Robbie Deans (former sacked Australian coach) is seething, friends with his fellow kiwi the Scottish coach and was on the 3 man appeal committee that overturned the Scottish players suspension making them available for the match against Australia.

Deans the worst coach the Aussies have ever had. Couldn't wait for that guy to disappear.

"TMO cannot be used to determine if a penalty should or shouldn’t be given, only for offences in build-up to a try, foul play, or scoring of a try". Bit of a nonsensical statement. Of course foul play was involved because that is what a penalty is awarded for. the wording is poor here, as they MEAN foul play in the sense of "violent conduct", but that is not what the rules actually say... |

Accusations of cheating a bit far fetched. To be fair to Joubert in real time it looked a straight forward case of off side.

Is not the most amazing thing from all this:
We have got to this stage in a World Cup of Rugby, and only now seem to realise that there is a degree of lack of clarity in where and why the TMO can be used!? The point about 'clarify the sanction imposed' surely fits the bill here, meaning that a TMO can step in for a penalty? And, if that is not the case, then clearly it should be (as proven by this case). |
By:
That would be a nightmare. TMO is already a pain in the ass.
By:
There is the disruption element, that's true.
Whichever way though, isn't it amazing that even the rules on TMO don't seem clear?? |
By:
well it is cetainly a confusing picture stu because refs had been previously praised for use of
the tmo in open play in asking them to check certain things that we are now told they should not really have been using the tmo for. |
By:
It's not clear if the No8 touches the ball after Phipps and before the other bloke.
Looked for Joubert running off but it wasn't in the pictures at all. I'd like to see it. |
By:
Stu I thought it was clear. Tries and foul play.

joubert heads straight for the tunnel and if a bottle was thrown someone has a hell of an arm.
i think that was just made up. vine.co/v/e9rHaPTEhrT |

There is also a clause about 'clarifying a sanction' - that's wider?

Thanks northanlite.

i'd love to know what Hogg is saying to him as he passes

That pointing indicates possibly something unpleasant!!

you cant have a tmo for a penalty, because if its not given
and should be then how do you regain control of a game ? and in the breakdown you will often see penalties against both sides, so when play has stopped, how would you restart ? two balls ? its terrible what has happened to scotland, but its just a howler by the ref, tis pity they had not gathered their lineout ball ref has made a fool of himself too, by running away |
By:
True donny.
Makes me wonder what refs normally do after the game in this RWC. I've never taken much notice of them. |

My son was at the match. At first the jocks left him alone because he has red hair due to his Scottish ancestry. When they realised he was an Aussie they went mental, blaming him personally for Joubert's penalty. He had to fight around four or five hundred of them without assistance while his girlfriend held his beer for him. Fortunately there were a few drinks breaks during the battle where defeated Scotsmen kindly refilled his Heineken stocks. Robert Carlyle was the last Scot to put up his dukes. By this time they were standing ankle deep in red wigs. But he's no Begbie. He went and got the boy a beer instead. Then they left the ground arm in arm singing 500 Miles.

Northanlite - reports of a sprint are grossly exaggerated. More of a jog.

Maybe the ref was caught short and had to go!?
By:
Eeternaloptimist - " Wonderful heart shown by the Scots and the myth of the reformed Aussie tight five fully exposed."
Please don't spruik this aloud too much. Lancaster and the England squad feel bad enough already without learning their pack was dominated by a myth!! ![]() |

