A very poor assumption by the look of it. Toulon are more than a little serious about this. It's Montpellier who have the issues.
By:
Oh, except that Simon Shaw is starting for Toulon. Truly baffling.
By:
Godzilla at 5 - does he often play second row?
By:
No often, but I'm pretty sure I've seen him there before once or twice. He's certainly big enough.
By:
Means he won't be contributing as much around the park though and they're already without Ouedraogo in the back row....
Toulon should be winning this if they're one of the genuine favs for the comp. Their first real test |

Some good news for the Irish sides then. Biarritz are going to struggle to get 4 tries in what looks like very poor weather in the south of France, while Montpellier are up against it facing a very strong Toulon outfit.
Leinster and Munster might not need bonus points at all at this rate, although I imagine they will still be going all out to get them. |
By:
Quite so, RM. Do Toulon still carry the French mental block about winning away, or does that fact there is very little French about them mitigate this?
By:
They got smashed by Toulouse away earlier this season, but they picked Kennedy at 7 (he's 6ft 8") and didn't look interested. Otherwise though they just tend to win all games. I think they are 17 wins from 20 so far this season.
Away losses: Toulouse 32-9 Toulon Clermont 24-21 Toulon (I don't think that can be counted as a poor result) And they lost at home to Metro last week, despite apparently attacking for most of the game. |
By:
ok, cheers for that.
Whats the play for Biarritz v Quins as I will be watching and fancy a bet? |
By:
No way that Clermont result can be counted as poor but I'm sure it was in the middle of the autumn internationals and they did not have a full side out, whereas most of Toulon's team have retired from international duty (or should have been playing in Steffan Armitage and Gunther's cases) and they were still almost at their strongest. I think it's going to be a grind and a half for them, and I actually think they have looked a little lacklustre recently (for them) with Johnny at 10. Botha missing has also hit them hard IMO and the unthinkable did happen recently when they lost at home to Racing.

By:
You may have a point there MB, a blip for sure. Still, Montpellier's pockets aren't so deep and when they lose their captain and shift Gorgodze to 5 I think that is a big worry.
Should be a fascinating match, but for the fact that Rolland takes the whistle. In fairness a lot of his games are exciting but not always for the right reasons. |
By:
Ah, that's an unlucky appointment for you, RM
What game will you be watching instead? |
By:
The other option is Cardiff Blues v Sale so I'm just going to have to watch the Montpellier game and keep all heavy objects out of reach.
As for tonight, one of the most intelligent teams around take on one of the thickest, but Biarritz do at least have Yachvilli playing which increases their overall IQ by about 400%. Quins have played some very good games in the rain, particularly beating Northampton (another seriously thick team) recently, but they are not really pulling away in any games which is a worry as they have had chances to do so. It's wet, Biarritz may well just decide that a win is everything and they will have another crack at the Amlin, and wait to see if Leinster and Munster slip up, so it could be a good old fashioned grind. Quins are a good outfit but maybe the motivation isn't quite there. It's a struggle to find anything I like, but Biarritz 1-12 might be the best option. |
By:
ok, interesting, cheers. can't disagree but don't know if I am sufficiently enthused to play.
By:
Look at the state of that pitch? Could be as bad as Biarritz v Connacht and anyone who saw that knows it is amazing that got to 17pts.
By:
under 33.5 with Powers for me
By:
Just back the draw and lay off in single figs at HT. V rare for it to be sub 20 pre match but at certain times it makes sense.
By:
Mike Brown probably key today. Biarritz only know how to hoof the thing into the air, especially with Traille at 12, so Brown's catching will be key. Biarritz have Balshaw, Ngwenya and Brew so my guess is that Quins could win this by punting and winning scrums.

Ah, the world's classiest back 3 RM

how bad could they be here! They can all drop the ball very well in dry conditions.

Not sure it's actually as bad as the Biarritz v Connacht game, but it's certainly very very wet.

Who is he going to w*ank over tonight given no Irish team playing?

By:
Connor O'Shea's coaching?

By:
Big difference though RM is that this is as good as a scratch game with two teams we know can do up the jumpers very well

Are these conditions safe for the players?

big backer at 13.5 - what was he doing just before KO?

Now Mr Lacey, we know from every other ref that you don't have to roll away from collapsed mauls. That is a collapsed maul so it can't be a pen.
By:
Some good catching so far.
By:
Great pick up from Evans there.
By:
Fantastic stuff Evans. People will no doubt be moaning soon about how dull this is, but some great skills shown already.
By:
Damn you Lacey, he picked up and fell into the ruck. You can't put the ball back into a ruck so why is that a pen?
By:
how dumb was that?
By:
When that ball has hands on it it is out. Marler is in the right, although the sad fact is he probably never will get away with it.
By:
Now that was dumb. Even when players time that right they get away with it once in 10 times.
By:
someone tell Lacey the "use it" law ffs.
By:
Even if Marler was right, RM, dumb to even take the risk, always likely to be pinged.
By:
Yes, I agree, but with regret. Hate it when players read it correctly and get penalised.

By:
anyone any thoughts on the offer from paddy power to refund all losing try scorer bets if any forward scores first try in munster v racing & exeter v Leinster games.
racing don't look to have sent the A team over so if you had it mind that Munster must surely score first then you could pretty much back all the backs and only a Zebo try would be a half point loser. obviously a racing try from a back would scupper everything so no doubt an interception try in the first min would occur from what turned out to be racing's only visit to the munster 22 in the whole match ![]() |
