Wow Primos laughed at the 2 bumper horses and the previous winner who finished second. Indeevar Blue was very novicey at the first 2 but no excuse for Florida Dream apart from a mistake at the first hurdle in the straight which comes up very quickly. Hombre de Guerra might go close in the second division.

Considering the time constraints very pleased with that summary which covered most things. It was very much a bookmakers day.
Spot on about the two shorties in the first at Ayr. Both woeful. Primoz does have a high head carriage, but also a high cruising speed. No doubt they would have been very pleased with Wild Side Of Life. Jumped and travelled, just beaten by a speedier type. He looks a staying chaser, but should be winning a staying novice in the meantime. Letthedustsettle also ran well to a point, but the stable are badly out of form. He should also be up to winning. Jango Baie pulled very hard, and did well to get back up. Tellherthename jumped well, but looks much more of a staying type. He will almost certainly go up in trip. It paid to be on the front end in the bumper. Electric Mason pulled hard, and did well to finish his race off. Given that he had looked a stayer Oak Grove was given an idiotic ride. At times it looks as if O'Brien and Skelton don't have a tactical brain cell between them. |
By:
Let me look again at your post that said Primoz would win....no I don't see it. Oh, I see after the race when its won the high head carriage isn't a problem.

What is the matter with you?
Just because you got something wrong you have to come on and play the sarcastic child. I didn't say Primoz would win, and don't claim to have done. If you want to play your usual silly buggers don't pollute this thread with it. |
By:
Fair enough you did give the negs on the 2 shorties but you wasn't keen on Primoz either. I got my fingers burnt on the Richards beast. But good call not to play today although your EW poke ran well.

These days Carlisle seems to regularly throw up some eyecatching performances. Unfortunately, not all go on to fulfill that impression.
Three notable one's today with Trelawne, and more appropriately for this thread, Johnnywho and Mister Meggit. Johnnywho barely came off the bridle again. I would have liked O'Neill to have sent him on two out, and try and teach him a bit more. Instead he held on, and ended up bungling the last, but that merely reduced the winning margin. Tougher battles lie ahead, but he remains an exciting prospect. Having missed a year he hasn't got time for too many egg and spoon races. Mister Meggit appeared to freewheel away like another smart one. Where's he been up to now? Am I imagining that there was talk of 6yo's being excluded from the Festival Bumper? Googling it I couldn't find anything to support that idea. I would imagine that decent Ascot winners bumper might be a useful stepping stone. He doesn't have a great pedigree, and I normally associate Shantou's with needing time and distance. They probably weren't a great lot in behind. Surprised at the support for Denemethy. He made all to win his point, but you just knew O'Brien would take no notice of that run style. He actually pulled his way into contention, but hadn't got anything like the pace to trouble the winner. Over at Cork Dee Capo continued his progression in the opener, and Abi's Champ completely outjumped Banprionsa in the mares novice. Letsbeclearaboutit was the star of the show in the novice chase. I would have had a dabble for the Festival had he not registered nearly all his wins on right handed tracks. As an 8yo he is also playing catch-up. |

