There'll always be someone naturally more popular than Rory in the shortlist. He'd need a couple of major wins I think

I have backed Westwood at 50/1.

I think if he wins a major that all of golf will get behind him far more than they will do with Donald or McIlroy.

If he won the British open he could even be odds on IMHO.

Murray has to win Wimbledon to win it and I just feel that isn't going to happen.

Thing is GB, I don't understand why Rory isn't popular.

Darlo,

Some people click with the public and others don't.  Rory just doesn't seem to have that connection!

Where as Ennis gets 2nd in probably the most hotly contested year ever for being average at 5 events yet she has a great public connection.

daley thompson was average at ten events and was very popular

I agree Donny.  He was 'promoted' as the best athlete in the world which really was a joke.

He had a very amiable personality though just like Jess.

We all know who wins the 100 metres at an olympics but when no British competition no one would have a clue who won the Decathlon or the Pentathlon?

daley followed on the coat tails of the great bruce jenner
and multi events were in vogue

easton sets a decent standard in jumping and sprinting

Murray anywhere above 4.5 looks value to me
By:

When: 18 Dec 12 12:30
Alastair cook probably a good shout above 10 as well
By:

When: 18 Dec 12 12:33
And on the lay side Farah anywhere south of 10
By:
nigelpm1
When: 18 Dec 12 12:34
Not planning to get involved for a while though but will keep an eye out Wink

TdF is going to be hugely competitive this year and whilst Froome has a great chance even if he wins he won't be odds on for SPOTY.

If it's not Muzza's turn it could be Jess

People will still be clinging to that olympic spirit next year, and she got a cracking turnout in the end

Probably right - what's the athletics calendar looking like?

Might be reason to give that idea a wide berth

I can't see how the Sinfield at 66/1 is a bet to have right now.  The RL world cup isn't on until the back end of the year anyway and so much can happen before then that could make the 66 look stupidly short but very little can happen in the meantime to make it look any sort of value.  Plus he's not getting any younger in a tough sport for injuries.  Much better to leave until 3rd week in Oct and see how the land lies then.

The 2012 shortlist was announced at a date which would be before the 2013 Rugby League World Cup is actually finished.

What if the 2013 one is too?

You cannot see the BBC's panel of worthies and luvvies being RL friendly either
By:

almost impossible at this stage

when the likes of Ryan Giggs and Mark Cavendish can win in non-Olympic years then anything can happen

the only thing that is certain is that if Murray wins Wimbledon then he will win SPOTY. Massive IF though, much depending on whether Nadal is fit and able to play at his best

if Mo couldn't get in the top 3 this year he ain't ever winning imo
By:
donny osmond
When: 19 Dec 12 14:33
if mo smashed a few records as ovett / coe / and cram did live on terrestial tv then dotted up in the great north run he might come close again

his training partner is a ready made pace maker if thats what they go for

any near miss from this year will be a contender if they achieve and the other near misses dont,

i wouldnt want to back at singles figures , as this could be over in january ....

feel a bit foolish now Blush

Interesting to note Cav's total from last year would have beat Mo this year

I guess people will no longer underestimate cycling

lol maybe people now understand why he's so liked.

the bit i really overlooked was the excitement of his gold medal...huge crowds and a fantastic feelgood factor.

1 million for the road race in which he buried himself for cav, and probably as many for the time trial

for many folk, those free to view events were their olympics, the rest was just tv

yeah, as I posted back in August, millions lining the streets chanting "GO WIGGO GO" was pretty apparent

no matter what Mo does, nothing will come close to winning the double in London including being part of Super Saturday and then having another massive Saturday night a week later and I can't see him ever winning the main award. Get a Lifetime Achievement when he retires (I mean fecking Beckham got that), at least the public don't vote for that one

it's a shame because that was my highlight of the whole year and he was clearly more deserving than Ennis and he should have been on the podium at least... he's a lay if he goes shortish

It was my greatest sporting moment of the year too, but he wasn't my spoty vote
By:
Darlo Bantam
When: 19 Dec 12 16:34
I was there that night and the sporting moment of my viewing life but he only made my second place. I agree his career could barely reach the heights of last summer, but for the purpose of SPOTY few sportsmen's career will match that of many of those last year.
By:

When: 19 Dec 12 16:39
Don't think this means you can entirely rule the guy out of spoty ever....

It just means people had someone they preferred

Say he won the marathon in rio and Jess tripped over a log he's prolly be a shoo in

it's interesting that people don't vote for their greatest sporting moment of the year in spoty

that's all I've ever done, vote for who I think did the greatest achievement and given I'm a huge tennis geek, and have waited 40+ years for a Brit to win a slam, for Mo to win my vote over Murray tells you how great an achievement it was

I never got why Ennis was so popular myself and given the events that happened I still struggle to see why she got so many more votes than Mo. Prolly done me a favour coz my only bet was Murray top 3 finish (I expected a tricast of Wiggo - Muzza -Mo)

ho hum
By:

Ennis did well because it's both a popularity contest as well as sporting contest.
By:
donny osmond
When: 19 Dec 12 16:47
i didnt think mos was a great moment compared to wiggo or murray, or rory

its up to the individual to decide, thats why this is a good forum, and polls are useful
