I was sitting at my computer on day and the cat jumped up on to the computer and walked across the keyboards and had 200 on Frankie to win the last at newmarket,he took a price of 8.5 ,but the sad news is that the horse was last but the cat took the loss well after he recovered from a hard boot up the arse.Laugh

Chalkie.
Happened to me about 8 years ago(nearly a grand).
Went to bed,and in the morning someone had backed
some foreign big odds on football team, that got beat.

Betfair security investigated, and new it was not my bet,
as i do not bet football,or odds on.

They blamed my lack of security on my computer, and would
not recompense me.

Hi Trim,
I fear that is the Bollocks i will get from them unfortunately. But i have scoured my Computer and all Security(more than just the basic stuff) is good and appears not to have been attacked.I still believe it is their end and someone knows all about it. Still heard nish apart from reply to yesterdays update request which yielded a 'I can assure you that the Security Dept is looking into it' after laughing their bollocks off and throwing paper airplanes across the office at each other.
If they don't refund my money i think it makes them just as bad as the Shirt Front(s) who are responsible and just as complicit.
I don't know if there are other options available if they do not sort out rightfully.

chalkie you are a victim of fraud if everything you say is correct, like you say Betfair don't give a sh!t and are probably compiling their 'we have investigated your complaint and have found diddleysquat at our end so please p!ss off and forget about the whole thing' email to you. So complain to IBAS, complain to Trading Standards and most of all complain to the Police ... it is a crime after all and they do have to take any accusation seriously and they are getting their ar$es into gear regarding cyber crime.

I agree with Vidou about mentioning it to the police.

Betfair obviously know it wasn't you who placed the bet. But I wonder if they think you had some underhand role in it?

Good luck. I think it will be a disgrace if you don't get reimbursed.

The more you look at this, the more you think that only someone within or with access to the Paddy Power/Betfair Sportsbook could be responsible.

I don't know whether there was some sort of glitch, whereby a lot of different log-ins got temporarily diverted to your account, and one of them happened to belong to a really heavy loser who was allowed whatever he liked on the Sportsbook; or whether someone was testing the water for a plan to get huge bets automatically accepted on restricted accounts.

But everything points to an inside job, accidental or deliberate.

If you're telling the truth about your bets being restricted to £0.00 on the Sportsbook like most of us (or close to £0.00), then your account should provide evidence that some internal fraud or blunder was going on here.

God knows who you take your case to though.
By:

When: 22 Apr 17 08:01
screaming I was just about to post something similar - inside job, they have access and also the knowledge to bypass Sportsbook limits, we all know they would never have accepted the bet under normal circumstances, plus it may not be an isolated incident. Looks like one for Plod
By:
s.kenbo
When: 22 Apr 17 08:07
IF it was an inside job, then it would be a pretty good scam if they could get £3k of somebody else's money on a 4/5 shot, and then get the winnings out without the account holder knowing (and any trace of the bet ever taking place). Obviously a losing bet fooks this up.
By:

By:

When: 22 Apr 17 08:16
S.kenbo: You wouldn't choose a 4/5 shot for that sort of plan though. You'd be looking at a 1/5 or 1/50 certainty.

Or at least I would. Scammers can be greedy (or stupid).

This could sound the death knell for Betfair. How can anyone retain a balance with any confidence if the security system is open to such abuse? I have now installed the two step authentication, hoping it may increase the security level massively. It is as easy to install and use as I was advised earlier on in this thread. I also would ask Betfair to speed up the withdrawal facility. Get rid of this "reversal" nonsense! If I want to withdraw funds, I expect Betfair to respect my wishes immediately! Not leave it there just in case I change my mind. Being able to withdraw and deposit at end of trading, without delay , would certainly reduce the risk of someone infesting our accounts!

The overwhelmingly likely explanation is that OP has had his username and password exposed, so that his hardly an abuse of the security system, in fact the system has worked exactly as intended.

Thanks for all the encouragement lads and live in hope.
Dave I am not the most techno minded but with security on a computer nowadays, how would someone be able to get my BF password etc.Without some form of record showing on the system security
No one and i mean absolutely no one(physically anyway) has been told or seen my login details for any of my betting accounts and if I had been 'Hacked' there is more in other accounts than was in BF as well as the non betting accounts bank etc
I totally agree with most that Sportsbook will not accept a £3k bet anyway so someone inside or other must have facilitated it anyway and therefore their security systems have been compromised at some point whether physically by a person(s) or by Hacking of some sort.
If i don't get any joy i will report it and hope they will investigate more but no doubt they have bigger fish to fry than my £3k complaint.
Not sure how the small claims court route would go Posy I thought gambling problems etc were not enforceable unless i could actually prove there was something amiss or someone was negligent
Once again Thanks for all the imput me duckys

Hi Chalkie,

Betfair told me my security was poor on
my computer(which at that time was true, but
they could not have known that).

