Dj the guy is a total weirdo believe me, the only trainer that ever decides he has to saddle all his horses, any half trained ape can sadlle a horse?, straight away alarm bells are ringing total weirdo?
The only trainer who use to jump in and out of a 4X4 at Newmarket thinking somehow this nutjob was going to a make a difference by going down to the start and tell the very experienced stall staff how to do their job?. When I seen that I lost every bit of respect I had for this guy, I knew there and then we were dealing with a guy full of his own importance not to mention serious metal issues. And when he went down to the Curragh start to tell the Curragh stall handlers how to do their job and insist that he himself will shove George Washington into the stalls rubber stamped for me that we are dealing with a total nutjob?. A good friend of mine who does stall handling at the Curragh said he and many other stall handlers wanted to plant him there and then, go figure? |

Speaking of serious mental conditions....you need help Greaser.

All that you have suggested there just describes his minute attention to detail which is why he is brilliant at what he does.
From a personality point of view,I have never spoken to him but I know someone who deals with him on a regular basis and what you have described couldn't be further from the truth. He is apparently modest, genuine and extremely hard working which would fit in with his upbringing. What is the point in repeating the same opinions thread after thread, you're worse than the Catholic Church and I am definitely not signing up to this cult. |

Silver, I can't understand why you pick on AOB as he shows more humility than a professional should. If we didn't know already how good he was at his job, anyone would think he was negligent from the way he runs himself down in interviews, even beyond the tendancy to blame himself every time a horse of his gets beaten.
You might just regard them as trainers of animals, and I'd have a certain sympathy with your view as their is some evidence to support your argument. But everyone here has heard it before and aren't going to change their minds. Most people here subscribe to the theory of trainers in terms of their betting and in terms of a betting site the whole argument is pretty redundant. I've backed Missunited in the 8:10 at Roscommon, she's solid as a rock and her trainer is a good placer of his horse. I wouldn't regard him as a genius though, none of them are bar maybe Bolger!! |

mental issues ozy? because I don't succumb to the usual sheep like point of view, except everything as fact without ever questioning it?
By:
i never met him but i know a lad went down there one morning on a sorta stable tour.he said exactly as above, unassuming, modest, funny even.he came away very very impressed by what he witnessed.he dont drink.good on him.i drink but i admire anyone who choses not to.if more people dint drink ireland would be a better place.and im not religious.but if he choses to be then good on him..free choice

not a sheep, Greaser, more like a parrot, repeating the same stuff every day.

neil the media and the Aidan outer exterior hides as far as I'm concerned a guy with serious mental issue.
I put up here an interview done by the Irish times about the O'Brien family and everything about it told me this guy needs serious help and Ozy thinks I do? The interviewer asked his children questions and he answered for them, give them some space man, their your children you don't own them, one of these days they'll have their own lives, but if Aidan has his way it will be only in his own image?. |
By:
Dj lets put it this way I think the guy is a total fake, the noddy head and the shy exterior hides a multitude believe me!.
By:
I couldn't give a continental f**k what way he nodds his head, all I know is, he's brilliant at what he does.
By:
all I know his well bred horses are often brilliant with what they do!
Henry Cecil hardly had anything to do with the training of Frankel as he was in the heights of that horrible disease cancer, in and out of hospital, but the horse never lost its ability I wonder why? |
By:
Can you explain how Aidan O'Brien trained 100's of NH winners with mostly rubbish horses before he got the coolmore job and hows trainers cant do what he does?
How has WPM improved plenty of horses he got from other trainers by 3 and 4 stone? Horses who must have ability but there trainers couldnt do much with them. I gave you a list of these some time ago but you went quiet on that thread. Off the top of my head. Thousand Stars, Away we Go, Dorset Square, Vast Comsumption, Call the police, Dare to Doubt, Catleen,Bundle of fun,Immediate Response, Allee Garde,Etc Etc. Dont dodge the questions Silver. Answer them. Good lad |

drugs??

or contaminated feed if you like?

Actually bigwill I think I answered that question before?, how come Tony, Margaret, and Tom can't do the same as Willie when you consider I bet your bottom dollar they all train their horse the same as Paddy thought them to?

Frank Sinatra had a brother that couldn't sing Silver......
![]() |
By:
Funny JR but where not dealing with singing voices here its inherited, a horse trainer never inherited a horses ability.
By:
Being able to lay a brick isn't inherited either but there are good Bricklayers and bad ones....
By:
we're
By:
JR there are good horses and bad ones too?
By:
I'll just say this on the matter.......It's true that if you gathered a group of kids in a playground and told them to run 50 yrds the Athlete among them would finish in front and the kid
with the knobbly knees would be last.....no amount of training will change that...you can't put in what God has left out. However the best trainers will take that Athlete and get the best out of him......train him to his FULL potential........seems simple doesn't it.....just because a trainer does well with a horse does not mean he has trained him to his Full potential........i'll leave you to mull over that for a while. |
By:
Fair enough Jr, but how many trainers out there could do the same job as Aidan is doing?, is Aidan a guy who turns water to wine or just training the best bred horses in training?.
In fact even Aidan trains a load of old muck every year too, even the messiah can't make them run fast and they end up in the sales. That's why the word genius should never even come close to describing a horse trainer who is only getting a talented horse fit anyway, the horse owns the ability?. |
By:
Not sure you've fully grasped the point of my post Silver.
By:
full potential? what is full potential because we'll never really know anyway because horses can't talk?
By:
Ah....Ah that's the tricky bit.....
By:
Nobody said training was easy!!..........except you of course.......