Two very interesting cards at Warwick and Fairyhouse tomorrow. Despite not running, An Tobar was a big talking horse last season, and he is due to make his rules debut tomorrow. Can he make up for the lost time?
Will have a closer look later. |
By:
DD what did you make of the O'Neill novice that won at Hereford? Thought the last two jumps were it's best.
By:
I think it was an awful race, and his jumping for the first 2/3 was ropey at best. He did eventually improve, but I doubt he will make much more than a decent handicapper.
Over at Plumpton Goodtimecrew looked one to avoid. Awkward in the race she eventually had every chance, but didn't seem too keen on going past the leader. An Tobar was put in 11/8, but is now odds on. He won his point by 20 lengths, and the eight to finish have all subsequently won points, or under rules. Problem is that was getting on for two years ago which makes this a watch race only. Later on the card there is an interesting match-up between Joyeux Machin and Absolute Notions with neither appearing to want heavy ground. I have had a couple of small each-way bets in the two novices at Warwick, one with an extra place, the other without. The first division looks much the stronger. Jingko Blue was in training with Henderson last year having won his only point. The second actually sold for considerably more, and is now with Elliott. I have taken a chance with Chatshow TV. He was sold for 150,000 having stayed on nicely behind Brook Bay. Several behind have won since. The market will no doubt tell the tale of what is expected. Not keen on Bowen, but sometimes you have to bite the bullet. Personal Ambition looked like winning his point twice over, but eventually stopped to a virtual walk on the run in. No doubt Woods would like to reverse what happened with De Boinville on Saturday, and this is more his sort of price. No surprise that Kintail is short in the second division, but not sure his form has a great deal of substance to it. I have taken a chance on stable switcher, Mount Ferns, who is actually a half brother to Henderson's City Chief. I was just taking a look at Blagthebookies form. Can the handicapper just refuse to give a handicap mark? Of course this is far from being the only example from this yard. Ballymackie jumped soundly in winning a couple of points, but will he have enough pace to see off a Festival winner in a decent novice chase? He has been nibbled. |

Tarras Wood is my main fancy in the Warwick maidens.

An Tobar was all over the shop in the market, but I would have thought that connections would be happy with that performance. He jumped nimbly for a big horse, and never looked like getting beat. The Festival is a long way off, but he looked more like a candidate for a staying option, rather than a Supreme.
Iroko was impressive at Warwick. They seemed to go a fair pace, and he was never in trouble. A strong stayer, I would have thought the Brown Advisory would show him in the best light. Worry is the jock. The outside rides he gets are virtually all for McManus. Much more difficult for him in a bigger field Grade 1. Ballymackie was another one all other the shop in the market - 6/1 last night goes off 28/1. Jumped very well, but presumably, woefully unfit. Covered the principles in opening novice. Woods does seem to make a habit of beating shorties. Chatshow TV did well to finish third. He was eventually weak in the market, and his track position was considerably worse than all his market rivals. Kintail got home in the second division, but wasn't impressive in doing so. Mount Ferns looks a chaser, but bungled his way around, and stopped to nothing. Either a problem, or seriously unfit. |

Races at Warwick and Chepstow don't look particularly strong, certainly not as good as today.
I have taken the extra places with Inion Tiogair in the shorter maiden. She ran better than her final placing suggests on hurdling debut. This is tougher, but hopefully, her jock can conserve a little more petrol this time. Anytrixwilldo was an eyecatcher in a much better race, but at 3/1 is plenty short enough. Captain Wallace would be my idea of the winner of the longer version. He would have won last time, but for pecking after the last. Unusual one for Thomas as he doesn't have many ex-pointers, or in fact irish breds. If the price gets bigger than 4/1 I will probably back it, but shorter, and it's a leave alone. It seems Hobbs doesn't have the owners that can afford to buy point winners these days. Clearly bought a few placed horses last season. I See The Sea was on my list, but he looks plenty short enough given he looked a stayer, and is up against two Nicholls' runners, and one for Sam Thomas. At best I would have it fourth favourite. I also worry that Hobbs thinks Nolan is a better option than Jones. The Warwick novice looks a poor race. Helnwein is clearly the one to beat, but I don't like the King tactics so happy to let him win. Will cover the bumper later. Waiting on a drift before placing a bet. |
By:
Interesting DD, your thoughts on Iroko.
Thought the intermediate looked perfect for him. There will be a few Irish to beat obviously. Gaelic Warrior for one. |
By:
Iroko is now a slightly shorter price for the longer race at the Festival so the balance of opinion is probably pointing in that direction. That's where you would imagine Gaelic Warrior would be heading as well.
All his intermediate wins have suggested that further wouldn't be an issue. That said I have just looked back at the Aintree race, and he was a tad disappointing. He was prominent throughout (as were all the placed horses), and jumped well, but in the end he could only plug on at one pace. You couldn't say he didn't stay, but he was well beaten. |
By:
Experience shows us it is impossible to guess where a Mullins novice will end up, but I can see him going down the Galopin Des Champs route with Gaelic Warrior.
Time will tell. |
By:
Little nibbles for Ionian Tiogair having drifted to 50/1 in the standard place market. The price on Captain Wallace has also contracted, and sadly, all the 4's has disappeared. I See The Sea has lengthed slightly. Helnwein appears very strong at Warwick. In the closing bumper Baby Shally won a modest point, but travelled well, and looked a class above. Burke an interesting jockey booking, but no great confidence in the market, and ground might be an issue. Of the newcomers I am interested in the two from the Newland stable, primarily because he is not noted for this type of horse. Is it a change of emphasis? I have rarely backed anything from the stable, but appreciate they are usually fit and ready to go. Will that policy translate into national hunt stores? Both horses have decent pedigrees, but I have weighed in with the extra places on The Dream Goes On, who I assume is the first string. The dam had plenty of form on testing ground.

