Ukraine has always been ready to go off. Ever since independence in 91. Half the country, mostly the east, looked toward Moscow, the other half looked west.
Its the poorest country in europe by a country mile. Basically owing to the fact that after the Maidan revolution in 2014 the Ukranian army decided to bomb the donbass. Which is 40% ethnic russian, 90% speak russian and the Donbass regional administration didnt recognise the Maidan government. Its been in a state of civil war since.

This whole business reeks of Biden dropping hints to the Ukranians about NATO membership. Only when Putin called the bluff no one wants to know. Its pitiful.
