He hasn't listened to me' - angry Patrick Mullins has words with cousin Danny after incident at second-last fence
Gaelic Warrior: foot-perfect display in Limerick Grade 1

Patrick Mullins vented his frustration at cousin Danny after the pair finished first and second in the Grade 1 Guinness Faugheen Novice Chase at Limerick on Thursday.

Patrick won the race comfortably aboard 4-7 favourite Gaelic Warrior but was unimpressed with his cousin for exploring a run up the inside approaching the second-last fence aboard Gaelic Warrior's Willie Mullins-trained stablemate Il Etait Temps.

Pulling up after finishing five and a half lengths clear, Patrick repeatedly pointed towards Danny as he came upsides him on Il Etait Temps, with some angry words appearing to be directed in Danny's direction.

After the race, Patrick explained the situation going down to the second-last on Racing TV. The leading amateur rider said: "I tried to drop my lad, get him back a bit and get a breather into him. I told Danny going out that there will be a gap down my inside at the second-last, do not come for it. He hasn't listened to me. Luckily he hasn't got the two of us beat, but it didn't matter."

Watching the altercation from Leopardstown, Willie Mullins could see the funny side and told Racing TV: "To me Gaelic Warrior put in some exhibition of jumping and if anyone wants to see what a steeplechaser looks like go and replay that race, I thought it was fantastic and then my son and and my nephew trying to kill one another going around to the second-last fence.

"I don't know what Patrick said to Danny but I'd imagine they wouldn't be coming home in the same car, anyhow. I suppose Danny was riding his horse and had to try to go for Grade 1 glory. Anyhow, it will make fun for this evening when we're disseminating the whole thing."

The stewards at Limerick inquired into both the approach to the second-last and the altercation after the winning post, referring the second of those incidents on to the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board.

"Anyhow, it will make fun for this evening when we're disseminating the whole thing."

I presume he means dissecting, but if Willie does intend to disseminate the whole conversation to the world tonight, I'm all for it.

If that's how he speaks to his cousin (and well known jockey) in public immediately after winning a Grade 1, in what manner does he speak to the staff in private when things aren't going so well?

I told Danny going out that there will be a gap down my inside at the second-last, do not come for it.

why is patrick giving riding instructions to other jockeys riding horses in different ownerships ??

is this what goes on in a typical irish horserace ?  jockey on the fav dishes out instructions to the rest on the way down to the start ??

i'm going to come wide into the straight, make sure you're on my outside .... wtf ??

If they would be kind enough to inform the betting public on these instructions pre race that would be great...WTF!!!

Hulk, you seem to be forgetting they are stable mates , do you think when Chemical or any other British trainer has more than one in a race they don't discuss tactics , how childish of you  to think they don't....

As the assistant trainer, no problem with him giving instructions if he's the trainer's representative on course, but, ordering another jockey not to be on a certain part of the track at a crucial stage of the race, well, is that team tactics or that he shouldn't be compromising the favourite's chance?

And here's the point, you've got the BHA looking to do something about the Mullins / Elliott domination in races, and as punters, all we can ask for is that when their runners are dominating races, everything is seen to be running on its merits, yet here we have the boss's son telling another of the stable's jockeys, to keep out of his way at crucial stage of a race.

George , he was telling him he would be moving out approaching the second last , but was then cutting back in , most jockeys move out a little at that fence ,in fact he was helping him so they both wouldn't be tipped up, a safety net most would call it..Danny didn't listen ..

Danny quite rightly said fk you i'll do my best to try and win the race.  which is presumably what anyone that backed it would require him to do.  not to go where the jockey on his biggest rival is telling him to go.

Any other opinions posted should consider your track knowledge & experience of many visits to the racecourse workrider , also anyone watching the re-run be sure to watch the magnificent display by a quality winner as well as any petty incident that may or may not have happened at the second last fence.

Good luck tomorrow all   Happy

Let's forget for a second about who the jockeys and horses are, and put it another way...

You had the jockey on the favourite ordering the jockey on the second favourite, where not to be on the track when they jump the second last.

I could be wrong but I'm not sure the rules of racing permit this!

He is actually telling him what HE is going to do at the second last and by telling him he is preventing the accident that nearly HAPPENED happening, he is not telling him that he can't come up on his OUTSIDE and go and win the race ...

This is what makes having a bet in a race with multiple Mullins entries pointless.
In a graded race you would hope they would run on merit.
This seasons John Durkan was another example that even in a grade 1 they do not run on merit.
