term Prime Minister (even though he is Labor) has been torn down by the party after defeating a 12 year Coalition government.

Another pathetic performance from Honest Tony last night on the 7.30 report, when challenged to defend his own hypocrisy in his FAKE outrage (on ethical grounds) at Rudd's exit. I am sure he is outraged....but not for the reasons he says.[;)]
Also the Libs have their own faceless people working their computers and phones, and swamping every talk-back radio show in the country, and towing the company line. Just like the lady yesterday that was exposed by 3aw as a plant who is living in Queensland and as a Sole Trader...somehow found the time and the need to ring 3 aw in Melbourne...and almost in parott fashion espouse the same verbal garbage as Abbott that same morning. It is just a pity that she wasn't researched enough to know the compares name and to call him Bill or Gary or whatever name she used...instead of Neil. Oh dear....why dont they just give up...and come back to the people with some policies.....then they might stand a chance. imo |

I have to laugh Joel.
I am reminded of the similar comments made by people when Rudd was elected in 2007 - "he will be the best PM EVER". Instead him and his Gang of Four, including the now PM, Ms Gillard bought us, the Insulation debacle, the wasteful, botched education revolution, chronic Labor debt, soft border control & complete inaction on climate change - an incredble backflip. It is a case of same horse, different jockey. Once the "fresh leader" euphoria dies down, Australian's will reflect on what has been achieved by Labor to date in government. Besides the furfie, THAT IS, the claim to fame of saving us from the GFC - what has been achieved? - Mr Rudd in his final speech mentioned the tokens, the apology & the kyoto signing - but he also listed the many reviews, commissions and apparent policy/reform (eg. health) - that is no where near ready nor in action currently. We have witnessed the true intentions of Labor, its dirty, nasty & devious antics. It is business as usual for the factional warlords & union bosses that coordinate the party - this isn't about the future of Australia, it is about the future of Labor. Australians need ask themselves in the lead up to this election. Are we better off? No. Have the promises of this administration been delivered? No. Has Labor eased the pain of the rising cost of living or contained interest rates? No. This is a Labor Party that is all politics, no policy. They intent on a presidential campaign to hold on to power. Australian's are not foolish. Only Tony Abbott & the Coalition are committed to real action on the issues that matter most to Australians - not talk, spin & hyperbole - REAL ACTION. |

Mining tax, will be the kicker- if it's changed too much , budget is ripped apart and Hockey and Co will pounce. Screwed either way on that one. The poll samples were taken Thursday night. Ms Gillard had been PM for a mere 12 hours. They may as well have been taken by Union bosses. Of course you want a snap poll, because it avoids closer scrutiny of Gillards leadership, your record in government to date & takes advantage of the "confetti" effect of this leadership change.....not sure if your attempt at hoodwinking Australian's will actually pay off...I still expect a tight election contest. To be honest, in terms of the Coalition, since 2007, I have never seen them so unified, confident, stable & consistent. In Tony Abbott, we have a very astute, well spoken leader - no fool. The Coalition have been the model of consistency, of stability of leadership - when the electorate takes a step back from the euphoria and sees the real state of Labor, the lies, the knifing, the backstabbing, the real powerhouses emerging - union bosses & factional warlord and the self-serving leadership change - as Ms Gillard says, there will be no lying down from the Liberal-National Coalition - it is indeed "Game on". I find the collective sign of relief from Labor left-wing quite amusing. When the real tacticians of Labor care nothing for these 6-12 hour polls, but whether this massive gamble will pay off! When crunch time hits and the real issues that have failed all Australians under Labor come home to roost - will this knifing & Sussex style politics win the day? |

Enlighten us. Baring in mind, Australian's are worse off now, than in 2007, when this Labor shambles was elected. Is it to be more of the same under Labor Wombleoz? Or will it miraculously be different. Why should this rot be elected for a second term Wombleoz? Whats your answer? "Well all government deserve second terms" ???? You've all changed? Will there be more debt, more backflips, more failed projects, broken promises? What about higher costs for families - is that going to be addressed - or like this term, just ignored? AP Queenslanders are traditionally conservative but they are also smart enough to separate state and federal issues, making Swan deputy will help (i think Smith would've been a better choice) - Rudd, maybe after the election but not sure what ministry. Mining tax funds new things not existing ones, so any reduction reduces the new things associated with it
CB - "Asutralian's are worse off" - maybe a little but we did have the global financial crisis, there was always going to be some fallout. Interest rates are lower than at the last election, unemployment is 5.2% - the story is pretty good. Tony Abbott is a right wing nutter that is almost guaranteed to say something stupid during the campaign, he'll stuff up when the heat goes on. If it is uncovered and articulated properly, that is the waste on school buildings.No-one is saying it isn't a worthy Investment but it is a bit rich to have Gov'ts continually taxing more when they are paying 500,00 large for something that should cost 200,000 and everybody still getting a nice take. As M Latham was reported as saying " most Australians know the approx cost of building something per square metre". Someone or companies have gotten very rich out of it imo

