I just checked the weather forecast for Paris. Completely dry for the next 5 days. Anyone assuming it will be even on the soft side may be making a mistake.

If it was actually good going or even faster, the price on Flintshire would be far too long. Orfevre does look a worthy favourite, but I would personally want at least 4/1 at this stage as much can happen to him between now and the race.

Of course it was good going, I reckon The Fugue would be interesting as she is a 126+ filly meaning a horse would have to be at least 132 to beat her well.

Either way, the soft ground trials would have rather less meaning unless the weather turns or the taps are turned on to keep the going soft.

According to my records over the past 20 years, when its been soft for the trials day its only gone to good/fast once out of 10 times. Just a thought.

Sandown, is that proper soft or French soft?

I've had a look at French ground descriptions for the Arc over the last 10 years compared to time based estimates of the ground. The going was only genuinely soft last year and 2010 when Workforce won.

Official description - Time based estimate
2003. Holding        - Slow side of good
04. Good             - Good/firm
05. Good/soft        - Good/firm
06. Good             - Good/firm
07. Good/soft        - Good
08. Good/soft        - Good
09. Good             - Good/firm
10. Very soft        - Soft
11. Good             - Good/firm
12. Heavy            - Very soft/heavy

Sandown, is that proper soft or French soft? - very well observed figgis and backed up by serious research.

I only looked at the BBC 5 day forecast and its dry. Longer term forecasts are too unreliable. My guess is that the official going will be good to soft and the actual going will be good. However proper rain or serious sunshine etc etc c

Nice to hear that forecast even nicer if it stays dry for the next three weeks. I appreciate it's a big if. Given that the home team's best chances of winning rest with Flintshire and Treve I doubt we will see much watering.

Flintshire has been campaigned as Fabre's number one Arc contender since he won his first Group race. Intello might have a chance in the Champion because the trip is closer to his optimum but he still has plenty to prove wherever he turns up. If it is good ground for the Arc he doesn't beat Flintshire and if it is soft that will in all likelihood expose any suspect stamina. Even if he wins his trial I wouldn't be rushing to back him.

Last time I checked oddschecker bookmakers hadn't cut much so seemingly not too worried about the Pricewise selection.

I've used official descriptions which provides consistency. I can only find 2 years in the last 30 when the ground went from soft to g/firm, firm -2004 Bago and 1986 Dancing Brave. The trials were held on g/s or softer on 16 occasions. Not surprising when you think about it. Needs to be an Indian Summer to dry out.And how often do we see those.

French going descriptions are well known to overstate the moisture in the ground compared to our descriptions, this happens throughout the year, not just on Arc day. Whether a trainer like Fabre has much faith in the descriptions before committing one of his runners or uses his own judgement I don't know.
By:
Sandown
When: 18 Sep 13 21:26
Yes, I'm aware of that Figgis. The fact is that trainers will obviously form their own opinion. The essential point is that in all liklihood we cannot expect the ground to be faster on Arc day than on trials day( however it actually rides)
By:
Figgis
When: 18 Sep 13 21:33
Well, for a change the ground perfectly matched the description on trials day, it's not something I'd care to bet on but with over 2 weeks to go I see no reason why the ground couldn't be good for Arc day, which should offer no excuse for any runner.

When I say good I mean our definition of good, the French description is likely to say softer.

Officially it was given as soft.I made it gd/soft. It could be good on Arc day but the percentage call is that it will be gd/soft like Sunday.More likely to rain this time of the year than sunshine although i am aware that this weekend looks dry. Its what happens during the week running up that matters, is it not?
By:
Figgis
When: 18 Sep 13 21:58
I have the first race over 5f as good to soft, then the rest as soft, but we're talking marginal differences and it depends where you draw the line for each going category. I don't know for sure, but I'm doubtful that just because the ground was soft for trials day then it's unlikely to be better for Arc day when they're 3 weeks apart? Especially as those trials day descriptions could be just as inaccurate as the Arc day descriptions. Couldn't it just as easily be said that as the going for the last 10 years has only genuinely been soft twice then it's more likely it will be no softer than good? As you say, the weather in the week leading up will decide.

Lasy year the ground on my figures was good on trials day but soft/heavy on Arc day.In 2011 it was good/good on my figs.In 2010 I made it good on trials day and soft/heavy on Arc day.2009 good/good. So, it changed significantly twice in 4 years. I wouldn't get excited about Flintshire/The Fugue until I know the ground on the day. Pointless getting involved beforehan. Tom Segal will persuade a lot of people to risk money for  a the chance that of gaining a few points. Stupid.

