Might I refer the jury to the phrase 'nothing is definite.' Might I also encourage you to differentiate between the manager and the boss. The manager responds generously to media questions. The boss has the final say.

Don't bother.  It's got eff all to do with the JC and BF are not going to void anything.

Very well put 'Sandown'. The trainer leading punters up the garden path so close to final decs is lacking integrity and respect for the sport and punters.

Aidan leaves horses in races upto the last minute becauses this is what "The Lads" want him to do.  It is not his final decision to run them, even though people ask him (and quote him) as if it is.
It is in the owners interests to give give a positive impression of ALL their horses, as they are breeders and don't want to (prematurely) rule out the chance of any of them becoming a champion stallion (or broodmare).  Reputation is important.  Aidan is not in this to land bets:  He is just employed by business people to do a job.  And he is reliable and outstanding at it.
He said that the horses work (which would, presumably  have been timed) would be analysed and that they would look at the results of the blood tests.
I have no problem with this.
There have been far worse things in the antepost market since Betfair started:  T.J.Taffe and Kicking King for instance (won the Gold Cup after being ruled out and matched at 1000.0).  Also J.P.McManus with several trainers (including Henderson).  Jim Bolger (who I like) has also been deceptive (though Sheikh Mo probably told to him to be evasive over Dawn Approach's running plans).
Laying Dawn Approach at 100 in the antepost market resulted in my worst ever day on Betfair, but I learned from this.
People who complain about losing money should ask themselves why they fooled themselves.  By doing this they may get better at their punting.

In my view the Derby has long since stopped being the greatest race on the British calendar.  It might be the best but the Derby long ago slid down any  scale of greatness.  In the last twenty five years only three winners have gone on to win the Arc.  Not a great ratio.

Am I right in thinking Ballydoyle is separated into colts/fillies then further by 2yos/elders? Barring SMB and BB (possibly) the 3yo colts have been underwhelming to say the least.  Further disappointments at Curragh tonight to go along with the English 2000 Gns trials, the 2000 itself, the English Derby trials and many other races outside those.  Now, after workouts/blood tests the yard has pulled all their horses from the Derby bar one.  Is there a problem in that part of the stable?  This is a big departure from their normal MO.

Ok mate.  Thanks.
Lough Dearg, 3L and 6L behind Bolshoi Ballet recently just trailed in second last at the Curragh, in a moderate listed race.

Caveat Emptor. (the principle that the buyer alone is responsible for checking the quality and suitability of goods before a purchase is made.)

Yes, I am fully aware of the risks of the AP market, thank you very much. I have been doing this for enough time and for enough money. AP remains my biggest winning area, so I have no illusions. A crime is not reduced or even increased by comparison with other crimes. They are irrelevant to this argument.

Yes, I am fully aware that AOB takes orders but we are talking about a man who might be said to be the best trainer with the best horses anywhere. He is fully aware that his remarks are carefully listened to so he has no excuse for not being aware of the consequences of what he says and must avoid being ambiguous if anyone should.. He may not care but he should. It should be clear that he intends to make no decision until a decision is made.

As I said, I doubt that very large sums are involved, but fellas, we are talking principles here and like justice, principles matter. I would consider that BF and others would score a moral win should they choose to void all bets both back and lay. As for BM's they too could treat this as an ex-gratia payment and create a positive PR win.

If you want the exchange to void bets assume you think BF still pay out the layers, most of whom will have layed in good faith?  There is someone on the other side, you know...

As I said, no chance.

The period in question Headmaster is just over 24 hours. I am not suggesting that bets be voided before AOB's statement nor after. Yes, there will be layers who acted in good faith and plenty who didn''t who knew more than the average Joe. We are talking about the shop window here, the Derby for goodness sake. Neither side loses with a void bet, merely the layers opportunity to profit from an injustice. Whether BF accede to the reqest or not , an official view needs to be expressed. This will get more negative coverage if they and others do not act.

Principles?!  What have they got to do with punting?  Apart from anything else, how can anyone lump on or even modestly invest in any O Brien horse given his stable's record in the race, or any other race, over the last twenty years.  He has rarely known who his best horse has been so how can we, let alone guess what will actually run?
O'Brien is still unsure how many he will run in race, but it is highly unlikely all six of his current entries will stand their ground.
He explained: "Nothing is definite yet.

I'd HD with Shishkin, and I'd 'lay' aplenty but never anticipated this reason for a probable no-show. Waxing lyrical just on sunday and tuesday (as reported) about his well-being of HD and others, and possibility of 5 runners then suddenly saying probable one representative only is nothing but misleading and insulting to backers and sport.

Anyone who actual believes a word O'Brien or Ryan Moore say about their horses deserves everything they get. They make politicians look like bastions of the truth.Laugh

Didn't have a bean on Bolshoi Ballet or any of the other Coolmore horses so I'm delighted O'Brien has seen sense and withdrawn his other runners.

High Definition has never looked an Epsom type and they may well have ruined him by running him there. At least now he has the chance to fulfil his long term potential and win a Pertemps Hurdle qualifier.Laugh

Looking at the race now a smaller field it should mean less traffic problems.

I had a little bet on John Leeper at 13/1 after his trial and my other play in the race is Gear Up who hopefully can lead them a merry dance for a long way and trade much shorter in running than the 100+ I have been backing him at.