Global financial crisis acted as a guise for Labor to turn to its spend-big tendencies - problem with Socialism (Julia take note) is you eventually run out of people's money to appropriate.
The Building the Education Revolution will cost us plenty for generations to come. Billions wasted. No accountability. Two main disappointments for me under Howard. Infrastructure - didn't quite go far enough - my issue with infrastructure under Labor, is, there is no accountability, no thorough planning whatsoever. It is blatent cash splashing. We haven't wasted an incomprehensible amount of taxpayers money under this federal Labor administration - all of which is finger pointed on the GFC, or now, Kevin Rudd. GST - Should of been 15-20% with a cutback on personal income tax - he didn't implement it thoroughly - though the Senate would most likely have rejected it, if it was presented in this form. I think Kevin Rudd as a Labor PM had an incredible opportunity to embrace tax reform with Henry Review. Following in the footsteps of Hawke & Keating - who indeed laid down some important reforms. |

This is a Labor government currently with no backbone, no conviction, and no meaning.
What does it stand for? It's pretty hard to find something! (Though I'm sure Wombleoz would have a good crack at it[;)] ) I think Gillard has a job on her hands. Her words are starting to sound very focus-grouped & awfully repetitive- after watching her on the Nine Network this morning. She is spot on about Rudd Labor losing its way - but it will be difficult for her to find direction, this government is broadly on the nose and Australian's don't know what it stands for. I think its foolish for Labor to take stock in Abbott making an error. There is just as much chance of Gillard making an error, as a newly sworn in PM (after knifing her boss) and about to go to an election. And clearly Labor strategists believed that this was not a possibility Rudd v Abbott, hence his disposal - so why would they think so now. Make no mistake, the novelty factor Australian's are caught up in will only last so long. Even if we go to an August election. |

A few facts about our Prime Minister, Ms Gillard -
The Communist Party of Australia reformed as the Socialist Forum in 1984. Julia Gillard became a member and signatory for them writing much of their extreme promotional literature. The Socialist Forum was designed to channel Communists into the Labor Party and was absorbed by the Fabian Society in 2002 and Ms Gillard was still a member of it. She never resigned. She presented a paper to the Fabian Society as late as 2007 called "How to be a Socialist Teacher". |

I'm not sure about your situation scoobeck, but Australian's broadly are worse off since Labor was elected 2007. Higher taxes, more taxes. Higher utility bills. Higher grocery bills. Huge national debt, putting massive pressure on interest rates. Unemployment higher than in 2007. just to name a few.............. I think the only people better off under Labor are the illegal immigrants. |

Equally, I am passionate about getting rid of bad governments. Governments that not only backflip on most of its election promises but BOTCHES each & every medial task it undertakes, whilst wasting breathtaking amounts of OUR money - without accountability. I care greatly about the future of this great nation, and I believe severe damage is being done under this Rudd-Gillard Government - and if the left wing socialist ideals of the Prime Minister are realised we are in DEEP DEEP trouble. Health - all but WA have signed up, progress being made NBN - starts in Tassie next month, Telstra now signed up (did Howard even know what broadband is? Wasn't mentioned in their 12 years in power) ETS - dumb policy, right idea - as Turnbull says, we won't get results without a price on carbon - would be if the Liberals didn't fold Fuelwatch - blocked by the senate grocerywatch - silly backdown after it was built and ready - big business stopped it RSPT - wring format - right idea Pink batts - generated plenty of jobs when they were needed If we looked at what everybody believed during university we'd see some VERY radical things lol. You should've been there Jez.Australia's best and brightest,obviously no right wingers,just educated and discerning people from all walks of life.Artists,performers,university lecturers,public servants,journalists,radicals,doctors wives,legal professionals,environmentalists,representatives of the gay community,aboriginal activists you name it.A broad cross section of society that truly understands what is best for working families.Yes it's true that Mr Rudd hasn't actually got around to implementing any of our fabulous ideas but he did have a lot on his plate.I'm sure Julia will get on to it straight away.