By:
Probably a blessing that Ionion Tiogair couldn't make the running this time. She has finished her race off better, and should be up to winning a mare's novice. Party Vibes another solid effort for the Daly yard. Captain Wallace was well backed, but jumped poorly, and ran a shocker. The ground shouldn't really have been that much of an issue. I thought the bumper winner in the last was the better of the two bumper winners on the day. I See The Sea did look very one paced, but I think he is worth another chance in staying novice hurdles. At Warwick I think Helnwein owed his win to the mediocrity of the opposition. He wasn't impressive at all. Skelton bumper winner bolted up, something that happens a few times every season. Happy just to watch. I don't think it was much of a race. That said Baby Shally should be up to winning a race on better ground, and I wouldn't give up on The Dream Goes On. Hard to accuse the jock of getting too busy on this one, and likely she raced on the worst ground. It shouldn't matter, but I am always less confident when a stable has already chalked up a winner.
More exciting racing tomorrow with several potential stars on view. You would have thought Henderson would be wanting to make a good start for his new owner. It looks like he has landed Willmount in a pretty ordinary heat, but that said at the moment the horse is very much more hype than substance. I have taken an extra place on Onewayortother in the hope the ground isn't too soft. The novices handicap chase looks an excellent race of its type. Break My Soul looks to have more on her plate than the earlier hotpot, but who knows what version of Seeyouinmydreams will turn up? The initial version will be hard to beat. She was one of the better one's, but not keen on the sire at all. Equinus may be improved for a trip, but he looks very short price for a ropey jumper, upped in class. The first bumper looks the much weaker of the two divisions. Presumably, Derham has at some time talked up Pure Carbon for it to be so short. I am waiting on a drift on an outsider to get involved. The second division is headed up by the big money purchase, Histrionic. The form has yet to be boosted, and at the moment he looks expensive enough. It's a real staying family so you would imagine they will make plenty of use of that stamina. Ryan's Rocket has been off for a year, but the form has received a couple of boosts. Into The Park got a typical O'Connor ride on debut, but would only have been third had he stood up. I have gone with the extra places on Express Surprise. He chased home a subsequent expensive purchase having started a well backed favourite. Over at Ludlow there is quite a competitive looking mares' race, but I have stuck to today's formula, and taken the extra places on Grace Harris' The Midwife. That's the standout race, the bumper looks a moderate affair. |

