Yes The Monkees were America's answer to The Beatles and were known as 'The Prefab Four'

I think McCartney is a genius and by far the top man in the band but George only really did about 7 or 8 Beatles songs of renown.  Lennon wasn't bad though surely!  The best band ever by a country mile for me.

The Monkees too only had about 8 famous songs.

Monkees were a little bit bigger than Lou suggests, one of their albums is the 12th biggest selling album of all time.

all this talk about The Beates and the Monkees makes me more confident about One Direction winning the X Factor

It's only your opinion that While my guitar Gently Weeps is beeter than any Lennon song though.

How about 'This Boy' 'Girl'  'In My Life' for instance.  All considerd great songs as is While My Guitar yes.

Actually scrap that - think that 12th biggest was a dodgy source!

However, they did have 7 platinum albums, and 4 number one albums in a year - fair enough, they were fairly short lived in relative terms but I reckon they'd take their level of success (and money earning potential) for any band starting out right now!

Plus, should add in any potential (monkeesque) spinoffs marketing the bands in TV shows etc...

Oh yes they were big and recently I think did some comeback shows but I'm sure they only have about 8 really well known songs whereas The Beatles had about 1000 and 8!

I don't doubt the Beatles were a more credible act, but the amounnt of money the Monkees made just shows how credibility hasn't got much to do with it, when it comes to boybands. It's just about mass (young) appeal, downloads and concerts. Can't believe in fact that Cowell has never really managed to tap into that arena.

finally some drift.hopefully another poor showing
By:

When: 23 Oct 10 09:19
Poor showing at this point in the series wouldn't mean all that much alfie - possibly even means more likelihood for 'momentum' later.

It seems to me that no matter what happens to people's punts here it's good news.  If someone's shortens it's 'get on now the price is dropping fast Choo Choo' etc and if they drift it's 'possibly even means more likelihood for 'momentum' later' or 'all part of the journey'

You have to laugh!

Laugh yeh, suppose a lot of us are guilty of that sort of thinking.

I'm not sure why I bother sometimes though, not going to alter my bets on One D from here on anyway!

Yes I do.  Seems a bit quieter this year though.  I'm at home every day (mostly) so have the time but often there's barely anyone about.

I think that's spot on and very honest of you.  I try to be fair all round.  For instance Matt is the best winner for me but even though he's the favourite and if most people are honest looking as good as anyone for the last three, I would say he hasn't actually been the number 1 act in the first two weeks.  I thought Aiden won the first week and John last week.

Look for instance at the Wagner situation.  I personally think it's not going to be in his favour but all his backers simply say "all the anti Cowell voters will back him now" etc etc.  I wonder if they REALLY think that?

Particularly relevant to this forum, is convergence theory.

You're obviously far more inteligent than me.  What is 'convergence theory'?

PS  Billies have no market up for the viewing figures this week?
By:
Cider
When: 23 Oct 10 13:22
No viewing fig markets, Finnish for now it seems. Pity, I wanted to play on some series markets but they have gone.

Contagion theory states a crowd will cause or lead people to behave in a certain way. Opposite to that in convergence theory which leads people to form groups that hold certain views. It's conjecture which one is dominant on this forum, I believe convergence, I don't think people are swayed by vocal threads but feel enabled to become vocal themselves because of them.

My betting MO, or base starting point is to oppose the favourite/crowd. The crowd will be right at times but the better value usually comes with opposing it. IMO it's folly to oppose the crowd for the sake of it as it will often be right.

Of course it is worth stating that the betting crowd is completely separate to the voting crowd. The voting crowd is relatively easy to predict on xf.

Convergence is evident on xf, because overtly and covertly Cowell tries to sway the crowd to his way of thinking. However, in the end, as in Dan's case they won't always do what they are told.

Matter of interest Cider.  What did you think of Danyl last year?  I personally thought he was the best singer but just came across a bit cocky.  Very hard done by though I think with all the bad press.  Most hated him on here but I stuck up for him all the way.  Thought he was very good myself.
By:

When: 23 Oct 10 13:55
I think they did do what they were told largely in Dan's case - without Cowell's support he would have been out long before.

Betting aside I thought he was ok, nothing more, always looked like his own biggest fan. One or two decent performances.

Relative to betting he was always very easy to oppose, a hugely rehearsed audition which he was never going to be able to match live and an irritating personality to boot.

7th week 2 and 9th week 3 stu. Different factors after that but he was always doomed.

Without pimping I think he could have come stone cold last each week - his personality was one of the worst I've seen on these shows.

I actually suspect he's a bullshiner, LOU. However, unlikely the xf voters will ever pick up on it. If Frankie can do it, so can Matt [;)]

Agreed

Matt's done nothing wrong at all and seems a nice chap to me too(apart from ditching his gf becaue XF asked him to)
- should be around for a couple more weeks at least