My argument with them, was their site was supposed
to be secure,so my money should have been.

I could have sworn somebody said that a page or 2 back and provided a link for people to read to explain how lax security is when using the internet in public esp over public wifi networks where all passwords can easily be stolen!
By:
dave1357
When: 22 Apr 17 11:02
@chalkie You posted the logons from IP addresses that you claimed were nothing to do with you.  So someone other than you appears to have accessed the account.

It would be an extraordinary security oversight if Betfair staff could access passwords (although they would be able to activate password resets, but that hasn't happened here).

Is your username/password combo used anywhere else?  Or similar to that used anywhere else?

If the logons weren't there, a system error of some kind would be hugely likely to be the answer, but with the logons unauthorised access is the most likely.

No online betting firm will entertain claims from hacked accounts as people often claim that the account was hacked when they lose money.  In your favour, if the bet was one that wouldn't normally be accepted then that does look very suspicious.

Dave.... I am at a loss as to how "The system has worked exactly as intended"?  If the system works, then one would expect Betfair to have drawn Chalkie's attention to the theft surely?
By:
dave1357
When: 22 Apr 17 11:17
The "system" is meant to allow access to an account if the correct username and password is entered. That appears to have happened from the logon info provided.

How exactly would Betfair have been aware of the "theft"?
By:
EVILROYSLADE
When: 22 Apr 17 11:31
Dave...... I see your point of course. I also have to take Chalkie's word that nobody was aware of his login details. I can therefore only draw one conclusion. The whole set up is unsafe. On a personal note, I am going to contact Betfair and ask for withdrawals not to be held back waiting for someone to change their minds( reversals). I can therefore empty my OWN account at close of trading, and deposit back next day.

100% this must be reported to the police so they can investigate any possible dodgy employees at Betfair HQ. They will carry out investigation on all transactions (lets face it, if the person has hacked 3k then they've probably done it a few times). A background check on employees, followed by analysing activity on any likely suspects won't even be that time consuming for them.

They will not brush this off. 3k is three THOUSAND pounds!

Good luck with it, but don't hesitate to contact the police.

With respect, dave1357, nobody's disputing that the account has been accesses/hacked or whatever, even if we don't know for certain the precise route. We can all imagine rough details of how it might have happened in the circumstances.

It's the fact that the account was accessed in order to play on the Sportsbook rather than the exchange which constitutes the first mystery. It's really hard to imagine a plausible benefit, other than someone doing it for kicks. But even that doesn't explain how the bet in question turned out to be one that would be denied to virtually anyone, never mind this particular account holder.

How has a bet of 3 grand on the Sportsbook even been placed (taken), when it is common knowledge they lay pennies if you are lucky, and the OP has said he is restricted as well by them? That is the question I would like to see BF answer. That is all part of their system - restricting automatically. To me, if everything is as stated it has to be some inside job imo.

To clarify the point about gambling debts, the Gambling Act 2005 at

Section 335

Enforceability of gambling contracts

(1)
The fact that a contract relates to gambling shall not prevent its enforcement.

This has been in force since 2007.

See http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2005/19/section/335

The key point about this issue is that even if chalkie did log in from four different systems using the correct password/username the Sportsbook would have rejected an attempt to place 3k. Anyone else using the pw/un would also have had no luck placing. It is reasonable to suspect a BF system error or fraud committed within BF.

If BF investigate and determine it's an error they must reimburse. If they conclude it's not an error they must concede, given the expectation 3k would be blocked on a legitimate login, that fraud is a possibility.

Email BF and state that they have 48 hours to decide on reason - system error / internal fraud or you will report to police. It's easy enough to do. Report it to a police station in the area where BF has it's registered office and then file a claim for the 3k using Money Claim Online the government service -

https://www.gov.uk/make-money-claim-online

For 3k the fee is £150 but they will have to pay it if you win. Best part is they MUST respond and state their defence or you get default judgment against them. It's a good way to make them address the issue when they would be happier not to.
