Nice to see AP shortening
If Wales win tomorrow it's ideal campaigning stuff for 1/2p. They love him there I could easily see both Farah and Froome missing the t3 |

I'm surprised this is even a cause for debate. The value in Wiggins very short price was debatable given the drug rumours floating around cycling last year, not to mention the iconic achievements by athletes like Jess at a home Olympics. But Murray this year is the definitive bank job.

No-one can doubt the credentials of a Wimbledon Mens Singles Champion. (How many people thought or even discussed the possibility of Jonny Marray Wimbledon Mens Doubles Champion 2012 making the SPOTY shortlist?...and if not why not? His winning achievement last year was equal or greater than many that made the shortlist. There are just 5 separate events at each Tennis Grand Slam tournaments, yet 500 separate events at every athletics, swimming and track cycling meetings which waters down the achievement.)
The reason for debate Johnny is the fact that once nominated we all know it is then a public popularity contest. The word 'personality' is incorrectly part of the name as it should simply be 'Sports Person of The Year' but it was called 'personality' to distinguish the fact that the nominees were supposed to be household names rather than known only in their immediate sporting circles a la Bob Nudd. Not all of the public are aware of this and hold this 'personality' word against Murray as can be seen on any social media. As I said on November 28, 2013 @ 12:24: In his 7 years of shortlist nominations Murray has a best of 14.17% of the public vote in 2012 and in the all other 6 nominaton years a 2nd best of just 5.48% of the public vote. In 2011 McCoy secured 293k phone votes which was 41.98% of the overall vote ~ since 2006 under the current 'phone vote' system only Super-Smashing-Great Sprint 'King' Cav has done better in returning 49.47% of the vote. 293k would probably win the award again for AP andsubscribers to Horse and Hound are unlikely to be distracted by the shenanigans going on over on the other channel, but other demographics may well be. (Also difficult to see the sailing fraternity being sidetracked by the circus on the other side.) With decent opposition in the shape of Murray, AP supporters will be out in force, super motivated and passionate about bringing their man home by multi-voting him to yet another victory. Back in 2002 in his only previous shortlist outing, McCoy finished 3rd overall having secured 88k votes. All in all what this points to is that whilst being a genuinely worthy frontrunner and favourite, Murray is simply far too short at 1.04/1.05 in a 90 minute public popularity contest given the nominees personal public profile and history... So the question remains how many people whilst believing that a Wimbledon Mens Singles Champion would certainly be a deserving SPOTY 2013 winner are actually going to then spend their hard earned cash just before Christmas by picking up the phone and voting for a Scottish multi-millionaire, (at this time of possible Scottish Independence), and who may not even attend in person not because he is competing hard in a tournament somewhere, but because he's getting some sunshine on his back in Miami... |

I respect Mo Farrah's achievements but 5k, 10k track running is nowhere near as competitive as men's tennis. Murray is competing in an era with the 2 greatest players of all time + Djokovic who could join those 2.

its free to vote this year......hard earned not required on interweb

For anyone who really thinks it's super short there's £20k to be had at 1.05 - Only need a £1k in the bank. What are you waiting for?

Shirley - how does multi voting make it any worse for Murray than the others?
|
|
By:
I won't be backing him, at any price. I gave up on this event after the sham that was Zara Phillips.

Notable there that Froome manages just 6% on the cycling daily news aka the Guardian
Good showings for 1/2p, and Mccoy on the Mirror but less elsewhere The podium spots look 2 from those 3 and Farah. None are certain t3 |

Incredible people still backing Murray at 1.04 when it's possible potentially to vote an unlimited number of times for someone else for free. I'm sure a few people will have the idea of voting a lot for AP...
