A group of kids at my school used to travel to school by train.
They traveled in the guards van and somehow nicked the detonators which should have been attached to the track in an emergency. Then as you would they exploded them in the school playground. After a big inquiry about ten of them were canned in front of the whole school at assembly. Cap bombs ?? These were the real thing. |

Trying to mend the punctured plastic football with a hot knife...dinner lady hovering as you gagged on the black bits in the mashed spud...Juicy Jim where you'd suck the orange to leave a lump of ice...Ted Mc Dougall scoring nine in one game...washing frozen solid on the line...Arthur of the Britains followed by Southern Soccer.....Mum threatening that Dad would give you a good hiding when he got home from work. And it was no idle threat....

''Trying to mend the punctured plastic football with a hot knife''
Thanks for reminding me of that I forgot all about it, we were always having to do that, especially after the ball had ended up in are make believe terraces(which were often bramble bushes) |

I hardly missed a meeting at Catford for decades. My Dad had dogs there early 70's and me afterwards until they closed the doors. The regulars were heartbroken when that place shut, it was my second home.

i used to go to catford dogs mainly Saturdays in my youth , my Saturdays would be spent ...........get up at 9am bit of brekka down to mecca bookies in albion st Rotherhithe,11 am hackney bags and Crayford betting on the dogs till the last race think there were 24 races in total both meetings when the dogs finished, into the pub 2 doors along ,then the horses started bet all day the old itv7 and lord oaksey, john rickman etc, around 2 or 3 0 clock the landlord would ask who wants pie and mash and take orders and he would phone the pie shop and get a cab to pick the grub up and deliver it to the pub. when the racing finished it would be off to catford dogs if we still had any money for a night of betting till about 10.30 then back to a mates house for a game of cards ! wernt much to bet on in them days

On the subject of pubs here is a link you South East London boys might find interesting
http://forum.charltonlife.com/discussion/27246/scariest-pubs My early punting / drinking life seems to have mirrored yours Foyle although probably played out earlier New Cross dogs and then on to the Apples and Pears That was a real Light and Bitter pub , it was always packed ( great DJ ) and the half pint bottles were littered all over the floor Apples and Pears during the week and Temple Bar Walworth Road weekends |

Here is a poser for you. I had a couple of dogs with Vernon Forde in Blindley Heath He had a schooling track adjacent to the kennels. One sunday whilst walking the dogs we got lost and stumbled upon another schooling track not far away It was owned by a double barreled named toff Cannot for the life of me remember his name Any ideas ??? |

Any of you chaps remember ''hipster'' circa mid 60s ?
All my older mates who'd started work would have about ten different pairs. The first thing I did circa '70 ( first wage packet) was to get a pair of tailor made made trousers, parallels with two patch pockets on the back... Montague Burtons ! ![]() |
