I find it somewhat mysterious how, in the eyes of the layperson, Wiggins is considered to have a personality, by dint of possessing a pair of comedy sideburns & sitting on a throne at Hampton Court, whereas Muzza refuses to speak in platitudes & bares far more of his soul to viewers in interview due to his honesty, and yet, because of his dour, monotone Scottish accent is considered not to have a personality. I guess all this proves is the GBP are suckers for the populist nonsense fed to them by our media.

JR - it continues the tabloid diatribe that said he hated England (despite all evidence to the contrary), had no sense of humour (despite demonstrating he has on many occasions) and was/is a choker that will never win a 'major' tournament
in the mind of those that only allow tabloid opinion to inform their own, these positions are set in stone forever. Once you earn a label you can never ever ever remove it through deed or action. They decide you are a choker, then you are a choker for life. No sense of humour? Even making people laugh in post match and chat show interviews won't prove you do It is the behaviour of simpletons and nothing you say or do will ever change their minds |

Wasn't referring to any particular interview, Darlo, just the general consensus. Muzza deserves to receive bravery medals dealing with the inane questions of Gary Richardson during Wimbledon fortnight, but that's worthy of a different thread.
By:
I was only on about that interview the other day. I don't think he's the only sportsman subject of inane questioning though. It seems to be a prerequisite of sports monkey journalists.
By:
Murray got quite a roasting when in the audience of HIGNFY. He took it really well, laughing away at himself, his mother, and his relationship with his girlfriend
By:
Richardson is an embarrassment to sports journalism. Tune into his 5Live show on a Sunday morning. His leading questions are laughably bad.

There's a very strange mis-match between the three markets on here: McCoy 2nd favourite for the win yet 3rd fav w/o Muzza?
By:
Evidence clearly shows AP should be 2nd favourite in the w/o market:
In 2011 McCoy secured 293k phone votes which was 41.98% of the overall vote ~ since 2006 under the current 'phone vote' system only Super-Smashing-Great Sprint 'King' Cav has done better in returning 49.47% of the vote. 293k would probably win the award again for AP andsubscribers to Horse and Hound are unlikely to be distracted by the shenanigans going on over on the other channel, but other demographics may well be. (Also difficult to see the sailing fraternity being sidetracked by the circus on the other side.) With decent opposition in the shape of Murray, AP supporters will be out in force, super motivated and passionate about bringing their man home by multi-voting him to yet another victory. Back in 2002 in his only previous shortlist outing, McCoy finished 3rd overall having secured 88k votes...compare this all with current w/o Murray favourite Mo Farah who returned just 8.71% of the vote in 2011 and 8.07% in 2012. (In his 8 years of shortlist nominations Murray has a best of 14.17% in 2012 and in the all other years a 2nd best of just 5.48% of the vote) Of course another to keep an eye on is Chris Froome as the cycling lobby will be hoping to keep their sport firmly in the public eye by nailing an unprecedented 3rd consecutive SPOTY award winner in the shape of TDF winner Chris Froome, who we all know was also 'the main man' in last years's TDF as well as this, and but for team orders would have now been an unprecedented British back-to-back TDF winner. Cycling won in 2008 (Hoy), 2011 (Super-Smashing-Great Sprint 'King' Cav) and 2012 (Wiggo) so they will be keen to try and make it a cycling hat-trick. All in all what this points to is that whilst being a genuinely worthy frontrunner and favourite, Murray is simply far too short at 1.04/1.05 in a 90 minute public popularity contest given the nominees personal public profile and history...and Mo Farah whose results and performances have been outstanding over the past three years, perhaps does not have the natural level of voter support as do the others. Farah is miles away from setting any world records and until he does just how 'great' really is he the public will be asking themselves. |

I cannot disagree with that. It's crazy short. That said I cannot see anybody except McCoy toppling him and that would need to be with another racing fraternity voting effort. |

there is easily time for a campaign for any of the nominees to win , given that there is a free internet vote on the night
it wont be expensive can the paralympians raise a campaign to highlite disability discrimination in the uk ? |
By:
By:
some people are put off by the cost of a campaign, but now its free
hopefully if a decent campaign exists then we will hear about it must confess to slightly cold feet over murray ! |
By:
If I was carrying a red on the field for a green on Murray I would be dead nervous. 1.04-1.05 is just plain silly, never before have we seen a price that short on SPOTY.
It's going to drift. |

freddie hit 1.01 iirc

johnny wilk was 1.01, iirc

Get some lays down at 1.01 boys. kerching

no good ramping this Shirley.
By:
You'll get 1.06 if you are extremely lucky.
By:
...or if you're simply wearing you're lucky lucky pants Richard
By:
Murray's achievement arguably greater to a Sunday night BBC audience than Wilko or Freddie - personally I'm very surprised he isn't 1.01.
By:
arguably not
freddie and johnny had no serious competition and spoty was their tribute, or coronation how will bbc stage this years event, theres the question ? |

Absolutely no way Donny. Murray's achievement here is beyond anything that's gone before from a BBC audience.
By:
Muuray's achievement eclipses anything ever done on SPOTY. He should be about as backable as Frankel in a 1 horse race. But this is SPOTY and it often defies all logic.

the lifting of the Wimbledon trophy is only the culmination of a very long story
from bursting onto the scene as a teenager, making several slam finals, losing to RF in the 2012 final and the tearful speech afterwards, the redemption in the Olympics, becoming the first British male slam winner at the USO then finally fulfilling his potential by beating the World #1 on centre court the BBC have all the material they need to turn this into a virtual coronation |
By:
they do judorick, but will they ?
you might argue he won more last year than this i still think he deserves to win and would love him to get the edit and coronation but with free voting this year and social media its a different ball game |
By:
Does free voting not make it more likely that Murray gets it,
If you don't have to pay for a vote the casual spoty watchers can have more of a say, Any campaigns by a particular sport like cycling or horse racing can be washed away in a mass vote. Many families that know nothing of sport will be aware of Murray's wimbledon win. Free voting is a help for Murray imo |
By:
I remember all the excitement last year from the Wiggins layers because there was only a 30 mins slot - how much difference did it make? If anything it strengthened his vote. Expect the same situation this year with Murray.

FWIW Andy Murray has more followers than the other nine nominees put together. But I don't think it will have any impact on working out the winner.