No bet in the first Newbury bumper. It was going to be Tommie Gun, but having been a general 18/1 last night he is now just 12/1. One horse has come out, but that should only have made a 10% difference. He has a very good pedigree, but ran badly on debut under a poor ride from today's rider. Seems unlikely that he will be allowed to drift back out. Equinus is now an even more crazy price, possibly the best backed horse of the day.
By:
Yes crazy price
By:
Quote a few interesting types in the second division of the bumper - looks like an informative race.
By:
It was 5/2 for a very short time last night, and I thought that was plenty short enough. If the jumping improves it might bolt up, but it can do it at that price. Changed my mind on Tommie Gun, mainly on the basis I would be kicking myself if it did step up. Still continues to be smashed up. Clearly Twister supporters out in force today.
By:
It's getting very frustrating with these big price each-ways, three out of four landed again today. You really need to cop the lot, at least once in a while.
The Newbury card opened with an easy win for Brentford Hope. Looks like Newbury, and I think Alice Stevens suits. I would like to see her keep the ride. Willmount duly bolted up. Hard to know how good he is until he steps up in class. Onewayortother shaped like the second best horse in the race. Assuming he brushes up his jumping he can find a race on quicker ground. I doubt he would have been placed later in the day. Unless Jonjo messes up in the meantime you could see Inch House returning for next season's Coral Gold Cup. Manimole landed a pillar to post win for Twister. She's had plenty of goes, and hard to believe she has suddenly found a mass of improvement. Break My Soul was disappointing, and Seeyouinmydreams was woeful. Cobden would have been just as well to let her go forward again. At some stage it is hard to believe they won't be forced into doing that. Equinous jumped better today, but didn't come close to justifying the short odds. Is Young Butler now a reformed character? On a poor day for Nicholls a frivolous objection followed in the next race. Disappointing that the weather reduced the bummpers to what looked like a couple of slogs. Nailor gave Tommie Gun another terrible ride, starting off wide, switching inside, and then switching out wide again. You would almost think he didn't know what he was doing. Fortunately, the horse dragged him into second. Then of course he goes on to win the last race. You would have thought that a slog might have suited the favourite in the last so no obvious excuses. He probably isn't a bumper type. Express Surprise was a massive drifter (12/1-50/1), but having been ridden wide, he came to hold every chance before being unable to sustain his effort. A promising start. Horses usually target Ludlow for better ground. It certainly wasn't that today. I should have cashed out the bet on The Midwife. She doesn't want that ground, and was never competitive. Lilting Verse was given a nice stalking ride, but the race pretty much fell apart. Choccabloc and The Doyen Chief remain progressive. Just notice that Twister has also sneaked the bumper, making it a double of the not so obvious kind. Supremely West landed an egg and spoon race at Sedgefield. The horse has talent, but he needs to improve considerably in the jumping department to figure at a higher level. The jock doesn't inspire confidence, and interesting to see if he retains the ride. A couple of very tame checkouts at Clonmel (Theatre Native and Foreverwalking) where Allaho got the job done, although both the front two didn't appear to be going anywhere fast at the end. |
By:
Nice summary, DD.
Allaho had a nice jog round. Did anyone hear comments from Mullins after the race? Will they be tempted with a trip to Kempton at Christmas? Or will it be softly, softly till March? |
By:
Yes enjoyable reading d d
Absolutely right about hitting the crossbar so often without one going in on the plus side of that at least your selections are running well ,nothing worse for the confidence and belief your reading things right when everything is beaten a long way. Regarding Allaho I don’t know if you have been to clonmel but it’s a surprisingly very stiff finish when the ground is bad and after a long lay off I thought he was good although obviously little depth in the race. |
By:
I just got the impression that had there been a horse finishing off today it might have been quite tough for Allaho to respond. As it was the second never really looked like threatening.
As for hitting the crossbar the biggest frustration is that 20/1+ can easily turn into 5/1 or less next time they run. You would almost like them to show a bit less, and maybe get 10/1 next time. When you are picking in races with not a lot to go on you are going to have to accept that some will just bomb. Hopefully, not too many. |
By:
I never got the impression that the riders of the horses behind Allaho were interested in challenging him. Not saying the result would have been different but the form means zero.
By:
A bit like his 2 Ryanair wins then.
By:
I just mean that anyone who thinks that the second and third were beaten by as far as the result suggests might take it literally when reading the formbook. The third was allowed to school round from the off.
By:
Those who tried to chase after him in his two grade one festival wins looked just the same.
By:
Not to mention when he dismantled Al boom photo and clan des obieux in similar fashion at punchestown.
By:
surely that is not the point? The other jockeys are supposed to make at least a token effort to chase him.
By:
Don’t want to derail the point of this thread sageform have a good day

Fair point jimnast. Good day to you as well and good luck if you play tomorrow. Back to the topic, Insurrection the best novice prospect in GB today.

