Influenza can lead to thousands of deaths a year, with the University of Oxford stating that in 2008-2009, there were 13,000 deaths in the UK alone related to the flu

Yet 3 people catch cornavirus in a day and its headlines.

So we are ok to run a festival with the potential spread of flu that can cause teens of thoushands of deaths

yet we have around 18 people with coronavirus and every major sporting event schools and the economy ready for closing down

Pretty sure it will go ahead..only 11 days away. So glad it starts a few days earlier this year. Just hope there are no new cases in the Cheltenham area in the next week. I'm flying long haul on the Sunday after Cheltenham and it wouldn't stop me from travelling. Olympics are in trouble though.

you would need to assume events with high amount of international flight to attend would be at very least at risk

chief medic already mentioned mass gatherings along with schools

Panic on the streets of London
Panic on the streets of Birmingham
I wonder to myself
Could life ever be sane again?
The leeds side-streets that you slip down
I wonder to myself
Hopes may rise on the grasmere
But honey pie, you're not safe here
So you run down
To the safety of the town
But there's panic on the streets of Carlisle
Dublin, Dundee, Humberside
I wonder to myself

your on holiday you've already booked transport and hotel no refunds ,so although racing would be cancelled plenty will still travel to chelt and have a break so whats the point
By:
hello :-)
When: 28 Feb 20 12:35
you got 11 days to go till chelt

how many more new cases in between is the deciding factor , i doubt it would take many to tip country into some form of shutdown

added to that a rise in incidences in other countries esp in euro zone would rapidly increase measures

effecting international travel , food imports , mass gatherings etc etc

already a panic meeting called for Monday by boris , i would expect odd of chelt taking place to drift

YOU are panicking...  with your posts.

Monday is a Cobra meeting - something of a pre-planned strategy in such, and other, circumstances.

WHERE has it been referred to as a - "panic meeting" .... Other than by yourself.

I realise to many racing enthusiasts the festival is a very important event but I never thought the government would call a cobra meeting about it.

yes onlooker a little panicked here , relatives currently travelling Europe and family spread over UK so be pretty hard not to feel a little worried

i stand corrected on cobra meeting , its classed as a "emergency" meeting but i think under current circumstances with hourly cases appearing the two classifications are not that far apart tbh

Switzerland has imposed a ban on public events that gather more than 1,000 people together in the same place until at least March 15 in response to the coronavirus threat.

The ban comes into force with immediate effect in the midst of the carnival season which draws thousands of revellers to many Swiss towns and cities. It also affects sports events across the country and has prompted the organisers of the international motor show in Genevaexternal link and the Baselworldexternal link watch fair to cancel their gatherings this year.
