Bout time the Ozzie's won this, punters seem to be steaming into the price over the last few days :)

Fig, I'd say the 'hook' is the violin for certain

But there's nothing hooky about the actual violin part. Or not for me anyway, after 5 or 6 listens.

Maybe not a fair comparison, but I'm sure we could all hum the violin part to Fairytale. I couldn't hum this one. This is just a generic violin part

I'd call it a classic ballad H. And very memorable. I could sing the chorus after a couple of listens

As for no one likes Oz. Dami Im scored televote 191pts and Delta and this song are more voteable for me. They also won the semi final from pimp slot a couple of years back, with that soft rock song

The violin is certainly a different style and use to that in Fairytale, though I still find it just as effective (in a different way). It's used for the drama, and playing off his vocal parts, like a back and forth in this composition.

Yes, you may not personally like it, but it seems many do, and it is a form of 'impactful' song that doesn't go unnoticed - which in voting situations is a key issue.

Take the violin out of that, and it doesn't even qualify. But I spose that's Eurovision for you.

Many songs would be nothing without the instrumental aspects of the songs. It's not that unusual to need instruments as the main basis of song really. Genres like Heavy Metal wouldn't even exist without the instruments Grin

So, I don't think it's limited to Eurovision.

There's no doubt the song and performance has drama, stu. However it just feels likes style over substance to me. Where's the song? Bring in Finnish doesn't help, but it has no singability. If that's a word

I can't think of a winning song that you couldn't sing after a few listens. It's a bit cliched, but I was singing the 'One touch, one kiss, All my life for a night like this' part of Oz song after a couple of listens

Same with France and the Regarde Moi, Regarde Toi, refrain

There's nothing singable in the Finland. No strong melody. Just some nice violin

I'm old enough to remember Ding Ding a Dong and the Israel song. 'I wanna be a bonnie bear' Or something similar

Can anyone sing any of the Finland durge?

But, the question should be is that really the criteria - not sure I would instantly hum along to winning songs like Ukraine (2016) or even Netherlands (2019) or Tattoo (2023) even Swiss winning in 2024 not obviously a sing-along song too.

They won due to other factors with their songs, some kind of resonance and impact with the listeners. That's all they need to win.
By:

With all the songs out I don't remember such a dull, unoriginal T2. They are competent, I respect it's an intelligent market, so I'll be neutral on them. There are songs like France who could sweep through and that makes it an interesting year.

If the Violin is going to provide a win this year then it has to be for Greece.

such a dull, unoriginal T2

They may have some faults, or criticisms, but not sure I could call them those two things above. How many songs were identical to a song like Finland? And dull suggests a lack of drama in a song, surely not with this one?
By:

Also France are actually now the T2, not Denmark, in the market Grin

To be fair, I find myself humming to Finland all the time. Both his bit, and when she goes hard on the violin, especially her do-do-dah-do-dah Laugh helps I listened to it dozens of times to analyse

haha fair enough lifter. I've not over listened to any of them this year. Probably half a dozen times for Finland and still can't remember any of it. Unlike all the other front 6 or so

I can't agree about Arcade and Tattoo, not being full of hooks stu. Arcade had Carry me, carry me, carry me home and then the chorus of loving you is a losing game. Tattoo, something about rain and pain and youuu oooo ooo. I can't understand a word she says Grin Catchy though

1944 a little trippy and more of a performance piece, but it had lots of mates and a big diaspora. And was 20/1 going into the contest. Not 2.8
By:
stu
When: 31 Mar 26 13:51
TBF I'm not sure I'd suggest backing Finland now, at 2.8.

Coming new to the market it might potentially not give enough value. I'm only really a supporter of it as a 'valid favourite' rather than suggesting it is currently massive value. It's priced about right currently IMO.

As lifter says though, there's plenty musical hooks (some which I hum along to most days) in this song though! Grin I don't think the polls would have it so high if it didn't.

Holy Moly, I've been putting off the 'work' on this, got back from a night in town and hey ho, let's
have a first look at the contestants.

Watched one video so far, the favourites Findland.

NO WAY!!

This can't be the winner surely?

If it was sung in a higher register by the violinist, and there was no balding 35yo bloke giving it a 'kebab shop' vibe then hey maybe, but as is.... No No No.

The rest of the field must be AWFUL if this is who you are backing.

off to look a somee of the other contestants.