A few more exposed horses today.
Not exactly going swimmingly for Nicholls at the moment, particularly as there is nothing wrong with the rides Cobden is giving them. Wrappedupinmay just looked clumsy and slow. Stay Away Fay did well to rally, but to my eyes was the least imposing horse in the race, and he may well struggle for pace on a quicker surface. I like the look of The Changing Man, but so often he flatters to deceive. Powell isn't the best, and I would be inclined to give someone else a go. Until he stopped on the run in Make Me A Believer had looked like a potential Welsh National type in the last race. It was Elliott day at Down Royal again, with three or four potential smart horses on show. Brighterdaysahead has plenty of talent, but she will need to sharpen up her act as she rises in class. That said she is probably the best we have seen in this division so far. Solid performance from Irish Point seeing off a useful rival from the front. Found A Fifty appeared to quicken up smartly from the front. Had they left the fences in he would probably have won even easier. Did consider taking the 20/1 for the Turners, but would like to see him do it again, preferably left handed. Firefox beat not very much in the last on ground he probably didn't relish. Just on the subject of irish racing I don't know what has happened to Blackmore/De Bromhead over the last year. She could do point and fire like all the better irish jocks. Now as a punter you just don't know what to expect. Too often she is stuck out wide, and off the pace. |
By:
I think the 3rd horse in insurrections race is pretty decent yet was well beaten today baring in mind quite a few Nichols horses have disappointed recently he may well be above average.
I was disappointed with colonel mustard in the beginners chase at down royal he had already had experience over fences and as already indicated he would have been beaten even further if all the fences were jumped. Regarding rb she has consistently had a strike rate in the mid teens the last 5 years this year so far surprisingly she is at 17%. |
By:
Be interesting to see Irish points next run baring in mind his very good 2nd in last seasons royal bond and his impressive win at aintree ,other than at the drf he hasn’t done anything wrong ,what will be his best trip ?
By:
As he has been found out at Grade 1 level over the minimum I would imagine they will crack on over the intermediate trip and see what happens.
Not too much on the novice/bumper front tomorrow. I expected Flash In The Park to go off favourite for the opener at Aintree. 365 made a horlicks of the race, but unfortunately, I was too late to take advantage of the 5/1. I would hope he could run this lot into the ground. The worry for me is Woods on a potentially decent horse. Minella Double has looked a slow boat under rules. The other interesting race is the match up between Ile Atlantique and No Time To Wait at Gowran. I am looking forward to No Time To Wait who takes the eye, but I suspect conditions tomorrow will be all in favour of the favourite. Elsewhere I have opposed Nicholls in a couple of races which will probably be his cue to start banging in the winners. Pressure on Mulqueen tomorrow. He wouldn't want to be falling off Giovinco again. Stable also run De Legislator who looked a strong stayer over hurdles. Will he find Kelso as sharp as Corach Rambler? |
By:
Might as well go for the hattons grace 23 days break and no superstars around at that trip.
By:
The opening novice hurdle at aintree tomorrow historically isn’t a good one however this years race looks very strong £350,000 was paid for Ben paulings horse winner last November of an Irish point ,most probably decent but he will need to be as the opposition is good ,for me the most interesting race on the card.
Student day tomorrow so hopefully not to rowdy |

Market all over the favourite at the moment.
He was good at Warwick where (other than the last) he jumped well, and absolutely bombed clear from the last. He probably didn't beat a lot, but that looked a massive step on his bumper form. It might be that he will actually try and run these into the ground. The softer ground tomorrow might not suit quite so well. Flash In The Park stalked and went clear from two out in his point. Those behind look moderate, but he looks the part, and did win by 20 lengths. I would surprised if it is anything but a match-up. |
