Some Olynmpic stats from AI

59% of the UK population watched 15 minutes or more of the Paris Olympics  .  so what's that likely to be 95% of the SPOTY audience?

The most watched event of the 2024 Olympics was the 800m final which Keely won (An English Rose against a field of ethnic runners) with 9.1m viewers

The most followed Olympic sport in the UK is athletics with 32% of the UK population

Littler is the biggest story of the year 2024

2023 Mary Earps was the biggest story of the year

2022 Beth Mead was the biggest story of the year

2021 Emma Raducanu was the biggest story of the year

The best female 800m runner in the world or a young lard arse who lost a final nearly a year ago?
Prices are still barmy.
Hope it's a consolation to Littler backers when he picks up the award for YSPOTY.

Silver at the 2021 Olympics as a 19yo and silver at the last two World Championships.  A strong back catalogue and unbeaten all year, (I think without checking) including the European Championship that most if not all of our top athletes skipped.  Well respected and loved within UK athletics.

Emma had a nice little run at wimbledon and became darling of centre court

I even suggested her for spoty at that point, long before she won in usa.

That's what the award is about, as well as winning stuff.

The lottery funding has made us so much better at sport that simply winning
isn't always enough, and non winners like wyatt earp last year can be
competitive with a good story.

I do think ladies athletics gold medals are a bit special so we have a good race
and Joe root setting records would normally give him a shot. It matters not that
he lost his world no1 batting spot to Harry Brook, but make a note of Harry.

Then we have possibly best footballer on planet who's unlikely to make top 4 of 6.

Hey ho, best spoty year in ages.

It's about being the face of the Olympics more than an athletics vote per se

Farah and Peacock both top 3 in a non Olympic year, although imo Froome would have walked it that year had it non been for the drug cheat accusations the week before the vote.

Its been 12 years since athletics had a decent turnout, lots of the core vote has sadly moved on - hence the rapid decline