By:
If a trainer surrounds himself with the right people it can be made look that way at least. I'm somewhere in the middle on this one, I have no doubt it isn't as nuanced as some make out, but it isn't easy either.
By:
Yes sometimes I'm been deliberately controversial, as I am with this thread, but all I'm doing is questioning some of the wide held beliefs in racing that can sometimes transfer as myths if you're willing to sit down and question these things?
The bounce factor must be the most idiotic myth ever invented in horse racing folklore? |
By:
not sure what a trainer myth is, scott dixon excellent shrewd trainer, askaud got the double the other day
sir geofferyanother juicy winner for this smart outfit at 12/1. ismail mohammed all his horses seem to win, especially mubtadi ![]() latest trainer that has come to my attention is charlie hills, son of barry hills, looks to have some good horses and knows how to train them, amanda perret what a money spinner she has been at goodwood unbeliveble. cant be just luck and good horses. dispels the myth. trainers who know what they are doing, prove this time and time again with good results. |
By:
looks to have some good horses" probably the operative sentence roadrunner, looks to have a heap of mountain asses doesn't have the same effect?
By:
Aidan O'Brien is a spoofer and a bluffer who has no problem misleading the public. He is a disingenuous character who cannot be taken seriously. He tries to give the impression that he is holier than thou when in fact, he is a master of deceit. If he was to leave Ballydoyle tomorrow do you really think that the whole operation would cave in? He is the most disingenuous trainer in the country. Anyone could do the job he is doing. It is a pity so many people on here cant see the wood from the trees.
By:
Oh but gotchee you're not allowed say these things, let the media hype that turns a pious nutjob into some sort of superhuman.
Is that a really scary sight watching kids about 8 years of age dressed in crombies and wearing dark shades and nobody thought to ask the father? |
By:
Silvergreaser,
I remember the thread about the improvement made by some relatively ordinary handicappers after joining the Willie Mullins stable.I think the average improvement in ratings was in excess of 20 lbs for the horses listed. These are not blue blood Coolmore type thoroughbreds just ordinary NH pedigrees. You might remind us of your explanation for the improvement as I cannot recall you coming up with one. These horses came from a variety of different trainers so it will be interesting to see how your trainer doesn't matter theory can explain it. Ypu might try to stick with the facts in yout answer and not cast aspertions on the trainer by making unfounded sweeping statements mentioning drugs and contaminated feed. Also if possible could you answer the question directly and not go off on tangents involving other family members. |
By:
I think my point is quite clear tolmi, Im sure Willie holds no secrets in his training methods to the likes of Tony, Tom and Margaret they would have all learned the ropes from their late father and inlaw Paddy would they not?.
Lets do a trading places for pig iron and put Tony in charge of Willies string for a season do you think that the results would be that much different when you think that both probably train their horses the exact same way, the same way they were thought from a very young age?. If you can tell me something different that Willie does that Tony or Tom or Margaret for that matter don't do then I'm still all ears? |
By:
Silver Tolmi is right, this is a rehash of a thread from about a year ago,Tony Tom or Margeret haven,t for one the numbers of Willie and two the class of horse, and three owners with deep pockets, actually between them haven,t many horses at all, think this the same reply i gave you then.
By:
They would do alright for a season but it would all fall apart after that. Commitment to d job would be one major factor!!!
It's like saying any clown could manage Man Utd. They could for a while untill decisions had to be made and then d thing would fall apart. By your reckoning Pat Dolan would get as good a result with Utd as Fergie would? Do you believe this to be the case silver? Any manager could manage utd? |
By:
Not the type of analogy I would use bigwill, football is a team sport, players of varying degrees of ability blended together to play for each other, of course some managers are better than others and have different methods of training and can get the best out of an average bunch of players.
Horses are individuals with varying degrees of abilty their is no trainer on earth can make a chronically slow horse win a horse race, when you consider virtually everyone of them just gallop them to get them fit for a horse race and if the horse has ability then all the better even!. Horse feed sorts itself out, and if the horse is showing signs of distress then you call in the vet to sort that out, other than that what exactly does a trainer actually do, maybe try and pick the right race for his average charges or if the horse is very good the races almost pick themselves. |
By:
I'm afraid your point is totally irrelevant silver.
The question I am asking is how WP Mullins a horse trainer improved the horses mentioned by over 20 lbs on average from their form for their previous trainer. If it is all about the horse as you imply then how can one trainer improve a variety of horses from a number of different previous trainers. The other family members of the Mullins family and their training regimes have absolutely zero to do with any of the improvement shown. |
By:
the man utd comparison is relevant silver.apob and wpm are managers as well as trainers.jeez i dunno why im even arguing with you your so far off the wall.you say"anyone could do the job apob or wpm are doing".if you believe that ?..remember a few seasons ago niall quinn took over managing sunderland.not too many eyebrows were raised..former top experienced player he should do ok etc.he was a disaster.he just couldnt do the job properly.do you think if say p rothwell c swan or m hourigan took over at wpms that all would go smoothly?!?..ill leave the reply up to ur self.
By:
I presume if you inherited a horse off a trainer with a poor or average string and poor facilities and he could only afford to pay 2 staff to look after a string of 20 horses and then go to Mullins great facilities and attentive staff I'm sure you could improve a horse a few pounds, but if any trainer starts improving horses by upwards of 20lb then alarm bells should be sounding loudly.
