recipe: It was there in 1864 that a confectioner named Thomas Fryer created his palliative for the common cold by combining pulverised sugar, linseed, liquorice, chlorodyne (a soothing mix of cannabis and chloroform) and pure acacia gum. It met with acclaim.

What a great read this thread has been, takes me back years. I remember as a young kid having to run errands for my Grandad and Grandma and my Auntie.
My Grandad worked as a Miner at the local pit. I used to have to go to the shop for his chewing tobacco an ounce of twist I had to ask for. It fascinated me, it came sealed in silver paper. I couldn't resist trying it one day. I bit the corner slightly open and nibbled a bit. I was sick as a dog it was like dog muck. I couldn't hide that I had opened it and got a clout for my trouble. My pet hate was having to get the coal in as they got concessionary loads about four times a year. They lived in a middle terrace with a small backstreet. It was dumped outside the front gate and I had to shovel it into the yard first then into the coal house. I can't imagine a 7 or 8 year old kid shovelling half a ton of coal these days. I remember the old kid taking me to the York Ebor meeting on the train as a treat. When we got to the station he took me to the staff canteen where we had a bacon sandwich. He then paid for my dinner, a plate of chips with 2 beard and butter, and left me train spotting for the day. I was 8. Happy days. |
