Strauss & Cook shared the cricket vote in 2011. If only 1 of them had been shortlisted, would've likely finished top 3.

Would only be interested in Cook at a much bigger price. Sky having the test cricket is a setback.

There is very little tradition in cricketers winning the award. I wouldn't be on Cook at many prices. And I can't really think of a stand out player in terms of ability, personality and public perception that would be required to win the award like the previous two cricketers to win it - Botham and Flintoff.

Cook is an awful price imo.  Murrayat 4.5 ( thats my ton btw) would be a great price if I can find some mug to lay it.

Andy Murray is 3/1 to win wimbers, if he wins that then he wins spoty, if he doesnt but wins any other major then he still probably wins.  Wtf is he 4.5 on here?

At the start of last year, most people would have said the same. He won his major (and an olympic gold) and still didn't win.

A potential double ashes win makes a cricketer a good chance of winning.

A lot depends on when the show is. If its 15th December (which I think it will be), whey are 2.5 tests through the series. If it's 22nd they are 3 games through and could have the series won.

2013 is not goingto be anything like 2012 though clearly.  People like Trott and J Kenny didnt even make the last 12.  Not saying Murray will win it but 4.5 is a stand out price mo. he is odds on to win a major and that should just about do it for me.  Personally I would put that above a jess eniss gold or even a mo farah double.  No one is a bigger cricket fan than me (just been to bangalore to try and watch India v Pak, having watched the last test v India) but for starters we have to win the ashes, which is not a given, then we need a stand out performance from Cook, i know he is great but it is hardly a given that he will score a hatful of runs, would need to do something similar to 2010/11 to seriously figure and he didnt figure much in spoty that/those years.  Also he is not a boys own hero in the style of freddie.  KP could produce some magic but he isnt mr popular following last summers shenanigans, what potential stars do we have left?  Swann, jimmt, very long shots imo.  And all that comes to nought anyway if Murray wins wimbers.  Of course if murray wins nothing (5/4 last time i looked) then he of course wont win.

With Muzza though you have to factor in a 'no show' - if he'd bothered turning up this year I suspect result would have been closer to pre-show online polls. He might have reversed positions with Jess.
Probably wouldnt make much difference if he bagged Wimbers mind.

Wouldn't back a cricketer at any price.  I like sport but as a non sky user I now have little interest in a sport I once loved (at international level anyway). I wouldn't recognise 90% of England players if they passed me in the street.

I suspect I am becoming more typical. Throw in the majority (?) of voters are female and I would be amazed if most of them were different to me and it shows the mountain a cricketer would have to climb to win.  Plus its a team game.

Any they ignore Golden Rule 75...don't wear hats Laugh

Test cricket is great at the moment, perhaps not the quality of fast bowlers of days of old, but there is still Steyn (already an alltime great) Morkel, philander, finn, Anderson and some of the aussies are tidy enough.  Been a mixed year for england, but the win in india was a great achievement.  Us v saffers was a case of the two best teams in the world going toe to toe and it was a very good series which england were actually only 70 runs with 3 wickets left from saving. As it was we lost 2-0 and deserved to do so, still great cricket, Amla was immovable. Just a shame it wasnt four or five tests.

Must be a story to be told in the line "went to bangalore to try to watch India v Pak"?

ot but watched a couple of US basketball games last night and won on both trading. Only pennies to try it out but seems to have the same internal dynamics as tennis ie someone scores and their price goes in as though a basket or a point at tennis means much on their own.

I was here for nagpur decided to stay on over christmas as nothing for me inengland over christmas and am forced to take ten days off work over christmas so cant even make mney.  Watched the second T20 in mmbai, luckily blagged a cricket at the last minute, was a great atmosphere, thought it would be even better to see india v pak, but despite tickets originally going on sale at three quid a pop they were around the two hundred quid mark on the black market, too much for me.  So am relaxing in a beach bar in goa now.

