Free Solo, 1pt EW @ 12-1, 7.00 Dundalk (4 PLACES)

I'm going take a chance on Free Solo, who wasn't in much form when last seen and has dropped to a mark 11lb below what he won off in a 61-84 contest over the 7f trip here last January. His loss of form after occurred when his yard were struggling for winners most of last year, however, it seemed before the Christmas break that they might have turned a corner with a couple of winners here.

Free Solo's latest 3lb drop in the ratings allows him into this 0-65 contest, for which he is the top-rated with a mark of 64, and in theory this is a bit weaker than the average 0-65 round here as it is confined to horses which did not finish in the first three on their latest start.

He is an 8YO now so it could be he's just regressive regardless of stable form, but a 70-day break isn't a huge concern as he has run well fresh in the past, and as a dual winner at a mile, the trip round here shouldn't be an issue. So if he can rediscover some form like a couple of his stablemates did last month then he 's on a mark that should see him competitive at this level.

Hey Geeorge,

Great thread - I see one of your previous selections EVA ROSIE is running again at Newcastle tonight and is currently around 11/2

Do you think she is worth a pop?

The Dragon, the market seemingly much prefers Making A Move, who ran in the same race last week and also looked unlucky not to go close to winning.

Hugh Taylor was asked on twitter this morning why he hadn't picked Mr Heinz again, now the blinkers were back on and Hugh's reply was:

yeah, I thought this was a lot more open than most classified races with at least 5 or 6 you could make a case for.

But to answer your question, the drift is a concern, but she would appear to be a frame contender at least, so couldn't put you off.

Cheers stewarts, Foyles and Virgin.

Apparently the partner of the winning trainer used to work at Ballydoyle, and they're clearly doing something right to be operating at a 14% strike rate in Ireland, with two well backed winners on the card tonight.

Arlington, 1pt EW @ 14-1, 2.35 Newcastle

Arlington seemed to appreciate the step up to 6f when winning twice here last year but he's still of a little interest over 5f given he evidently runs this course well and is back into 0-50 classified company. He finished last of 12 when last seen here over 6f in November, but he did show some early dash and was returning from a 90-day break, so given he doesn't have any great record fresh it isn't a great concern that he didn't see his race out, though admittedly it is a bit off a worry that he's now returning from another 50 days off.

He's drawn the one stall but it didn't look a bad thing to be centre to far side last night so hopefully his track position won't be a hinderance and he can give a good account if more forward fitness-wise this time.

Fast Flow, 1pt EW @ 12-1, 3.52 Chelmsford

I going to give another chance to Fast Flo who I selected earlier this week when I wrote:

Fast Flo is a 44-rated, 28-race maiden who has been tried at trips ranging from six to twelve furlongs, but her latest start over 6f at Lingfield when finishing third in reapplied blinkers, which was the first time she had tried a sprint trip on the all-weather since qualifying for a mark, suggested that there may be a win in her at a basement level. She was sent off at 66-1 that day but there didn't seem any fluke about it in what was a well-run contest and the quickest of the two divisions (the other division was won by Havana Sky who's won three times since), and her effort might have wanted marking up considering she helped force the pace and was in front well over 2f out before being headed around a furlong out but only lost second place close home; the fourth has won since.

Her overall profile doesn't instill confidence, she would be better off in a handicap rather than this classified stakes, and it's a concern that she's very weak in the betting having been absent for nearly seven weeks, but I'm going to take a chance on her because for all she would appear thoroughly exposed and limited in ability, this will be just her second attempt in an all-weather sprint at a realistic level.

Fast Flo didn't run too badly to finish 5th and hopefully is sharper for that outing. She has a tricky draw to overcome, particularly as an inexperienced Irish apprentice takes his first ride in this country, but it's also an interesting jockey booking as Shay Wallace has won a couple of times on Dundalk specialist San Andreas, and comes to Chelmsford for this one ride after riding there last night.

Crocus Time, 1pt EW @ 20-1, 4.27 Chelmsford

Crocus Time was a selection on last year's thread on the back of having run well at Kempton in September when finishing second in a 6f contest that worked out well, and although she was no match for the winner Liosa, he subsequently won off an 8lb higher mark, and the third home, Havana Sky, who admittedly seemed to go off too quickly in front, has won five times since. The fourth and fifth have also won subsequently.

The concern is that Crocus Time hasn't been in much form in three starts since, though her next run is excusable on account of heavy ground, and two poor efforts back on the AW have come on Tapeta following a two-month break.

So while there's clearly a question mark over her current form, hopefully it's been a case of needing those latest two runs, and she returns to Polytrack now eligible for this 0-50 classified, with blinkers tried and having drawn the inside stall.

Thanks guys, a bit of second-itis at that was the third selection on the trot to finish second, not that I'm complaining as it's still infinitely preferable to them dropping out the back of the telly.

The Horsewatchers' acquisition there, Dash Gordon, backed as though defeat was out of the question on his debut for Mick Appleby. He did the thread a favour last year when winning over C/D, when I thought the one draw would help as there'd been a massive issue him with hanging left, and it looked there as though he was wanting to lug that way again. He looked and ran well so no doubt losses only lent for those shrewdies.

Cheers all.

Sadly the run of seconds comes to an end with a loser, and that made for frustrating viewing because Crocus Time ended up getting squeezed out at a crucial point. The good run at Kempton, she found for pressure having sat close to a strong gallop, so I wish he'd just let stride on instead of taking back for a lead. Oh well, such is life...

Fast Flo was sent off at 16-1 in the reformed market.

Think it was actually yesterday chav, two 16-1 (Industry SP) seconds from 3 selections.

To be honest though, a no selection day is a bit of a result for the thread.

A winnerless January is starting to look a distinct possibility.

As you going over a year, I think it can be fairly described as long distance not a sprint. Far far too early to talk of car crashes. Good selections yesterday suggest a win is not too far away.

Thank you Brian for the positive comments.

The plan is for a year-long thread but if the minus figure was to get out of hand then I may have to do either a runner, or do what a well known tipster once did when things weren't going well and reset the P/L to 0.

Kempton on Wednesday, Cobs.

I see on Wednesday, Dash Gordon has an entry at Southwell in another classified stakes. I wonder if he was acquired  with an eye on the lucrative bonus for the most AW wins?

Could be George. Martin Dixon was very complimentary about Dash Gordon on will hill radio last week and put him up as one to follow.
