So that was the 75/76 season, and he probably was a novice chaser the previous season. Horses used to run more in those days, but unlikely he would have had even 10 runs over fences by the time of that Massey Ferguson win. Question is what happened to him afterwards.

Long memory required (and probably an unforgettable horse to boot). Sparrow Pie - looking for any info as it's this nag which I can blame for getting me into horse racing/betting probably the early 60's.
Saturday, June 15th, 1963 SPARROW PIE ENHANCES ASCOT CHANCE WITH H.Q. WIN Sparrow Pie and Der Ring, two Royal Hunt Cup hopes for Ascot next Wednesday, ran in the Mile Milton Handicap at Newmarket to-day. Although Der Ring came with a strong run in the final stages, top weight Sparrow Pie, who had taken up the running three furlongs out, held on gamely to win by threequarters of a length. Trainer G. Barling said that Sparrow Pie would trake his chance in the Royal Hunt Cup, despite a 6lb penalty. |

Vilgora was trained by - A 'Monty' Stevens Vilgora was a reasonably popular Handicap Sprinter - unsurprisingly, given the connotation of his name - being a son of Raffingora Best season was as a 4-yr-old in 1976, with multiple wins I would need to look up the individual races, though |

The first time I attended Royal Ascot in 1965, I saw Goldhill win the Kings Stand Stakes. I was very much in the cheap seats as a student at the time. I think Lester rode it but I can't find the full result online.

Ballyhoara Hill and Catsgore
Dr Crippen 22 Feb 11:38 Madhatter. Ballyhoara Hill: Won a 3 mile novice chase at Chepstow Saturday 17 March 1973. He was fifth with no chance when Solid Gold, Tinkers Green, Master Samson and Cintrah, all fell at the last fence leaving him clear. Won 20 lengths 5/4 favourite. Catsgore: Led tenth till fell last at Newbury 3 mile h/cap hurdle Friday 1 March 1974. Won by Mac’s Birthday 6/1 favourite with Rossmon 2nd I have got form the formbooks Madhatter, but I don’t know anywhere else that you can get the info from. madhatter 22 Feb 12:29 Dr Crippen - Thank you so much for this. That is just the info I was looking for (although I think Catsgore fell when clear at the last on several occasions?). The Ballyhoara Hill race was on telly so must have been part of the ITV & or the old BBC Triella...there's one that hasn't been mentioned on this thread yet! I doubt that the film still exists but I will never forget it....four horses all falling at the last to leave the distant fifth to win it! Mad. madhatter 22 Feb 12:33 Yes Glover was in Kes, and in the Pub scene in American Werewolf in London and in Alien 3 and he famously did the voice over for the Hovis advert (kid walking up cobbled street pushing his bike - ''nowt taken out'') and and countless other appearances...a great character actor. God, I sound like I'm really old..............but I'm only 46! Mad. HENRY the Seventh 22 Feb 12:49 Brian Glover also played Bottom in the BBC version of Shakespeare`s comedy play, A Midsummer Night`s Dream. He got kissed and cuddled by Titania, played by a lovely young Helen Mirren. For the information of "grappling fans" commentator Kent Walton, a canadian, was a disc jockey before becoming the voice of professional wrestling. I think he later married into serious money and became a kept man. What a good idea. Dr Crippen 22 Feb 13:15 You are right about Catsgore madhatter, in his previous race at Wincanton in a 2m 5f chase he had done the same thing, falling at the last when in the lead. In fact when he fell at Newbury that made five times on the trot where he had fallen or unseated his rider. It didn’t seem to bother him though, because he won another seven races in the following seasons. |

Part of a conversation with a fellow forumite from 18 years ago!!!
Another one I loved was called Firefright....ran mostly over 10f i think, always tailed off early and then finished like a train... Can't remember anything else about it but my dad religously backed it every time it ran! |

Sageform.I'm not 100% sure but think Jimmy Etherington rode Goldhill in the Kings Stand.

A little nudge to the memory is remembered tomorrow at Ascot i.e Sagaro,a great stayer of the era,I seem to remember backing Buckskin to beat him a couple of times,in vain probably.Memories not so clear tbh.
Also remember backing a horse called Mrspurplepeopleater either late December 76 or early Jan 77,in Liverpool for a couple of days R & R from the Sir Galahad,Victoria docks, lost I think, just like certain songs some races/horses can remind you of particular events or places when otherwise they would perhaps be lost. |

Meladon and Carligford Castle first winner i backed at the festival and the royal meeting backed them both with Fred Binns though this game is easy .

Thanks tobermory. My defective memory must have mixed it up with another year. Didn't Jack Ormston train a winner with Lester riding? My only record book only goes back to 1965 so it could have been 63 or 64.

Not run in 1964 due to waterlogged course

Er, 'she' was a gelding according to Timeform. Originally trained by Harvey Leader, Pritchard-Gordon took over in 1972, when Trillium was a 6-y-old. Best win in 1972 was the 5F handicap at the Epsom Derby meeting. Rate reply: | reportblock user blackbarn blackbarn15 Jul 22 15:31Joined: 02 Jan 05 | Topic/replies: 13,083 | Blogger: blackbarn's blog Trillium was a gelding, and not that small. Trained by Harvey Leader for first three racing seasons thence Pritchard-Gordon. Raced from age 3 'til the age of 10. Very useful handicapper and regularly won three or four good handicaps a season from age four 'til eight. Won at Goodwood too OnlookerCool ged27 Jul 22 16:07Joined: 09 Jan 03 | Topic/replies: 11,132 | Blogger: ged's blog Gavid Pritchard-Gordon renamed his stables Trillium Place (it was originally called Graham Place), so presumably won a few bob on him. David Simcock trains there now. The horse was a fast starter - Pat Eddery rode him, and said he had to be careful not to fall out the back as he left the stalls. |

Hayden - Whenever I see the name Trillium - I always instantly think - Bruce Hobbs, too ...
Even though, I remember your above reproduced post from last year - too. ![]() |

Thanks Hayden , brought back some memories there..

Onlookwe - it could be all those T's trained by Hobbs for Cambanis that triggers the memory.

Sageform. I don't recall Jack Ormston having a winner at Royal Ascot around that time. You may have been thinking of Roughlyn trained in the north winning the Kings Stand.

Well who trained Majority Rule the 1963 winner ridden by Piggott?
|
|
By:
Found it now......1963 King's Stand Stakes MAJORITY RULE 100/8 owned by John Muldoon, trained by Paddy O'Gorman and ridden by Lester Piggott
The point being that the horse won in 1963 and was ridden by Piggott as the poster has said. |

Horse running today called Trillium , seem to remember a horse of the same name who was pretty useful. Remember him / her winning at York around 1961 . I was 10. !

For fans of Into View (and Bula), here's the film of him winning that race at Sandown where he came from being tailed off in a 5-runner race to getting up on the line. It's the second of 2 races shown in the piece- the first is the valuable hcap hurdle where Bulaq passed 10 horses from the 2nd last to keep his unbeaten record (13 from 13 I think) under 12 stone plus. Both ridden by Paul Kellewway.
