Agree on Farnoge. Jumped really well and he has a likable attitude. He looks an out and out galloper though so Newton Abbot probably not the ideal course for him. But on the plus side it's a good course to introduce one over both hurdles and fences. I quite liked the performance of the winner of the bumper on the card too.

Looks like there's plenty of exciting Novice's penciled in for races this week and not just at Cheltenham.

I'll watch the replays later and take a look at that one you've mentioned, Drum.

It looked an Ok race for Sedgefield standards. Surely Southern Babylon wins a race when she's stepped up in trip. I thought the winner jumped well bar the last. Incidentally that one finished 4th on his second start behind a horse that's on my HTF list for this season. Captain Butler should have a really good season Novice Hurdling. Yes, unlike many in the Racing Media,  my HTF list doesn't contain Constitution Hill & El Fabiolo Devil

Apologies for giving it a sex change.

Big Fish is one I will be taking a look at tomorrow at Exeter. Should have won on debut, and was subsequently disappointing on second start. Looks the part, and hopefully, won't be given one of those 'experience' runs out the back. Put in at 10/1 it will be disappointing if he doesn't at least make the three.

Big Fish already halved in price.

Just reading the Willie Mullins piece on Sporting Life. Confirms the about turn with Gaelic Warrior, but no mention of what he had previously said. Must have slipped his mind. No mention of Old Ground so it could be a double whammy. JASMIN DE VAUX has been purchased from the Crawford's.

Support for Big Fish well and truly dried up. Complete reversal from last night as he is the only one of the market leaders on the drift. Had the support continued (with the non runner) he would now be 7/2 instead of a drifting 13/2. Interesting to see if the drift is reflected in the ride he is given.

Not having a bet but I'm interested to see how Westerninthepark runs/jumps in this race. GL with yours DD.

quite interested in American Land and King of the Lake at Exeter. Both have hurdles experience and the Tizzard stable is just starting to run some nice horses while Jeremy Scott is usually strong at Exeter. Favour or Fortune is the obvious one at Hereford but odds on first time over hurdles is not for me.

Favour And Fortune is the obvious one, but again the King novices invariably concede a track advantage. He looked classy on his first two starts, but I thought his finish in the Festival Bumper was pretty tame.

Looked useful and jumped fine. I said below (oct 20) that Alan King was about to run some good novices.

Favour And Fortune may as well have been 1/10 as he was in a different league. Second favourite immediately negated any experience advantage by tracking the favourite, and jumping poorly throughout. Need to see what the winner has got against better opposition.

Both of my choices in the 3.30 ran well so able to lay them off but Big Fish beat them from 2 out. King of the Lake stuck on well ahead of Westerninthepark but American Land weakened quickly in the straight. Those four plus the favourite who was still going well when running out could be OK.

Kings horse pulled muscles in the festival bumper.

He thinks his bumper horse in the last is listed class, wins if 90% fit imo.

That novice hurdle was quite refreshing, a bit like an Irish novice hurdle. The front five in the betting were the first five in the race, no farting about at the back. If only that was a sign of things to come. Big Fish jumped nicely, and was much the best of those that completed. He looked pretty straightforward, and I suspect the favourite would have been hard pressed to beat him.

Is that Hereford bumper winner a sign of things to come? Greatrex averaging just 15 winners over the last five years. There was a time when it was case of point and fire teaming up with Sheehan in bumpers. Maybe he has realised he needs to start winning a few again?

DD apologies for off topic but a small wager is a must on No.5 4.45 at Newmarket today...

I suspect it owes a little more to Linda Ronstadt and the Stone Poneys than it does to me. That said I have tipped it in the competition.  No alternative really, but no money down. Likely it will want better ground, and will do well to finish in the first five, but occasionally miracles do happen.

Blasphemy to mention it, but I have been putting in quite a bit of Breeders Cup study. Normally would have left it until the entry stage which is today.

Ludlow has 2 divisions of a 2 mile novice tomorrow and the 2.55 looks more interesting. Choccabloc has won a bumper and is from a Henderson yard getting a few winners, Ittack Blue has already had 3 runs over hurdles, Adjuvant is another convert from the flat with a 104 rating but stays with Michael Bell, Getaway Glory is from the Greenall yard in great form, Recoup is another good flat horse from France and Breccia was modest on the flat but ran OK over hurdles at Exeter. I might take a chance on Adjuvant depending on the price.

Bit late to the party (as usual) but spent long, long hours in the past following the exploits of winning/some placed Irish pointers graduating to the track. My records stretched over 7-8 years and tracked all subsequent runs on the racecourse. Overall, a very dispiriting waste of time and the market was rarely behind the curve.

Some lessons I did learn (and that takes diligent study) included following the runners of smaller National Hunt trainers - normally regarded as "chasing" yards that used the points as a gentle introduction to racing (usually non-winning pointers) but that was mostly in Irish NH racing. Another angle that offered some glimmer of hope was following winning pointers in their first starts in handicap chases. A micro system was well-known breeders with promising winning pointers using the opportunity to give sons and daughters winning chances in Irish bumpers before selling on. Firmly believe to have any chance of beating the market is to undertake your own detailed research into areas others will not be bothered or unwilling to engage.

Nice thread dd, btw.

Good work, Drum. I'm glad you didn't let the price drifting back out put you off. I was at Exeter yesterday and I thought Big Fish looked a real chasing type. So for him to show enough speed in his NH Flat race and over hurdles bodes well for his future. His best 2 runs have now been at Exeter. So maybe going Right Handed might be important to him? To early to say for sure though. The fav jinking out to the left and unseating PB when in the process of laying down a serious challenge made his job a little easier, but it was still a very nice start over hurdles for BF.

