If they shut it down now you’d not have any racing live for a couple of months minimum and could run into the first 2 classics on the flat. Get it on TV only and limit entry to trainers and owners. Football the same, play to empty stadiums, clubs don’t rely on gate money these days anyway.

Tell that to Accrington Stanley! football does exist outside of the EPL

Iman Cleric in Iran - telling people to still visit the holy shrine in Qom - Qom being the EPICENTRE of the outbreak in Iran ... as it is their religious duty - and the holy shrine is a ... "place of healing." CryHappy

I'm sure the 2,500 odd AS get for each home game is precious to them, anyway the writing is on the wall.

Lets put this into perspective. there is only 1 case contracted in the uk. There may well be more but until that happens I can't believe the reaction.

i think the govn meet monday, you can expect a series of immediate knee jerks by tues latest, followed by a series of pishing in the wind measures in an attempt to look effective

one case or many, it's not going to stop us having an outbreak and the govn will make decisions that will impact everyone not just those that catch corona

We all know there's an overreaction but the point is that we are living in an age of hysteria ffs, a former footballer dies from dementia and hey presto kids can no longer head a footballCrazyCrazy the newspapers and news channels are reporting it like it's the black death out there, this all pressurizes the government into making gestures as a token to the worried masses and sporting events are easy targets and horse racing joe public already hates is an even easier target.

When: 29 Feb 20 09:27
the reaction seems over the top, so yes the age we live in perhaps

but therein lies the reason why they will take "preventative" steps this week and I am fairly sure they will include a request initially for sporting venues to consider behind closed doors or cancellation, followed by a blanket ban once things escalate

No dozens of former footballers are getting dementia at 3 times the rate of non footballers. So hardly hysteria.  As far as this infection is concerned as soon as the cases hit the thousands in the uk, large gatherings will be banned.

add in ...any business that serves the public or any business that employs over 50 people , gets better by the day

they won't have a fecking chance and millions of lives are going to be at the very least disrupted but some absolutely ruined and those folk won't even contract corona

the next scare when they've finished butchering this one is a recession, I actually think in the long run if this is going to wreckthe economy it would be more beneficial to let corona rip through the uk but we all keep going than we shut down and wreck the county for the next 10 years devastating millions of lives rather than a few thousand

Phase one is to try to contain it ie contain outbreaks.  When/if that fails there isn't much point in banning things.  It's going to be up to the individual to protect themselves, but there will still be a lot of disruption from people who get it having to stay off work etc and severe cases in hospital, so there will be a bit of a recession no matter what if containment fails - all just imo.

totally agree dave, the containment for me is just a face saving exercise followed by no one has been able to stop it, so let it hit us and carry on regardless is for me the longer term better plan

"Lets  not forget Flu kills thousands every day"

Let's not forget this has only just broke out and it has a higher mortality rate than common flu at the moment. As long as they find a vaccine in the next few months it should be ok but if not there will be tens of thousands of deaths at least

any decision on a general approach to tackling coronavirus will be made by people who do not have the intellectual capacity to make the decision and/or who are concerned only about ensuring that their bum is still on a seat in 5 years time. That said, and as pointed out by many contributors, the media are even more clueless. They see it is their job to suggest the world may be coming to an end. An utterly useless bunch of hacks starting with most of the TV producers.

100% correct

(1) politicians are generally drawn from the soft sciences / law / economics and hence do not have the intellectual capacity to do anything useful

(2) I would not be at all surprised that the media stories are paid for by the big traders

FORGET CORONA ,at this time of year there,d be millions in uk feeling rough, have colds etc etc,in the present climate you,d expect plenty of these to phone dr,s, 111, etc, how many of these are been contacted and treated with the vaccine for normal flu if they test negative for corona

giving a vaccine after you have flu would be a bit pointless, it's a preventative injection that doesn't guarantee to stop flu anyway
