the modern day heritage is if you have a grand+ to spend on a weekend use it for a short break, spa day etc etc not to use if for 4 hrs surrounded by lager louts and coke heads with a few horses you can hardly see passing by every 40 mins, then fight to gert out of car psrks asnd spend 2 hrs in traffic

Did that Filthy Rag mention Diversity by any chance ?

just mentioning in the past wed look forward for the derby, youd very likely have all the trial winners turn up , so you would more or less know who was running etc , plus usually the gns horses would be there, but now there is no excitmant, with coolmore winning nearly all the trials and right up to last minute you dont know which of their horses are going to turn up, we didnt even know until after the draw which jockey was on what., yes imho coolmore has spoilt the race as well.

wood as most racing journo,s just lying again, its only free if you walk from london, eat, drink, nothing and not spend a penny on any of the attractions on offer, which will lesaver quicke than greg wood, lucky etc if a gatemen asks them to pay
its lucky,s,woods careers, lucky has a young family if he paid his way took them to the biggest meeting evert sat and paid to user whats put on for you it would cost him a grand a day,£52,000 a week and for that he,s missed, 4 days of chelt,2 days of aintree,4 days of RA,fri of derby meeting, maj of newmarkets meetings including a classic,3 days of donny etc etc, even if he went to all those meetings without his family and paid his way ,he,d be north of a £100,000, marketing racing as its not that expensive as long as you dont spend any money when you arrive bercause we no its to expensive, deserves where its heading extinction, its utter madness, all the £ put in to racing lg,sunday series, skeltons £500,000 prize a million in total ,£3.6 mill advertising blitz could all be put in to making the big festivals more affordable |

Derby died a death many years ago. 8 races this year. The morons "in charge" put the 2 group 3s on 1st. Then we have the derby sandwiched between 5 unfathomable handicaps. AGAIN the bookies get their way.
|
|
By:
the racecourse isn't a place for punters these days certainly big ones.
|
|
By:
Presently, horseracing in the UK is geared towards the bookies and corporates. It's not for residents near racecourses, racegoers and punters.
Big wigs, just remember the above when formulating a viable and effective set of radical policies to steer this sport away from the rocks it's presently heading towards; tinkering will not do. |

Without in any way being discriminatory, it may surely have something to do with the demographic change in London and surrounding areas, which is the major catchment area for the track. Increased immigration has changed the cultural outlook of the country but London more than any other part. Many new arrivals advocate a religion which abhors gambling. Many others will not have been inculcated with the Derby as being a "big day". There are lots and lots of competing interests for those that have been here generations, but new arrivals will never have heard of the Derby and no amount of advertising is likely to persuade them to come. We may simply have to adapt to the new reality and stop complaining about it. As a member of Epsom It is not built for big crowds and Oaks Day ahs frequently been unpleasant in recent years. That said, the prices for kids quoted are scandalous.

good points. someone be along in a minute branding you a racist though.

Some really good points there Donegal regarding oaks day I’ve not been for the last two years but do plan to go next year for me it starting going down hill since the year ascot was closed and Epsom took it on themselves to have royal ascot ladies day at Epsom

it was the boys from the city who kept it going in the 80,s/90,s whetre nevo came from,i,m sure the city is still virtually the same demographic it was in 80/90.s, theyve just found different things to do with their money.spending 2 grand and putting your name on a 6 month waiting list for a meal at THE FAT DUCK wasnt around in 80/90,s, as knott said las week windsor far closer than epsom is missding the same city people on its mon nights, at a grand a pop for a family of 4,it has sweet F A to do with different demographics, nevo would rather sit his arris in a tv studio,if you cant get nevo to a derby thenanyone else is way down the target list, like i said 70% of pundits/racing MSM would be going if they were paying their own right of passage

how many 1000,s of muslims work in racing, sheik MO is a little clue even for a weapons grade idiot like you
|
|
By:
I'll only try this once........the difference 1sttp is that none of those events you mention have, as their primary attraction, the enticement to gamble. You can enjoy all of them without having a bet and the vast majority of those who attend do precisely that. Horse racing is different.

"Wanabees" will pay that to be seen at Ascot.
Families will not pay the extortinate Epsom fees and attendance will continue to decline elisjohn |
|
By:
I think the only way to get the Big Derby days back is to go back to Wednesdays and for Epsom to do everything they can to encourage the double decker buses and the crowds back (including taking less profit). It may be too late now, because it a lot easier to lose the "Big Event" status than to recover it, but it the only way.

Reducing the cost may help a little, but the fact is that horse racing is not popular any more.
Greyhound racing is dead and horse racing is heading the same way. It maybe something to do with animal welfare, many other activities people would rather spend their money doing or people thinking it is overpriced for what they get. We just have to face the fact it will never be like it was. |

man in the street's worked out if he has £5 at 20/1 at the track he gets £105 back.
if he stays at home, and doesn't pay £40 to get in, he gets 38.0x his money on here |

There are some that still have to go to the course to get a bet on. Brighton's well known gambler owns Small Fry which won on Derby Day. Simon Nott reported a 5k bet on this horse at 5/2 which won by 2.5 lengths at 9/4 The previous race at Chester it also won and some people I know won bundles. A horse to follow at present IMO Incidentally years ago same owner flew up to Scotland with some mates hoping to have a decent bet on Stakis Casino Boy trained By Brian Ellison speaking to the late Freddie Williams he said he take whole bet he must have regretted it when it duly won 6/4 fav |
