Racing either side of the Festival has been pretty much bookmaker fodder, and it's no different tomorrow. Two premier meetings, but it's just a bunch of difficult handicaps on ground which is hard to predict. My guess would be on the soft side at both.
Despite being 0/11 the scores in the competition have been low so we still have a chance. Do we go for a couple of points, or try and win? I am going with the latter idea although to be fair I can see very few options. 4.25 Newbury Western George 25/1 EW Sometimes this can be a decent race, but this looks an ordinary renewal. This for me is the best pedigree on show, and the yard are capable of producing first time bumper winners. No worries on the jockey front as I much prefer McLernon to O'Neill. The only other two I have backed are the same stable's Rula Bula at Kelso, and at a much shorter price, Cardcounter at Navan. The latter is obviously the most likely winner, but we are talking a 3/1 shot, which isn't really good enough. |

Don't hold out much hope if the market is any guide. They have backed nearly everything in the bumper except mine so it looks like it is just making up the numbers.

Very well done to three who got us on the board.
Hopefully, this does better than the O'Neill bumper runner on Saturday. I still haven't worked out how they put it in first show at 25/1. Normally they are very conservative on a yard like that. Someone appeared to know - have Bet 365 got a mole in the yard? 5.17 Hereford Gower Spirit Ran in a listed bumper on debut, and attracted a bit of support, going off 20/1. A home bred, I thought she looked the part, and travelled nicely, but eventually she checked out quite tamely and finished a distant last. She is currently 10/1 in a much weaker race, and I hope the better ground and sharper track will be in her favour. It is interesting that she is pitched in against the geldings, and she gets weight from all bar the Weston runner. Only two places so I didn't think it was worth going each way. The trainer has had a couple of bumper winners since she returned to the ranks. I did think about waiting for the Lincoln, but my fancy has been backed, and looks too short now. Good luck all. |
|
By:
Thanks DD _ Nice write up and GL
Happy to take your fancy in the Lincoln as our wild card if you tink thats a good idea? |
|
By:
Having done it once I think it's only fair to share out the wild card. Hopefully, someone has got two strong fancies.
No market support for mine today which is a concern. Heading out towards the price it was on debut in that listed race. Fingers crossed it doesn't just stop again. |

Disappointing, even though she outran the market. She seemed to travel as well as the front two, and I thought it was strange that when she got left behind the jock did next to nothing to try and close the gap. I can only assume he was expecting her to stop to nothing again. In the end she just plugged on. The sharp track certainly didn't seem to help.

Morning all,
I have gone for Mick Applebys gelding as detailed above as an each way bet. Its a CD winner and runs off a decent mark. it ran a credible 3rd at Wolverhampton 3 weeks ago. it should be good enough to place if not win. |
