were both horses taken to the course? if so then it wouldnt have shown up and if not scanned again, looks like its purely down to the trainer then.

The whole episode should end with licences being torn up. Mistakes like this just don't happen. It is an absolute disgrace that the punters carry the burden of this type of nonsense. Racing has reached another low. I doubt anything would surprise me anymore.

Tony McGlone stipendiary steward at Yarmouth, said: “I've not come across this before. As with all horses they were taken across to the stables and scanned and then were allocated a box each.

"Mr [Charlie] McBride was over at the weighing room and was slightly delayed and the stable girl had taken the horse out of the stables and into the saddling boxes. As he was in a rush, he put the saddle on, the horse ran and won.”

“We then sent the horse for routine testing as normal and the veterinary officer scanned the horse and found it to be the incorrect horse. We've inquired into the matter and it's possibly a genuine mistake.

“We've referred it to the BHA for further consideration. I think they've got 14 days to lodge an appeal to the winner. The system does work but like all things it's not fail safe.

Asked whether the horse will be disqualified, McGlone said: "I'd imagine so but I can't say that categorically."

It least it is good to know that if you plan to run a ringer and it wins, connections will get paid out.

Wonder what the bookmakers would have been saying if the winner was backed from 10/1 to Even money and won ??

The system does work but like all things it's not fail safe.

i think everyone would say it doesnt and if it is reliant on a stable girl picking the right horse and a trainer who cant spot the difference, even though he saddled it, i for one would suggest it isnt an isolated incident.

Mr Ivory, i can see how it happens and an easy mistake to make if busy, wont happen again though, system is pretty fail safe.

In the US all runners are scanned as they enter the parade ring. What is the point of scanning them before then?

If they were scanned as they enter the paddock then this could never happen!

I really worry about the IQ levels of those that police our sport.

By:

When: 27 Jul 17 16:57
It would be relatively easy to scan the placed horses in the unsaddling area before the weigh in is announced. If it was my decision, that is what would happen in future but under the current rules, they can't change the result after the weigh in and it is up to bookmakers to decide how to proceed.

This " weighed in " business on this occasion  is a misnomer, can you weigh in really if the horse never actually weighed out in the first place.