You may not have caught the interview with Bellamy afterwards. He said the Lavelle were 'wrong' last season. I can believe that, but it doesn't excuse the negative way they were generally ridden. Better signs in that respect recently, and I will continue to monitor to see if that trend continues over the next few days.

No miracle for the namesake. I did think he looked the part from the paddock shots, but the race couldn't have been much worse with the jock making no effort soon after halfway. Not sure what you would say to the owner breeder after a run like that. It looks pointless. Fingers crossed that  middle distances and much better ground will bring about a drastic improvement next year.

Missed that interview. They've certainly started the season really well. Maybe doing things training wise, a little differently this season too?

Horses are generally seeking good ground at Ludlow so it will be interesting to see how much rain they get, and whether the fields hold up. The Mares' Novice looks competitive, probably too competitive for a bet. It says everything about Christian Williams that Caught a Vibe was only beaten a diminishing head by Von Hallers yet one is 7/1, and the other 100/1. I think Star Of Hoiho has just about the pick of the point form, but neither the sire, or jockey booking would give me confidence. Victoria Milano worth keeping an eye on at a big price.

Picked the wrong first time hurdler. Good ride by Paddy Brennan coming from a fair way back on an ex Fabre horse with plenty of flat experience. Jour D'Evasion is one to note. Getaway Glory the only one of my mentions to run poorly.

Just a short summary.

I was originally going to follow the Daly yard, and that was nice start with Wyknot. I am not big on times, but this was quite a bit quicker than the second division. She should go close under a penalty, and continue to progress. Unfortunately, not so good with Supreme Gift. Not sure if Daly is going to use Jacob as a replacement for O'Brien, but that was a poor start. He seemed to conjure 4/5 mistakes out of what looked a reasonable jumper. Big credit to Victoria Milano in the Mares' Novice. She lined up prominent, but lost that position jumping deliberately, and out to the left. Star Of Hoiho was given a typically negative ride by Skelton, and was very disappointing.

At Carlisle sad to Giovinco get a soft unseat. Race was up for grabs at the time. If similar happens again hard to believe there won't be a heap of pressure on Mulqueen. Mellificent looked a fortunate winner of a very poor novice. The second appeared to throw it away.

Cheltenham looks very tricky tomorrow.

My main focus will just be watching Encanto Bruno. He was very good from the front over an inadequate trip on hurdling debut, but didn't back that up next time, and has since been switched from O'Connell to Cromwell. Cromwell had a horse switched from O'Neill bolt up recently, but this is a different kettle of fish. They need to get the horse back on track. He doesn't want soft ground, and he might have been better served going in the poorly contested three mile novice on Saturday.

On the subject of McConnell it looks like the wheels have all of a sudden come off with his stable star, Seddon, not looking the same horse as last year.

Baby Sage disappeared behind some trees that obscure the first hurdle at Ludlow and emerged without  a rider! Agreed about Wyenot which I did back purely on the Sumner family colours that have been involved in jumping since the days of Capt. Forster and carried by Dublin Flyer and many other good horses.
I can't get very excited by the Cheltenham novices tomorrow but Isaac des Obeaux has a lot to live up to (brother of Clan) in the 2.45 with Tag Man looking a very useful opponent. Act of Authority could be the answer in a tricky 2 mile novice at 3.55.

Encanto Bruno couldn't have been more impressive in winning on the bridle. His jumping was very good, and on that evidence no reason to go up in trip. On this ground he is pretty good, and in the hope of getting similar in March, the 33/1 for the Ballymore is perfectly reasonable. That's two impressive wins on the track when the ground has been in his favour.

Both Encanto Bruno & Lookaway put up the best displays by Novice Hurdlers on a UK racecourse so far this season(Captain Teague down to 3rd place on my own opinion based ratings but probably not officially?)

McConnell has the short price favourite in the 3 miler tomorrow but he wouldn't want to give Butch and Lisnamult Lad too much rope out in front. At the prices, I'd be inclined to take him on with them.

Does anyone consider Antrim Coast a good thing?
By:
differentdrum
When: 27 Oct 23 23:27
I haven't backed anything over jumps tomorrow.

I am assuming the ground will dry back to good.

Butch is the one that has won over the trip. The second has won since, but probably improved for dropping back in trip, and better ground. His jumping wasn't terrible, but I thought Butch was wanting to go right throughout. He also has a pounding action which suggests he will be the one most inconvenienced by drying ground. I am never too keen on flat breds over jumps, but Reverend Hubert appeared tapped for toe last time, and the longer trip should suit with the better ground a likely plus as well. Antrim Coast won nicely last time in a race run at a decent pace. He cleared away late on, but may have been a little flattered as the second was quite free in the early stages. The well touted third runs earlier in the day. Antrim's Coast's pedigree wouldn't suggest it is a gimme that he will be better over an extra half mile. Lisnamult Lad hasn't beaten very much, and there is a possibility he might be more speed over stamina. The other two look as if they are running for the bookmakers.

If forced I would side with Reverend Hubert, but a definite no bet.

Nice one Barstool!

Drum, I couldn't have RH at any price and I thought AC was plenty short enough at Evens, which is proved to be the case. I had 1 point each on Butch and Lismault Lad, missed the 5/1 & 13/2 and had to settle for 9/2 & 11/2.
Butch is a tough dependable sort and can win more races this season. I'd like to see Lisnamult Lad dropped back in trip and he can win more races.

Interesting race coming up in a few minutes at Aintree.
