Anybody who follows the sport knows Joubert is all for the southern hemisphere teams but can anybody say they honestly thought he'd have such an impact today? Wonderful heart shown by the Scots and the myth of the reformed Aussie tight five fully exposed. The Argies will be licking their lips and praying they get a ref who understands tight play because they'll break the convict forwards in half if they get a fair rub of the green.

How can you say that nugget? Most people are clear it came off the Aussie forward and so should have been a scrum put in for the Aussies for the Scottish knock on.

agree with LDee, whether it was a penalty or not, the question must be why it was not referred to the tmo. And, as northern as has said, it was clear from the video footage that he had messed up, intentionally or not, so why did the tmo not intervene. they have been doing it for all and sundry throughout the tournament, here we have a decision that will ultimately dictate who wins the game and there is just silence from the booth. bewildering.

Joubert should never referee an international again says Hastings
Former Scotland international Gavin Hastings says referee Craig Joubert running off the field at the end of the Scotland v Australia Rugby World Cup quarter-final after awarding a controversial late penalty is one of the worst things he has seen on a rugby field. Wallabies fly-half Bernard Foley kicked the penalty to win the game 35-34 at Twickenham, and the South African official sprinted off the field after blowing the final whistle. It was that act which angered Hastings and former England scrum-half Matt Dawson. "That is the worst thing I have seen on a rugby field in a very long time. He is not prepared to face up to the players, that is not rugby and that is not the spirit of rugby," Hastings said. "It's disrespectful to the game," Dawson added. "He should be sent home tomorrow, he should be punished and he should not be allowed to make an international rugby commitment again," Hastings added. There was confusion at the time over whether Joubert should have consulted the television match official in awarding the penalty, and it was later clarified that TMO cannot be used to determine if a penalty should or shouldn’t be given, only for offences in build-up to a try, foul play, or scoring of a try. This clip is from 5 live Sport, Sunday 18 October 2015. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p035krs0 |

I am sure that throughout the RWC that the TMO has told the ref whether or not a pass is forward etc.
|
|
By:
perhaps the TMO was at fault or maybe Joubert couldn't hear him.
|
|
By:
Perhaps Joubert had the shiits and that's why he ran off.

so we have a situation where the tmo, who is fully mic'd up to the ref, can clearly see he has made a right royal f**k up, but is not allowed to tell him. ffs ....

The TMO has intervened on several occasions during this world cup to draw a referees attention to various things. Given the stage of the game and the likely ramifications of such a massive and arguably massively wrong call a quiet word to ask if he wanted to see the incident again should have been all it took for sanity to prevail. But as the commentator made the point Joubert is the same ref who allowed McCaw three times to come in from the side late on in 2011 and wouldn't penalise him just in case the southern hemisphere side lost.

Funny people say Joubert favours southern hemi teams and cost Scotland the game whereas I was confident in taking Scotland +15.5 in part because of Joubert (along with Aus schedule and ins-and-outs for both teams) and it was never in doubt.
thanks curious-cat : "TMO cannot be used to determine if a penalty should or shouldn’t be given, only for offences in build-up to a try, foul play, or scoring of a try". |
|
By:
Sadly for Scotland they could have done with that Busybody George in the TMO box(I very much doubt he would have missed the trick to intervene, although with him being Australian you never know)
|
|
By:
We all know what happened in the 2011 final, no excuses for Joubert there but it's surely not his fault that the 4 teams remaining in the competition are all from the southern hemisphere.
|
|
By:
It was definitely not a penalty. What a **** Joubert is. You could tell he was gagging to give Aus a kick for it.

"TMO cannot be used to determine if a penalty should or shouldn’t be given, only for offences in build-up to a try, foul play, or scoring of a try".
Bit of a nonsensical statement. Of course foul play was involved because that is what a penalty is awarded for. |
|
By:
While we're on refs that was a clear red today for arg player and Garces cut the TMO off at 'but'. Neither ref had the socks to call it. Let's be clear - Arg were the better team but get it right ffs

laidlaw asked him to go tmo and he refused. feel for the scots. i got very lucky in this one that penalty saved my bacon
|
|
By:
shouldn't have to ask, and joubert shouldn't have to ask the tmo. the tmo could see it, same as he could see the late shoulder and chose to sit there and say eff all, twice. as someone said earlier all he had to do was to ask joubert if he wanted to have a look.

ref backed an all southern semi finals boy did the Aus get lucky

pathetic dive from Hogg, should of been shown a yellow

Hogg kicked the ball, took two steps after that and was then taken out. If Mitchell had been any later, he would have been charged a late check out fee. |

Dive?
Mitchell ran straight into him watch the clip carefully and you might just see that https://vine.co/v/e9nv1AZXItIHow does slow motion does take away from the fact he took two steps after kicking the ball before being taken out? How many steps do you think should be taken before it is deemed late? 4, 6, 8? |
|
By:
looks worse in slow motion.
what does the tmo do ? speed it up and watch it |

Like making an amazing 3 course meal preparing for 79 mins and then taking a dump all over the food in the last minute... TheBaptist's partner must do this regularly as he's very precise on the timing and the comparison ![]() |

You have now copied and pasted some other rules you have found.
A match organiser may appoint an official known as a Television Match Official (TMO) who uses technological devices to clarify situations relating to; (v) Reviewing situations where match officials believe foul play may have occurred. Joubert thought there was foul play and awarded a penalty but did not consult the TMO. Did you actually watch the game at all? ![]() |

offside isn't foul play

By:
tmo to joubert, it was a late tackle, but i've watched it at 14x the normal speed and it's not that bad ....
|
|
By:
is a forward pass a foul nugget ? how many times a tmo called one of them .....
|
|
By:
Whether Offside is foul play or not is not the point.
Knock on was the point he had to review. Eg. As he previously consulted knock on as foul play to the TMO earlier in that half to sin bin Maitland |
|
By:
correct, because in normal speed it doesn't appear to be late

How many steps would you say before it is considered late? |
|
By:
hard to tell, not all steps are equal. Didn't look late to me.
|

By:
It looked late live, he looked worse in slow motion
|

By:
Mitchell knew he was getting nowhere near the ball and just ran straight into Hogg with his shoulder.
Very cowardly and an obvious yellow. |
|

Hogg was warned earlier in the tournament for diving, against Japan I think. Might of gone against him here.