Perhaps you are unaware LH that principles were and have been very much at the heart of betting over the centuries. Honouring a bet when no paper is involved, with credit betting for example, never welshing on money owed whether its to a bookmaker or, shaking hands on a deal. Principles LH. Very much something to do with punting even if today a betting debt is recoverable in law. If anyone profited from the knowledge that all bar one horse would be withdrawn, then that is anti -integrity and would be called out by the JC if the culprits were to be identified. More likely, it's simply a case of AOB being a great trainer but a naïve man.

Justice doesn't just apply to the sharp, the rich,, the famous. Even those who are simple minded enough to believe trainers and jockeys and take them at their word are deserving of a "fair go" as my Aussie friends might say. Clearly,Uncle Puncle, you must be the sharpest knife in the drawer and would never be caught out.

Sandown, if you don't like losing money on non-runners, why didn't you wait until the day of the race market?
Anyhow, Bets on this race won't be voided, because no criminal activity or market manipulation is apparent.  High Definition did NOT drift out to 25.0 or 30.0 before O'Briens announcement. I think he was still 2nd fav at the time.

Why do you keep mentioning the JC, Sandown? it hasn't been in charge of racing for 30 odd years.  I'm unsure what your allegation is too.  "The lads" have put everyone away and layed it back on here?

It's laughable that people are condemning ante-post betting rather than Aidan O'Brien.

i was surprised reading aob,s positive comments about high definition last night to the point i put a pony on him just because of what he said . having no interest in the horse before , i said he was a leger type i think , his exuberance towards the horses chance directly lead me to placing a bet on him . he talked about the lads having the say so , but , isnt aidan one of the lads himself ? surely he knew the horse was about to be pulled ? the comments he made make sense to me if aidan is trying to force their hand into running him , by making them look like tw at s if they pull the plug . i think thats whats gone on .

'NOTHING IS DEFINITE YET.'
Spare me the self pity guys. If you've been backing HD for the Derby, you've got it wrong. He hasn't been withdrawn to spite you - it's because he's not going to be good enough. Backers have made a massive error of judgement, but I guess it's more convenient to lash out and blame someone else. Go and watch the videos of his 3 races and ask yourself why anyone fancied him for Epsom.

Howsellsy please spare us this sort of junk, you’ve cleared had a bet on one of the other runners so spare us the muck

Marksman I respect your posts but you have laid high definition or you had earlier in the thread, I posted earlier before the racing post did about high definition and he was trading at 20 and reaching 30, last night before O’Brien’s comments trading at 9.2....well done on the lay by the way nice one.

I’m totally with sandowns thoughts in regards O’Brien putting people away...he has openly said he intends running the horse, however for me he’s been a big drifter for weeks on here leading up to the race, that isn’t the point sandown is making though. O’Brien is saying/hyping/ramping he is running the horse and has come forward plenty yesterday and at the weekend and saying he’s running 6.

Then today we’re running 1 and gives running plans for all those other non runners from the derby, for their next races...

Anyway let’s keep it honest lads... he’s shoved it up plenty of people and let’s not wheel out the ante post bollox when the trainer says the day before the horse has come forward plenty and the previous day before that I’m running 6 potentially because we(coolmore) love the derby

I for one have wasted a load of time and effort on the race admittedly without financial loss

A word for the opening post...unlucky pal

And this follows his almost out of character over the top comments about Santa Barbara which resulted in that one going off a ridiculous price for the 1,000 Guineas. On the day she looked nothing special, and was well beaten, in what was more than likely an ordinary renewal. Add in all his horses stuffed out of sight in the 2,000 Guineas and he has played an absolute blinder for the bookmakers.

OK so it's not the JC, I'm stuck in the past. Why are you splitting hairs though Headmaster, it's a poor defence and makes not the slightest difference to my argument.

I'm well aware that these guys are so damnned rich they haven't direcltly benefitted from this scam, but scam it is, even if it wan't intentional. They don't give a thought or consideration for the rest of us who just play the horses mostly for the love of ,but hopefully for some financial return. In fact, it's the total unconcern for others involved in the whole sport that sticks in my craw. If anyone was misled by AOB's very bullish comments into backing any of these horses after the wholly misleading comments, then that's not apparently anyone;s fault but their own.

It wasn't too many years ago that the AP market was huge and created tremendous publicity for a long while before a race but the life has gone out of it entirely now. Bookmakers first closed credit accounts which avoided backers having cash tied up for long periods, then they closed customer accounts for those who managed to win even though they claimed it was a loss leader. Now, even owners are doing their bit to finish off the AP market.

And for those who think that I am grumbling over nothing, I can assure you that I have experienced far worse than this in the past. How about putting a few grand on a Derby runner the day before it injured itself on the gallops? No problem, apart from some swearing from me, take it on the chin, that's the risk of the AP. But this is human intervention and not luck. Anyone who has been mislead by this will think three times before ever getting involved in AP betting in the future so the death of AP by a thousand cuts continues.

Just suck it up say those of you who don't object for whatever reason. As I have said, it's the absence of concern for the customers who matter, the racegoers, the punters, the enthusiasts. They, we, matter to this sport. This is not just any old race.  IT'S THE DERBY!!!
