Sorry, I'm just going to stop you there, Greaser and ask you to blow into this bag, please.
By:
well ozy answer the question, I'd really love to know what these so called super trainers bring to the table to turn horses who are pretty good anyway into world beaters?
By:
I don't know Greaser. Possibly a combination of better facilities, better staff, better gallops, better judgement, more evolved ideas, better scientific knowledge, better technology, more experience, better horses to train alongside, access to better jockeys (btw I don't want to get you started on that topic).
Let's say you were a thoroughbred. Would you want Borneo whispering sweet nothings in your ear every morning, filling your head with nonsense, feeding you cabbage, living in his kitchen and lapping his orchard for exercise or would you want to be under the care of Keen Leader at his salubrious stables? Now the main thing here is, you have already made up your mind on this subject and you won't be swayed, so here isn't much room for debate. You have had a skinful , so the best thing you can do is have a mug of tae and head for the bed. |
By:
when it comes to you and borneo it never really caused me any harm, I never got involved but I ask a question what the hell does the so called trainer really do?
By:
I assume we start from scratch here ?..O.K...We've agreed on that , so far so good eh Silvergreaser ...Now getting into action , the facts are , no matter how well bred a horse is , Nobody and i mean nobody knows anything about his ability till they get him on the gallops..So he does a little lunging trotting etc , then after he's shown that hes well enough and strong enough , they take him and do a few gentle canters , building him up so he'll be able to do a few light canters ..then when the feel hes ready , he'll do a little light gallop , after a couple of weeks of this , he might be ready for a little work , not to much mind , his bones are still very weak , lets say he passes on all points and is deemed ready to do some strong work ...then and only then , will a trainer catch a real glimpse of the horses potential ...he will increase his work load accordingly ..Having established that he is able for it the trainer will have a
organised gallop with horses who may have already won ..Making sure not to over do it ...If the horse proves equal to the task the Trainer knows he has a useful tool on his hands , and will map out a race plan accordingly....hth.... |
By:
fast forward to the complicated stuff, wonky, will ya? You are only adding grist to Greaser's mill with that.
By:
Let him be getting on with that for the minute ...Time for some leonard Cohen....

Ozy maintained Id drink in me, sorry ozy I was minding my granddaughter tonight, who will not for the world of her sleep, so I got out of the bed and went for another cup of coffee and when I looked in she was snoring, this a half hour ago, jesus about time, I wanted to sleep two hours ago and now she has me wide awake?
Workrider I presume most half decent trainers do the same thing?, what makes Aidan the messiah stand out?. the bottom line is he doesn't stand out, he's only as good as his next good horse, and if its a Coolmore bred its hardly going to be too bad now is it? Oh some really good trainers out there are tearing their hair out just to have 10% of what the pious one has?. |
By:
heated stables, nice surrondings, underfloor heating, nice surfaces, little pool work, excellent food, a bit like putting you in a 5star resort greaser,do u think your performance would improve without all the clutter?
By:
not at all in fact if I had all those luxuries mp06 I was would switch off altogether.
By:
delete was.
By:
Silvergreaser.........I suggest you take a trip to a trainer who trains winners and one who does not. You will get your answer fairly lively.
By:
There does be plenty of trainers on the cold list gant, is that because they're clueless considering the only real thing a trainer does is get a horse fit on the gallops or is it his horses are just plain useless even God himself couldn't make them run any faster?
By:
Why do you think Aidan OBrien was head hunted by Coolmore.
Jim Bolger acknowledged him as a hard working genius. Why did the Joe Crowley stable which was small and trained a few winners a year turned into the best stable in Ireland after he arrived. |
By:
Define genius wildman, yeah Aidan won the Derby, the Coronation Cup the Irish 2000 and the Queen Anne but how come he didn't win the English 2000 and 1000, the Irish 1000, the Oaks the Prince of Wales, the Eclipse etc etc is it because his horses were not good enough and the ones that won were?.
By:
Greaser, are u suggesting that if a Traner really was a 'genius' then all his horses would win everything?
By:
I'm suggesting not one horse trainer in the whole wide world should ever be called a genius its the horse that has the ability, you could call a trainer their coach I suppose, coach them to fitness but not in a million years can they make a slow horse go fast.
By:
As for Bolger and Aidan I'd say they were a match made in HEAVEN? forgive the pun, Aidan would be the ideal pupil for Bolgers pious clean living.
Oh how Aidan wears his pioneer badge with pride, the type of people I despise, somehow their pious ways make them feel superior. |
By:
You may hate them because they are not drinkers but you can't deny they are great trainers.
An old saying of mine was " beware men that don't drink such men are dangerous " I used to say it tongue in cheek but we all know people that can't and shouldn't drink. |
By:
One non drinking publican and politician once said the most contented man he ever met was a guy with drink in him, he would say that now wouldnt he considering its his livelihood? but there is an element of truth in that, now I don't mean the guy who falls on the floor gets up and drinks more.

