Who was 7.2 George?
Big money waiting to back Russia. It may have to come down in price because nobody's going up to match it. |
|
By:
I guess you must mean Italy dropped to 7.2. It's with a double "r". (I thought - the Azeri can't be 7.2)
|
|
By:
And an "o" in the singular.
|
|
By:
And an "e" in the feminine.
|
|
By:
Sorry, that would be an "a" in the feminine singular.

You see how easily these confusions can arise?

I was hoping to buy up some more Italy but the price just seems to be dropping here so that I could get a better deal elsewhere...
The discussion here has pretty much reinforced my impression that this contest is Italy's to lose... Those that don't favor Italy simply cannot agree on an alternative - the same will apply to the juries and the general public... Russia is a joke and since the grannies have attained their goal of collecting enough cash to build their church why take further pity on them? Sweden offers a song reminiscent of the 90's - it's the usual fast-paced dance track that would perform extremely well in a disco filled with hardcore Eurovisionists but will fail to impress the general public to the same degree... I personally like Spain and Macedonia but there is no question that these songs will never move into contention... There are no other songs that really stand out like Italy... Besides, Roma 2012 is in everybody's interest. Apparently Italy, Greece and Cyprus (others to follow?) will not be sending commentators to Baku (presumably for financial reasons)... In times of austerity with some members of the EBU struggling to pay their contribution, can Eurovision even afford to lose Italy? |

Spanky the best song doesn't necessarily win by any means, unless it is really special. I love Italy but it's not that special. Last year a boring ballad won.
|
|
By:
No it wasn't a ballad was it, some kind of duet thing.

Bexley, I'm not hoping to do any convincing here - I'd like to get a couple thousand more matched on Italy at 10...
![]() My take is that the song is not only different from all others and has a broad appeal (to soul and jazz fans) but that Nina is a very good live performer with a lot of sex appeal as we can see in this video, for example: http://www.esctoday.com/news/read/18732 I think she has quite appropriately been termed "a Lena for adults..." Henry VIII, I fully agree with you and I put a sizable amount of money on Azerbaijan last year (after the semifinals). I felt that their performance (duet) really would stand out... Estonia's staging looked like something assembled by a group of schoolchildren while Kati Wolf's luster came off on stage and I never thought that pop opera would fly... |
|
By:
Italy would be a more deserving favourite than the current rave song.
What do you think of Moldova Spanky? There's a rather tragic video of Moldova where he's on stage with the bridesmaid clown dancers but the video where he's on stage with musicians is better. |

Lena for adults is such a bad description by the way Spanky - Lena had a unique charm that had broad appeal, even to those who perhaps didn't like the song so much. Whoever came up with lena for adults obviously doesn't understand Eurovision and neither do the Italy backers imo.
The market moves mean nothing - UK has been backed in to a silly price last few days - it has no chance from draw 1 |
|
By:
The Italy backers at the current price I mean. Those on at 20/1 or more deserve a pat on the back

Henry its the fact its a ballad drawn 1 and that its not a Diasporo country song. Combination of factors though the draw sealed it for me

First live version I have seen of Romania - lot of fun as I expected and a good vocal

Romania 34 (first backed at 80) or Italy 9 ? hmm let me think about that one....
Reminds me of the French song a few years back that, although it had no chance, the price plunged on the night after the live performance. Fun, modern, I defy anyone not to want to dance along and with some reliable allies. If it gets a good draw this one is a potential winner. |

French song I was referring to was ofc "Allez Ola Olé" in 2010

lol @ Lena for adults.
Is this the Lena who was getting over 10 million views on youtube before the contest. Charting and receiving airplay all over Europe. Nina is more like this years Getter Jaani. A messy song and not much interest in her own country let alone elsewhere. Also the idea that Italy not sending a commentator to Baku is a positive is utterly laughable. |

Bexley, thanks for the Entertainment Odds article on Italy. They've been pretty good the last couple of years... Ultimately it boils down to your ESC instincts and they think that Denmark is better value (at current prices)... I think Denmark is playing for some of the same votes as Sweden and just don't see the song as a winner... What I will agree with, however, is that the likes of Sweden, Denmark, Iceland, Serbia, Norway and Romania will be right up there in the voting... I'm not convinced that Russia will, however. The novelty wears off and the Russian song certainly won't do very well on the radio. In fact, I don't think it will be very good for Eurovision if the song wins... Moreover, I still don't see where all of the televotes for Russia are supposed to materialize from. Why shouldn't Belgium and Slovenia (they youngest performers) get some of those sympathy votes? When has an artist ever been propelled to victory on the basis of pity? in terms of entertainment value, the grannies fall far, far behind artists such as Verka Serduchka.
Five Leaves, we do have the same impression of Getter Jaani... And I'm not saying that Italy not sending a commentator to Baku is a positive. It does underscore the importance of keeping costs down though. And, of course, keeping Italy in the competition will do so. Henry, I like Moldova. I see some continuity in their submissions over the last few years. Their song could maybe become a top 10 with a good draw but I don't see it as a winner. |

Why reward a country who can't make up their mind whether they want to remain in the contest over a country who have shown their commitment to the contest over many years and have sent one of their top singers to represent them this year?
I believe TPTB might feel it's Spain turn and they could run away with the jury vote. I also see as much more viewer friendly than many on here. Certainly more friendly then last years Italian number or the likes of Iceland this year, which is around the same price. Also as I posted on entertainmentodds I believe Nina has a touch of aloofness about her performances. I don't see this hugely engaging performer that others appear to. Any sign of aloofness is suicide in these shows for an attractive female looking for the votes of other females. |
|

I also see Spain*

Do you mean aloof in her videos? She's not aloof in the live versions of Out of Love or Per Sempre. |

She looks aloof to me here.

Maybe. She smiles and curtsies at the end though.
In both Rome and Venice she was more relaxed, got the crowd clapping with her towards the end and at the end was very smiley and bowed. |
|
By:
* I mean Firenze, not Venice
|
|
By:
yep, tbf if we see more of that smile at the end and a softer hairstyle it would be less of a concern.
If she goes for the severe hairstyle and serious look then by the time the smile comes, 90% of women will have already decided they hate her. |

ok guys, a few weeks to go
a couple of questions for the experts on here 1. will we continue to see tactical voting 2. if so what countries does that narrow it down to, regardsless of the quality 3. outside the tactical countries, what is the liveliest outsider Thanks in advance |
|
By:
Welcome eyeamgr8. I’m not an expert but any actual expert would feel immodest answering a question “for the experts”.
See this page for the voting blocks: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voting_at_the_Eurovision_Song_Contest “Tactical” is the wrong word, it’s just ex-pats voting for their home country. Wiki also has a separate page for each year of the competition. And read this thread for liveliest outsiders. Good luck. |

We've seen from many shows that effect on British women but I wonder if it's true on the continent. I find most European women tend to be more confident than British women. (Confident in a good way - it actually makes them less jealous/b1tchy/rude). |