6 year aftertime but to generally concur French going descriptions are rubbish.
The day Dylan Thomas won his Arc I rough and readied the early times to get an idea of what the ground was actually like in the hope that it was running fast.

When you consider how tough this game is info like that is priceless.

With regard predicting the going, the racing the day before helps but there's no substitute for reliable info from on the day so trying to use historical precedent 3 weeks in advance seems a bit tenuous to me, but fair do's for attempting to work it out.

Do you think Flintshire's form is good enough even on decent ground? Not that one can't win the Arc with relatively moderate form under its belt, but on previous form he could hardly be a confident bet. I like The Fugue, she did me a big favour at Leopardstown so I'm not one to underrate her but her form is still below what is usually required, also for me her improvement has levelled off.
By:
Figgis
When: 18 Sep 13 22:25
Yes, jair, as I have very little faith in their descriptions then I don't think we're going to get a proper idea until the racing the day before, while obviously taking note of the current weather.

I think some folk are missing the point. If a French trainer like Fabre says he isn't keen on soft ground, that means he isn't keen on French soft. It doesn't matter what we interpret it as.

If you are only interested in one person's viewpoint wouldn't it be easier just to send personal messages?

On a line through Ocovango you could have Flintshire as the winner of the Niel on good ground, anything more than that is down to opinion.

Flintshire has to improve on his July win to win the Arc. The point is that he showed the kind of finishing split that only a few top class horses can produce over 12f. Fabre rates him highly. I'm sure that the horse will improve a ton. So, yes, if he runs, he must go on the short-list but it is quite a long short-list at the moment. It pays not to forget that the horse that wins usually improves considerably on what its done before although there are more than a few winners that didn't have to.

Graeme, yes, but French description 'good to soft' can often be anything from good to firm to good. Would he run Flintshire on French 'good to soft' = our good? Personally I have no idea.

I was addressing Sandown's reference to said horses. If you're waiting for a personal invitation on every point of discussion I'm afraid you'll have a long wait.

I can't have a bet yet because -
horse might be a non-runner
don't know what else runs
don't know the going
don't know the draw
bookie odds don't appeal

2012 Arc won in a time of 2m 37.68 sec.
2011 Arc won in a time of 2m 24.49 sec.
that's 13.19 seconds difference, that equates to approx 66 Fookin Lengths
Work that out.

2011 was a record breaking year with Danedream. Plum draw, quick ground. Ideal conditions. Last year however it was like the Somme.

Most horses can race over 1 Furlong in 12 seconds,
One has to question if the Distance they raced over (12F) was measured accurately,
They moved the rails??.

good grief no one can forecast how much rain ,sun Paris will get between now and race day.Its clear all the Flintshire backers on this thread are choosing to belive Paris will have an indian summer this year get a grip and open your eyes read the form not guessing and hoping.

I backed Manndawi at 84/1. He was well done by Flintshire in the Grand Prix, though he does have a high carriage. He runs today at St Cloud, and i imagine that if he wins the odds will go. If he is good enough he would be one of few who would handle proper soft ground.

Claude Duval: Intello's preferred target according to connections is the Arc if he runs well on Sat. Fabre will then decide whether he does go to  the Arc - if not the  Champion Stakes

With regards to the so called weather predictions for the next 3wks, they are normally wrong with their "5 day" forecasts for the coming wk, never mind what its going to be in 3wks time on Arc day Crazy. Wait & see is the call imo.

If you look up my aftertiming post after last year's race you will see my explanation for the big difference in times at Longchamp due to going.
Peintre Celebre's previous record was 2:24:60 in 1997.  That year I had my biggest loss ever on a horse - £715 at 16/1 on Borgia who finished third.  I backed her a week earlier and conditions changed.
I have worked it out, and explained it.

In the last 25 years these were slower than Solemia's 2:37.68.
Two are considered legends.
1992 ___ Subotica ___ 2:39.00
1993 ___ Urban Sea ___ 2:37.90
1999 ___ Montjeu ___ 2:38.50

These were close
1988 ___ Tony Bin ___ 2:37.30
2001 ___ Sakhee ___ 2:36.10

On his final European appearance, Dancing Brave was sent overseas for the first time to contest the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp in Paris.
Apart from Shardari, Shahrastni and Triptych, the field also included the German champion Acatenango and the French colt Bering, who was unbeaten in four races in 1986.
Eddery restrained Dancing Brave in the early stages before switching him to the wide outside to challenge in the straight as the runners spread across the width of the course.
With 200m to run he was not in the first ten, but produced an "electrifying burst"[5] to take the lead 50m from the finish and won by a length and a half from Bering[14] in a race record time of 2:27.70