If a few trainers I know stayed off the grog and maybe turned up on work mornings at their yard, they might do a little better. Lads swing the lead when the boss aint around.
Silvergreaser you have your mind made up and if you think by just galloping the horses head off and racing it is the way to do it....fair play to you. Talk to the lads in Newbridge who work in successful yards, they will put you straight. The lads in the bookies probably used to work in such yards. Dedication and attention to detail..........we have owned a few and learned the hard way at the start. |
By:
2 names that prove the theory that the Trainer makes the horse.
1. Henry Cecil: A genius in the 90's, lost his way after his illness and personal issues, when he got his act together in the mid noughties proved to all what a genius he was. 2. Tom Taffee: A gifted trainer who wasted his talent. Got a kick in the hole from his Wife (by his own admission) in the early noughties and trained a Gold Cup winner and a stream of Winners. Reverted to type after and look at him now Rest my case |
By:
Greaser, the genius lies not in getting a Donkey to win the Derby, but rather in achieving critical, small, frctional improvements in already talented animals.
By:
Lustrumm will think I am getting after him for other reasons,I am not but jings Tom Taaffe a gifted trainer an absolute imposter.
By:
Tom Taaffe has super training facilities.
By:
That's all he has,his training of Kicking King was exemplary but when you look at the money that was spent on horses in his care and the lack of success, even now he has some great owners,he has Mrs Haye and have no doubt he will sour them too.
By:
He did a good job for a couple of Cork lads with the very consistent mare Emotional Moment, tend to agree with you Wildman and particulary the last part of your statement regarding "souring"
By:
He wasn,t a mare

By:
You may hate them because they are not drinkers but you can't deny they are great trainers.
Are they really great trainers or are they trainers of great horses? I have to agree with silvergreaser and suggest the latter might be the case. |
By:
I knew a lad who's father had a number of horses with him described pretty much as Wildman and a few others have on here have.
By:
My point is not to focus on him as a good trainer but to focus on him on as a bad trainer which he is. He, to me anyway, is the prime example of the influence a Trainer has on his horses. When Taffee made an effort the results came, when he reverted to being a playboy the results left him.
He is the prime ecxample of that for me |
By:
Well can we word it this way that successful horse trainers are way overrated and their horses underated?
By:
Almost any trainer can train one horse a season, even the Cheltenham festival is littered with ordinary outfits having the wherewithal to produce the goods with their best horse. What seperates Mullins and co from the rest is that they can win many races all through the season, and then be hugely successful on the big days as well in a much bigger scale. Tom Foley,Tom Taafe, are just a few examples of trainers who can get their stable star to perform on the big stage, but it is so much easier to train one a season.
By:
Almost any trainer can train a horse with ability, I still haven't got an answer as to what these so called super trainers bring to the table, apart from training extremely well bred horses?, I'm all ears again?
By:
You may well be all ears silvergreaser, but those ears are firmly shut when somebody says something to you that you don't want to hear. Most trainers get well bred stock because they have done well with poorer quality animals. Aidan O Brien didn't always train blue bloods you know, the reason he got the chance to do so is because he could excel with lesser horses and even horses from a different code. Plenty have got the big opportunities and have failed to deliver as well, look at Michael Dickinson for example.
Your argument is boringly repetitive and completely nonsensical and I don't really know why I am even replying to you, because anybody that knows anything about horseracing will know that the right animal is only part of the jigsaw. |
By:
boring and repetitive? but I still haven't got a definitive answer?
O'Brien copied Martin Pipes training method, run them hard uphill, he didn't exactly revolutionize Irish racing, he was just a copy cat? |
By:
The truth of the matter is as simple as this- Silvergreaser despises Aidan O'Brien because he doesn't drink so he must be a weirdo.
By:
silver your like a broken record.you know a bit about racing but your ideas about apob and wpm are just plain wrong.the reason they are are so succesful is that they are the best.apob proved himself in the nh game with very modest horses and most people would say hes the best flat trainer in the world.as far as bolger weld and oxx are concerned its the same.the cream rises to the top.why is rich ricci using wpm?because hes the best.its not because he thinks hes a nice fella!!
