Ascot 2.40 - Sky Pirate A 6 year old Midnight Legend gelding trained by Jonjo O’Neill at Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. Dam was a 3 race winner (from 7) albeit minor races. 3 offspring with a winning strike rate of 4/36. Winner of a P2P, a novice and a handicap hurdle, the latter two over 20f and 23f. Concentrating on his chasing career, a maiden in 6 chases, 5 of them handicaps. His handicap mark has only fluctuated between 131 and 134. Runs off 132 today (same as LTO). Not the most fluent of jumpers and fallen twice, including LTO. His best form appears to be over a longer trip, but steps back to 21.5f and is up in class (2). Raced over CD (hurdles) once but was well beaten. Both wins and most of his placings have come on decent ground, although good/soft may not be a significant negative (soft is an unknown) A small field of 7 runners (after Kayf Blanco was withdrawn earlier) and with exception of the top weight, the runners are only separated by 8 lb and all in the 6-8 year age group. A very open handicap. Lay Sky Pirate @ 2.92 (ref my post at 13.24). Good luck all. |

Well done Andrew with lays for Big meadow and Sky Pirate.
I joined in today so Happy Friday all round. Was tempted to go Ascot tomorrow but have a few other plans and actually may go to the jump meeting at Kempton on Monday if weather is fine. Hope you have a successful day with Altior paying the exes |

Feel for you Andrew, I really do.
![]() I thought Enable was a shock but Altior, being backed from 8/13 to 1/3, was certainly on a par. Pointless dissecting the race afterwards it won’t alter the result but the Official Handicapper was obviously right. I didn't bet on the race and hope you get your losses back soon. That’s racing. Move on like I did after the Arc. |

Good afternoon Guys and Girls.
Back home (late last night) after my trip to Ascot for the 'duel' that never really materialised. As Happysandwich mentioned, dissecting the race doesn't change the result of course and all Altiors backers (including myself) move on. Contrary to what Nicky mentioned post race that Altior may not have been as fit as Cyrname, i though he looked well in the paddock. For my money he didn't stay the trip in the soft ground and was simply beaten by a better horse on the day. At 3 out he wasn't travelling as well as i expected and jumping 2 out i thought he was probably going to get beaten, even allowing for that usual burst on the run in he's famed for. If it's soft at Kempton on Boxing day, i can't see him running there. I did shake hands with Henrietta Knight (book signing, but i didn't buy it) and Wayne Hutchinson who i spoke with, he was all over Altior, as was his side kick (didn't recognise him) adding substance to the notion that jockeys are poor tipsters. Considering the race was hyped up, i thought the crowd was disappointing although i haven't seen any attendance figures. That may have been in part to the weather that could have been better. I thought the 1/3 SP was crazy, he was never a good thing anyway. The result added even more of a dampener, but as i alway say, when you place a bet, it's a loser until it wins. At least Sunday was less costly, buying Xmas food produce i can't get over here or Sweden, and i did get to have a full English breakfast so it wasn't all bad. Good luck and have a nice Monday all. ![]() |

as someone who watched the race on my phone in katmandu (difficult) i felt the winner was much the sharper at his fences..altior seemed to spend too much time in the air which was surprising for a two mile champion and thats what was the difference on saturday.
definitely wouldnt be backing altior for the KG and they must be so glad they didnt go to haydock. certainly wouldnt put anyone off backing saturday's winner in said race but must be a huge shot for the gold cup |

Good afternoon Guys and Girls,
The lay selection today is Taunton 1.45 - Easyrun De Vassy @ 2.66 A short reasoning post up later (time constraints). Many thanks to Bitbybit, Happysandwich and PHS for the current lay odds. Contrary to comments above I have not jumped over to Puntersmate and for reasons I pointed out last year, although i don’t have any grievances against the site or persons using it. I accept this thread is called a daily lay, but it started in April 2018 and in those days it was, but not now due to work commitments and I was pre-occupied in UK last weekend. I continued to use this thread this time around by mistake (i meant to use the last one, random daily lay) but from December 7th I will start a new thread anyway and have much more free time whilst my daughter is here for Christmas and NY vacation. Access to a new BF account is already in place (via a VPN) albeit only at home (laptop) at the moment. I can’t access from my office PC, but will be looking to use a chrome-book, and maybe still using my BF helpers. Isleham, I agree about some of his jumping (winner jumped well) and I wouldn’t be backing Altior for the KG, i don’t think he will run there anyway. The longer trip and soft going made it a very hard race for him, he was exhausted at the end (Nico dismounted) and only his class got him close to the winner. |

Taunton 1.45 - Easyrun De Vassy A 5 year old Muhtathir gelding trained by Paul Nichols at Ditcheat in Somerset. French bred dam was once raced on the flat (last of 8). Total of 4 offspring, 3 of them running in France. Lightly raced, winner of 2 P2P races (from 3) over 24f in 2018. Only 3 races since (maiden/novice hurdles) 2 of then in 2018, the other last month. Finished 5th of 15 on NH debut (class 5 - 19.5f) at Chepstow (beaten over 19L) but not many got into the race. Weakened 2 out, never getting involved. His next run was over a more suitable trip (class 4 - 23.5f) in a small field of 9 at the same course. Only 6 finished and he was basically tailed off finishing 44.5L behind the winner. Had wind surgery thereafter (December 2018). His run LTO didn’t show any real improvement, although it was almost certainly an inadequate trip. Finished 6th of 14 (class 4 -17f) at Exeter. Apart from three other runners (who all finished in front of him) the race lacked any real depth, with several priced in triple digit odds including the 5th home who finished almost 3L ahead of him. His 3 runs have been on galloping tracks, so will the sharp turns of Taunton suit. 10 runners and a very open handicap. Of course being lightly raced he will improve, but his debut handicap rating of 109 puts him close to many of these, and several are similarly lightly raced with improvement to come. Has been well backed this morning, but maybe much of this is down to trainer/jockey combination who have a good record at Taunton. Lay Easyrun De Vassy @ 2.66 Good luck all. |