Was very disappointed by the after match interviews. Maybe I'm old fashioned. Too much Rudyard Kipling. To me the number one rule in a post match speech is to congratulate the opposition. Even through gritted teeth. In fact the grittier the teeth the more respect you earn. Neither the Scotland captain or coach could manage that. Not good.
By:
you were disappointed with the interviews!!!
can you imagine how they felt having to do one so soon after the whistle. the interviewer was only interested in asking them about certain incidents with them having to watch what they say or face a fine. give em a f***ing break. by the way your coach was an utterly graceless **** post match but i guess your one eye & selective hearing missed that. |
By:
Joubert and all of the other refs know the unwritten rule that they are all working to. Where they are unsure (and there was definitely doubt in this case) they can make their decision eg scrum to Australia for knock on and then ask the TMO to look for a possible infringement eg in lineout/obstruction/shoulder charge or whatever in run up to decision. The TMO will then run through and overturn the decision where relevant. In this case Joubert had made his mind up for whatever reason that he was awarding the penalty and was not interested in clarification....he knew his options. Jusdt look back at the 2011 RWC final to see how bad he can be.
By:
they would have given a scrum had they used tmo. whats the difficulty in that?
By:
Inside that is totally not true. Learn the rules before posting please.
Northanlite I understand they were devestated. The interviewer was a nobhead I agree. But having been a Captain myself and having to talk sh1t at after game speeches the Number 1 Rule is ALWAYS congratulate the other team. Grassroots rugby. |
By:
In such a defining moment Joubert should have been aware of the occasion, and taken an opinion from the TMO to confirm or alter his decision.
Whether the playing regulations allow for him to consult the TMO IN THAT INSTANT, should have been secondary to his determination to get the correct decision. It appears the wrong decision was made and that is damaging to rugby. Referees and Umpires rarely seem aware of the wider picture of presenting their sport correctly. The bad light in the test match in Abu Dhabi another case in point. 20 more minutes was all that was required. |
By:
refs in rugby and iam a fan have massive inflated opinions of theselves infact could be the ruin of the game
By:
KDM...that’s the point the rules state refs can’t use the TMO for decisions like a penalty for offside.....the unwritten rule is they all know they use it in the manner i mentioned in order to get tot he correct decision...
By:
despite raging at some of his decisions i find it staggering that world rugby have now put Joubert in the position they have by publicly saying he was wrong. I'm not sure how he can carry on now he's been so undermined.
i do wonder if this is more to do with his behaviour after the final whistle or perhaps just the last straw from a ref who has made a few howlers. at least it shuts up all those numpties who for some reason kept banging on that it was the correct call. |
By:
Going public and doing so as quick as this , is unusual in any sport .....what there agenda is is anyones guess.
Lots of Rugby Union decisions are borderline and open to interpretation , this is the root cause , not the refs decision. He clearly is being held out to dry. |
By:
ok, glad that's sorted.
when is the announcement on why the tmo did not intervene on the mitchell late challenge on hogg ? unlike the knock on, this was clearly an act of "foul play" |
By:
this has touched a few raw nerves it would seem but at the end of the day all the postulating and post mortems don't appear to have changed the result last time i looked

I have to disagree with the review committee, it looks like the ball comes of the Scottish player after Phipps knocks it back towards himself in attempting to regather the ball. You can tell by how fast the ball flies away it must of come off the Scottish player who was charging in. Also the Scottish player was not using his arms, he could of been penalised by the tmo.
Not surprised the rugby match official committee made this call to somewhat satisfy the huge number of whingers who want to make this the biggest story of the cup, now they've got what they wanted to hear they can move on and everyone can concentrate on the semi-finals between the 4 best teams at the tournament. |
By:
Scottish rugby should do an FAI on it after Thierry Henry's hand ball and ask to be included in the semifinals based on ref's wrong decision as Ireland asked for in the football world cup qualifiers. Won't get anywhere with the semi final request but could get an extra 5 million compensation that's if there is a Sepp Blatter equivalent in rugby.

Time for some clearer heads to prevail now after lots of us being less than kind towards Joubert. We must be careful the game doesn't go down the route of the round ball game and the portents are increasingly ominous. So for the sake of fairness we should also point out that in those last three minutes Scotland failed to regather the kick off from the Aussies. They threw a wet ball to the tail in torrential rain and missed the jumper and even right at the end when they should have gambled on recovering a short kick around the ten metre line they kicked the ball deep into Australia's 22 thus denying themselves any realistic prospect of reclaiming the ball. There were too many mistakes made for a team looking to close out a game they had their hands on and that wasn't down to Joubert.
By:
ET the Rugby hierarchy would beg to differ and have publicly hung Joubert out, so Scotland should look for some compensation for not being in the semi finals which would have been a huge financial boost to scottish rugby

If you believe the ref got the call wrong though tim, Aus were still going to get the ball 10-15 meteres out from the Scottish line and in the context of the high scoring game that it was and Aus already scoring 5 tries and over 30 points it was highly likely that they would come up with the winning points anyway. So I dont think they'd have a leg to stand on.