If you've not before, would recommend going to Oz for Ashes, rob. Was there for 98/99 series & witnessed amazing Eng win in 4th test at MCG when Ramps took a wonder catch to dismiss Langer & then Dean Headley & Darren Gough bowled like men possessed, roared on by the Eng fans, to skittle Oz with S.Waugh left stranded - never experienced a better live sporting atmosphere than that. Then on to Sydney & got to witness further euphoria when Gough took a test hat-trick.

Returned there in 2010 & saw Cook's remarkable batting to help save the match at the Gabba, & our great win in Adelaide. Test cricket fans will be spoiled in 2013, with 9 Ashes tests, 5 home & 4 away, the 10th & last one obviously at the start of 2014 in Sydney.

I would love to go for the ashes next winter but unfortunately aus aint cheap these days, not beyond the realms of possibility mind.  Also the coward in me doesnt want to go to aus and lose, i would hate it,  i loved Nagpur but if we hadve lost well it wouldnt have been the end of the world just a bit of a downer.  Going to aus and losing the ashes would p1ss me right off especially as i wouldve spent thousands of pounds going there.

Went to Oz in 1986 and saw England at the MCG. Botham coming out to bat filled me with hope...but not for long.  And the Oz fans were very kind asking someone to give England fans a bar of soap. F occas Wink

Aussies are the workst cricket fans in the world, the injuns were a great crack on the last day at nagpur, at the scg the convicts didnt even turn up.  Pathetic.  As the song goes, we are the loyalist cricket supporters the world has ever known.

I think 4.5 is a fair price for Muzza - are there any major events likely to impact the market before Wimbledon?

If he wins Wimbledon he is about 1.2 or shorter for SPOTY, plus you have the free ride that one major may be enough for him with the Aussie and French slams before Wimbledon. He may even feel with doubts over Nadal that the French is a chance this year.

Following my earlier post, been looking through the sporting calendar this year.

Murray is a stand out favourite but Sinfield represents the best trading opportunity at around 85s.

The odd years are traditionally week (as no Olympics etc). Apart from Murray there is no obvious contender.

However, this year it is the Rugby League World Cup. England will most likely be captained by Kevin Sinfield (66/1 to 100/1 for SPOTY on high street). He is in his early thirties and has won a shed load of trophies with Leeds Rhinos over the years. He is pretty much the Tony McCoy of Rugby league, respected by fans of all club for his exploits over the years. See attached link if in any doubt:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/rugby-league/20909083

The WC final is 30 November - which is perfect timing for SPOTY in mid December as any success will be fresh in the mind. England are the host country as well, with semi finals at wembley and final at old trafford. So could be plenty of hype and euphoria being generated at the right time.

Also, BBC are likely to have screening rights to a lot of the games, including semis and final, which gives scope for plenty of footage on the night and an excuse to “pimp” it up, being one of “their” sports, rather than a sky exclusive.

England are 8/1 to win it and in my opinion are very likely to at least make the final. (The racing post tipped England to win the world cup in their new years special).

If they make the final then he is almost certain to make the shortlist. If they win it he is a shoo-in!

They are probably an even money chance to make the final. Given the shortlist is likely to be announced between semi final and final, then his name will be up there at the right time. If they make the final, then I can see him trading at single figures.

Every sport seems to have its day in the sun and if he does make the shortlist then I can see R League fans mounting a campaign to get the 300,000 or so votes he will need to win in a non olympic year (a la the racing campaign for McCoy), recognising not just his world cup atonements but his glittering career in the sport.

Most bookies are doing 66/1 each way 1/5 1,2,3.

Good luck

SKY have exclusive rights to live Superleague matches. The world cup is an uncompetitive joke and England wont be winning it.

Murray could win this without winning a major imo

Problem is when the shortlist is decided and/or announced. The RL World Cup might still be in the group stages, or certainly early knock-out stages, by the time the panel makes its decision.