Very safe slightly boring use of the I-IV-V-VI

Little dull in the first half, moves into an emotive inducing pentatonic drum/alto melody voice 2nd half akin to the "On the money" alien performance song in the 5th element.

A possible but not a shoe in

Denmark

Great 20-30 seconds opener, handsome/beautiful young man singing/looking straight at camera and then
Boom... turn up the (Dunno what word will get past the censor so lets say) 'player of the pink oboe' button to 10

To much, OTT for the eurovision brand.

the song progressions are uninteresting in the first half, again it's a trip round the I-IV-V, but the rhythm cycle progression saves the 2nd half and gives it more drama than France's entry.

If this was performed with inferred (Volume 3) lbgt instead of volume 10 lbgt I'd say it's a strong contender in the context of the 2024-2025 Switzerland-Austria progression.

Will have to mull this one over

Almost, almost, almost...

1st half full of 2000-2010 pop girl gold, very Isreali-eurovision-esque production sound.

2nd half missed out on a crescendo capitalisation that the first half promised.
Not sure the faux euro drum drama will get it over the line.

so far, looked at the top 4 and only conclusion is not the favourite.

I should point out that I was listening the songs and posting (^^above) thru very thick beergoogles last night.Crazy

I've just listened to all 35 songs and given myself brain fog.

Finland is not as bad as I initially thought, the violin carries the song much better than the singer, Can a violin win ESC2026?

The rest of the top 6 all have merits. It seems a much closer contest this year compared to the previous 2.

Really liking France, but I'll have to listen to the top six again to see if I can spot the winner.

Henry; it means using what's known as 'a three chord trick', where the song only uses three different chords, which typically follow a set pattern, such as the ' I-IV-V-VI' progression. Think of virtually any 50's rock'n'roll, any traditional country or old-time blues song, they are all three chord tricks; four bars of chord I, then two bars of chord IV, back to two bars of chord I, before one bar of chord V, one of chord IV, one of chord I, then the final one bar of chord V, before starting the whole pattern again for the second verse. AKA '12 bar blues'

I've put in a few more hours on this and it's a lot more difficult this year with the top 4 all having
some pros and cons.

Finland
All of the gold is in the violin and the soon to be iconic dress, terrible singer.
(Listen to the audience cheer when she starts playing)
Can a Violin win it?

France
Not won it since 1977 (Is that a pro or a con?)
Great song, pretty much every word has intonation.
on ESC brand image.
The balance between the drums and vocals is quite important for the 'moments' in this song, Will it perform live as well as video?

Denmark
Very much in the Genre of the previous two winners.
But, he only has a 'pretty' voice for half the song, and his clothing is not on brand for some
of the demographic that voted for the previous two winners.

Austrailia
As I said first time
Almost, Almost, Almost...
First half of the song has got some 'it', 2nd half seems to be a bit of a mish mash.
Holding the competition in Australia 2027 probably good for the ESC brand and may have synergies
their new Asian version start up.

It's a 4 way fight between
A) A violin
B) A strong french song with likely broad appeal across eastern Europe
C) A combo of the last two winners
D) A reasonably well crafted song that you only remember 1 bar of.

I dunno who the winner is (yet)

Anyone got any other angles?
Do any of the contestants have any prior social media footprint?

Thanks Tim, I remember you're a multi instrument player.

Escapee A Finland - rather sh*t imo but very big lead in popularity indicators - so could win.

B France - a breath of fresh air, she's not missed a note live. Piano version https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fOvxq61sJ_8&list=RDfOvxq61sJ_8&start_radio=1
I like her style too, bovver boots and all.

C Denmark - got it a low green atm but eager to lay if it ever proves to be a fanw*nk - let's see the SF aftermath.

D Aus - isn't this taking the ESC a long way back in time?

If The favourite Finland win then they will be the oldest ever ESC winner.
Not a great strapline for the ESC, especially in the context of them announcing a new youth focus and initiative
lastyear,  implementing such things as 2 additional youth members to each jury panel.

It's a difficult year, Initially I was thinking I'm not going to be able to pick the winner
as it seems there is no obvious stand out song.

I think the winner will be obvious with hindsight.
"It's exactly the same genre as last 2 winners" or "That violin stands out and that Dress is on ESC Branding target" or "Australia is great for ESC brand"

It could be any of those with hindsight. But I'm going for "Youth, the ESC are shoring up their youth demographic and she's the stand out youth entry"

So I'm declaring: FRANCE the winner is FRANCE
