If you know your history, Ireland has never been unified, therefore reunification is a nonsense.

"The UK has requested that it be extended to 30 September 2021. The Commission will now assess this request.
The Commission has already indicated its openness to finding solutions in line with the Protocol. However, for that to happen, the UK must fully implement the Protocol, which is the solution found to protect the Good Friday (Belfast) Agreement, the functioning of the all-island economy, and the integrity of the EU's Single Market. There is no alternative to the Protocol. When looking for solutions, providing stability and predictability for the people of Northern Ireland will be of paramount importance." Q1 2021 UK exports to EU down by £2b
diary products down 90%, Whisky down 32% (although up to US, with removal of Trump's putative tariff war), chocolate down 37%, lamb down 14%. UK exports to Ireland down 70% !! UK GDP was almost 50% higher than Ireland's when both countries joined the EC in 1973. in 2020 Ireland had just over 100% (more than double) per capita income than the UK. ![]() do you think the solution to our widening impoverishment in comparison to our nearest neighbours is to do more, or fewer, exports to our nearest neighbours? I think more. But just my opinion. Could be to export less. Any experts here can help? |
By:
UKs gdp was 50% higher before joining the EU
The mistake was joining the EU in 1873 , that’s why we’ve left . |
By:

By:
That’s of course if you believe the gdp figures as a measure of a citizens wealth
Depends how it’s measured etc |
By:
per capita means just that. per head of population in 2020 the UK income was 40k dollars, Ireland's was over 80k.
in 1973 the numbers were 2k (Ireland) v 3k UK. No wonder the Irish are pro EU. Same for London, which is where England's wealth growth has been concentrated. Domestic failure to fairly distribute the wealth to the regions (non Urban) clearly at play in English angst. Obvs, it should be aimed at Westminster, not Brussels, but there wasn't a referendum on the Westminster system was there? |

The EU is good for some countries , it’s bad for others
It’s good if you are a small country receiving billions of pounds from the EU ( ie Britain ) and don’t have the burden of creating the jobs and mass immigration You’re not a thinker are you bigpop ? What’s good for one country can be bad for another |
By:
* ie billions of pounds from Britain
By:
By the way per capita doesn’t mean just that , it depends how it’s measured
By:
What correlation is there between wealth per capita, and how wealth is distributed?
If you're skint, you're skint regardless of how well your country is doing. And you can be also rich while everyone around you is on the breadline. |
By:
correct, ireland has a very high GDP per capita but I am skint
By:
Bigpop will be telling us China’s gdp next , what a mug
By:
another example would be lfc

By:
you can't make sweeping generalisations based on per capita statistics
By:
correct
By:
you are both correct and incorrect. Per capita income does not mean many people are not skint; indeed, aggressive neo-liberalism has seen wealth inequality and concentration of wealth grow, with the current political side effects. for individuals it's a meaningless figure.
Per capita wealth can still indicate if a country is succeeding within a system however. Ireland are clearly making their current situation work for them (as a country). The UK is clearly going wrong somewhere. Ignoring the question - would increasing exports be a good idea for total national wealth? - doesn't change the answer. Like if you run out of time on an exam: an unanswered question gets you no marks, just like an incorrect answer... |
By:
do you think the solution to our widening impoverishment in comparison to our nearest neighbours is to do more, or fewer, exports to our nearest neighbours? |
By:
You still don’t get it
It depends how it’s measured ( before per capita ) some of the total it may be impossible to distribute And then also it depends how it is distributed There that’s explained it for you |
By:
not a lot is being distributed to me, that's for sure
By:
Ireland eg may have many billions that are tallied up as part of gdp
But it doesn’t and cannot go to Irish citizens |
By:
is this another one of those 'there's no racism everyone is racist' paradoxes?
(it doesn't 'depend on how it is measured' per capita wealth is the measure being referred to). It's a way of allowing for population size when comparing economic success of countries. Accepting - as above - that individuals may or may not share in the overall success (or relative failure). there you go. all explained for you ![]() |
By:
And this fact , in a small country particularly , these large sums that are unavailable , skews Ireland’s gdp figures

do you think the solution to our widening impoverishment in comparison to our nearest neighbours is to do more, or fewer, exports to our nearest neighbours? still not tackling this one?... ![]() |
By:
It depends , you see Germany eg are trading more and more
Have done over the last twenty years , and getting poorer and poorer I could explain why , but it’s complicated You’ve enough to be getting on with so far |
By:
You haven’t understood per capita yet :(
By:
FWIW German GDP in 2020 was more than twice that of 2000, but I don't suppose that will dissuade you of the your idea that Germany is getting 'poorer and poorer' ?

By:
so the collapse in UK exports to our nearest neighbours, could be a positive thing in lfc world.
they should make you the spokesman who takes that message to relevant industries which are being wiped out by gvt policy. 'oh no, it's no bad thing you have nobody to sell your stuff to anymore, you just don't understand how to measure things' ![]() |
