Just read this thread . I have to watch this on a Sat/Sun evening as my wife and kids are big fans....OK I guess I don't have to but in order to make it more bearable I like to place a bet on my idea of the winner.
In my opinion all these type of programmes ie X Factor, the Andrew Lloyd Webber stuff, etc are all edited to attempt to make the voting public choose "the chosen one" therefore the skill is working out who it is. IMO the poster nearest the truth is Nikki...Cowell chooses all 16 acts, some intentionally useless to make the others look better. His only concern is who will make him the most money....and I feel the most marketable out of all the acts is this boyband.Personally I think they are useless, however the way previous shows introduced all the members individually,(the part where the asian lad throws a paddy about being unable to dance springs to mind) and the throw away comments like "you guys were not good enough individually to get in the solo catorgeries" is all designed to make them more likeable. I agree that they will be a slow burner with a few power ballads sang bt the 2 strongest singers in the later shows. Good luck everyone with your bets and views.......my bet has been placed [smiley:crazy] |

good lad hemsby, you're a shrewdie

All aboard!!
Voters will love these, plus they have Cowell ramping them every show. When do we collect ![]() |

Singing Kelly Clarkson
Are we really meant to believe she was their musical hero? |
By:
Collectively yes [;)]

By:
Do we know all the song choices yet?

I agree with the central tenet of this thread - that One Direction will be pimped and hyped to the max by Simon and co. to get a winning band if at all possible.
There's no doubt at all that Harry and Liam were strong enough singers in their own right to make the solo categories; but that would have made it difficult to put through Matt (hence change to under 28s rather than 25s to avoid him being in Louis category!). Maybe I'm thinking too deeply on this one, but I agree with hemsby that you can often suss out the producers / Cowell's preference early on in the competition. They won't want them to peak too soon though, so expect One Direction to be slow burners in the first few weeks (just like McElderry). |

My Life Would Suck Without You by Kelly Clarkson
crap song, imo |
By:
That's definitely a dodgy choice... Typical one for Cowell though - I think Kelly is probably his hero rather than the boys!
By:
I can already see them singing with Justin Bieber in the final. That has to be the plan.

By:
One Erection and Mary (Hinge) could be the value to make final - was 25s with Spoils before tonight.
By:
Why does the market wait until they survive to back them?
Not in doubt this year IMO. |
By:
Someone smashing their price in this morning in the outright.
Could be a flip flop with Cardie at this rate ![]() |
By:
They'd be a stronger favourite than Cardie for me.
Are they as good as JLS? Yes for me. Do they have more voter appeal than JLS? Yes again Will Cowell ramp them like crazy? Yes again |
By:
fwiw i think the One D backers are suffering from lazyitis
yes they'll make the final but their appeal can only go so far. when it comes to the crunch, they'll get swamped by a Matt(see Will Young) or a Mary(see RATM/Subo/Michelle McManus)type vote. the inevitable "my daughter has voted 20 times"type/daily star vote leak threads will keep the price nice and low for the layers ..... which is nice ![]() |
By:
JLS didn't do badly aa and they had eggnog stealing much of their vote and Alex being ramped like crazy.
It would have been very different if they'd had no competition for their vote and Cowell ramping them. |
By:
Cowell ditched Eggnog (his act) to ramp JLS. 1D being his band doesn't mean they are assured any support.
By:
I agree with both of you there really fll and aa.
They are definitely stronger than JLS imo, but how much can their price be better come finals night. I missed the whole G4 thing, but no group has ever gone into the final as anything approcahing favourite since? |
By:
true but i had JLS picking up slightly older voters, trendier voters,r and b types
One D will miss that vote,as they will never be cool or hip imo. |
By:
yep true, aa, atm they probably only appeal to the teens, but it's still early days.
The thing that strikes me about them is that they just look the part. They might not be vocally perfect, but they look confident professional on stage, much as JLS did. AR he may not have been backing eggnog but he still polled 25%? of the final poll, most of which would have gone to JLS I suspect. |
By:
As Louis said the big test for them is when they do the big ballad. If they can do that then they'll win over plenty of the mums.
By:
True. They smashed Torn at the judges house, but they need to get the dude with curly hair to dominate the vocals, think Liam is limited. His Oasis song at Boot Camp was horrific.
By:
was the 7k bet layed??
By:
Cowell will likely ramp them far more than he ever did with JLS.
If a band like JLS can get second this lot can certainly gain enough votes to win - as every year goes by I think the younger vote gains more power in this competition too. More than perhaps with any of the winners of this show I think Cowell can see pound signs with this group - Mary or Matt might sell a few albums for a short period of time, but if he finds a successful boyband that are this young they could sell concerts and albums on a far bigger scale. Finding a new TakeThat or Boyzone is where some very big money lies. |
By:
no it wasnt
By:
stu..cowell can still have all that
but getting them over the line against a Matt or a Mary will be a real task. he couldn't even beat an old clapped out american beat combo for xmas no.1 ffs that is not Group 1 form mate [:p] |
By:
I understand Cowell may want these to win and I also understand they will have a strong voting demographic behind them but.....
They are carp and anyone who thinks they are better than JLS is either talking through their book or is deaf and blind. They will be there until right near the end, that seems a shoo in but I just cannot believe that even Cowell can get this tripe over the line. |
By:
HF - they are light years better than what Boyzone were when they were first put together on live TV!!...anyone remember the shambolic shuffling around and mumbling of that group of young lads...?
JLS were more professional for sure, but I think might have appealed less to some of the younger voters in comparison to this group. There is already a mass of personality and chemistry in this band, very reminiscent of a young TakeThat. |
By:
aa - perhaps a contest indeed, but if they work the usual magic with song choices, etc it's an easy boost for them. Not like they'll need a lot of help given the clamouring masses ready to call in for them. I'm sure there is also a fair amount of older voters who would prefer them to the oldies too - they all look like they need 'mums'

That sentence deserves a fiction writers award imho. Where on earth you have dreamt that up from I haven't a clue. |
By:
Without talking through my book (They're just a 'taker' for me, I lose about £25) I think they're not bad but twice now the Indian guy in the middle has been way off - they'd be better off without him. I think they'll go far with the young girls all voting them but when it comes to something like 10,000,000 votes coming in on finals night I think even if they do get there that someone will beat them. Imagine it were them against Leona, Alexandra. Joe in the final. Who would you vote?
By:
HF - have a look at their video diary on the x-factor page, they gell very well together (IMO) - this music business game is all about 'fiction' so I don't have a problem with that! Did we really believe that TakeThat were always just a bunch of cheeky chappies 24 hours a day? But it doesn't matter, it's the product that gets produced.

Lou - think that one is hammering home the ethnic/yorkshire vote. [;)]

Spot on HF. JLS were vocally alot better than this group, by a distance. It's easy to imagine Cowell wanting a group with this look winning if they sang really well, but going on the first 2 weeks, it's very hard to imagine him pushing this group to victory (a hard task in itself) with the vocals they've given. They could of course improve, but they're going to need to. Ferguson might not be popular on these forums but she's their go to girl imho and a massive price. Being over looked just like Alexandra Burke was at this stage for the likes of Austin Drage and Laura

Alex Burke wasn't wailing off-key quite so often though Angela...
By:
Yep, anyone who thinks Rebecca has put in decent vocal performances the last 2 weeks needs their ears tested.
She's wonderful at times, but flat as pancake at others. She also has zero stage presence. Anyway AR. I look forward to your post in a couple of weeks time saying that One Direction can't be beat and you're 50K green on them ;) |
