Got to go back to wednesday, whats to lose?,its dyingkeeping it as it is.
By:
ticket prices are extortionate now & most working class people either can't afford it now or refuse to have the rise taken out of them
By:
hexham 12 pound on the door for this evening
20 is plenty for epsom family enclosure imo |
By:
I think clashing with the Andorra game was bad planning. cheers.
By:
who,s idea was it to hsave bck to back 5 f sprints ,followed by back to back 1 m 4 f races
By:
yes, England v Andorra, the whole world will be watching. The Derby isn't what it was, but then nor is London.
By:
I did think about going. The prices were extortionate, I felt. Why would one pay the high prices if one could stand for free on the other side of the road towards and opposite Tattenham Corner, and still get a good view of the race?
The racing programme does not warrant the extortionate prices either. |

Taxi rank …

Pay to stand in a smelly crowd, and barely see anything of the race - sure.....
By:
"smelly crowd"? The Epsom Racecourse is located in a well-heeled and salubrious area. Most of the residents there go to The Derby just to watch the races. Most do not pay to enter the enclosure; a picnic on the lawn with neighbours or friends just to enjoy the occasion. A few may have a flutter.
Most locals loathe the present Derby. It's an obstruction and an inconvenience to their weekend. Some will even ensure they are away; interest is minimal. |
By:
Nothing to do with prices, where were the 10s of thousands who normally watch on the hill ? Was it just down to the weather ?

All crowds at sports events are smelly imposs

R Ascot £99 a ticket, £125 bottle of Veuve, trains packed like Calcutta, no brainer sit at home
By:
It's not a no brainer though is it. Some people like to leave their house occasionally and go and make some memories.
By:
Look at the demographics of London and their presence at the races and other sporting events. Ethnic minorities have little interest in the historical pastimes of the UK.
By:
It is for me, being going since I was 15, happy to sit and drink good Champagne, eat good food, no packed carsey or bars
By:
Each to their own.. more of an age thing by the sounds of it.
Hope you back some winners. |

Well mate ive got my Oyster free pass now

I still go Vegas and Ibiza every year though!!

They are not! Most would have walked from their homes nearby just for the fun of it. And, none (very, very few) would pay to get in either. And, those that live nearby live there for the affluence of the area, good schools and easy commute into London for work.
Epsom is not Cheltenham, and the tag "festival" attached is a misnomer; no large Irish contingent to support it; no local hotels or b&b either. |
By:
Ok, I'll let you have that pleasure if you wish, it's a no-ta from me.

It's finnish I tell ya

historical past times of england
derby been dying on its arse for 40 yrs,it moved it from a wed because it was dying, its more a age thing than a cultural thing , uk so called culture struggling to find places who,ll put up with their culture, costa,s, canaries, cyprus, ibiza had enough and in papers today THE ALGARVE also had enough of the uk drunken louts, sorry culture |
By:
The locals really do not like The Derby weekend. It's hugely disruptive for non-horsey local residents; a day at work no longer a panacea.
Commercialisation has taken away the fun and the spirit of The Derby. |
By:
Was it just down to the weather ?
tadah |
By:
was the derby really dying on a wednesday ?, ERHAABS win still memorable , the derby really is dying now ,
By:
The Jockey Club needs to get the locals onside. Ask any of the locals if they'd suggest their friends elsewhere in the UK to visit on a Derby weekend?
By:
Moved to Saturdays coz Tv wanted it moved also to try and increase betting turnover.Reason why there is five h'caps on today is to milk World pool turnover, fck joe public and tradition, bookies and racecourse shareholders have their profit margin to protect.
By:
yes, i mean having racing there for about 400 years you'd think the locals might have got used to it by now
By:
I imagine the denizens of Kensington & Chelsea are not overjoyed by the presence of 40 thousand or so oiks turning up on their doorstep 20 odd times a season.
Pretty sure they would prefer the Epsom racecourse as their neighbour. |
By:
I think probably the most obvious answer is we are in the middle of a a massive recession. People are not stupid and can see that the cost of living is going to continue to get much worse and have stopped spending. From what im seeing the economy has fallen off a cliff no matter what the official figures say.
By:
You may be a bit right but the Hill is free and the crowd was sparse.

The " locals " onside or offside havent got a flying Pheck to do with low attendances. |
