Clerk of the course Jonjo Sanderson said on Wednesday: "We have been watering every day since the middle of September up to our meeting on October 14 and have continued to water since.

so don't expect much root growth there then.

hopefully horses will get enough purchase on the loose topsoil to avoid serious accidents at take off and landing.
otherwise it will be the end of this course.

Apart from closing down for 12 months, I don't think Wetherby could have possibly done any more than what they have.

I really do hope they have a successful and incident-free meeting this weekend

Stuart Machin classes it as quick underneath squelchy on top.
So not bets from me.
Sounds a bit like the stands side @ Royal Ascot saturday.

Be interesting to read all the feedback from todays races...
Surface 'looked' ok from the few races I watched, but weren't the times quite slow?
You'd not consider taking a horse that likes quick ground there now, would you, even if they did say it was good/firm?

Going reports page of the Post website utterly worthless, without a single stick reading.
You have to click on cards unless you just want the clerks highly subjective opinion of the going & of course even if you get the stic readings, you dont really know when they were taken, or if they were taken at all, because they aren't independently verified....

Ascot:
GOING: GOOD (Good to firm in places; watering) (GoingStick: Chs 8.4, Hdl 8.6). (Light rain max: 17°C)

Ayr:
GOING: SOFT (passed INSPECTION 7am Saturday; GoingStick: 4.3) (Fresh ground provided on the home bend by dolling out rail, extending all race distances by approx 15 yds). (Light rain shower max: 14°C)

Barely raceable when the stick reading was taken.....could be attritional up there today?

Newmarket:
GOING: GOOD (GoingStick 7.7). (Light rain max: 16°C)

The going stick 'limbo dance' continues.....how low can he go?

Wetherby
GOING: GOOD (Good to firm in places; watered; GoingStick 8.0). (Light rain shower max: 17°C 63°F

Faster ground than Newmarket, yet they were coming in 'mud splattered & strung out yesterday?

You'd look at the above & then add in yesterdays race times & you would think that Mr Linley would be ordering a full investigation into what is actually going on when the state of the ground is being determined on our racecourses.........
Unfortunately, British Racing doesn't run like that & no one will do anything pro-active until they have to & getting 'action' from these inert plebs usually only occurs after accidents. If it's only confusing punters, dont expect anyone to give a monkeys about this in these Gross Profits Tax funded days.......

Thursday's meeting at Haydock will have to pass a 7am inspection if it is to go ahead.

Heavy rain at the track has forced clerk of the course Kirkland Tellwright to take an early look.

He said: "We had 46 millimetres of rain last night and it is still continuing to rain on and off today with more forecast.

"The track is currently soft, waterlogged in places and we couldn't have raced today."

He added that he was gutted that he was unable to water LOL.

Looking forward to the breeders cup

Its sad in a way that you now have to go to the US in order to be confident of getting the right information, i can get sectionals, dont have to worry about watering, and have they tried to lead the punter astray. i dont have to pay for videos if i want a bet

i used to love Ascot, but i must admit that, the breeders cup now offers so much, i consider it the best flat meeting in the world

Highclere set to have first runner over jumps
By Tom Kerr7.28AM 3 NOV 2009
HIGHCLERE Thoroughbred Racing, one of Britain's most successful ownership syndicates, is set to launch a first foray into the world of jumps racing - 17 years after its first runner on the Flat.

The syndicate, best known for its connection with Petrushka, Tamarisk, Delilah and Lake Coniston, has become a familiar name to Flat followers since its inception and built a reputation as one of the most consistently successful ownership syndicates.

Nowhopes are rising that the success can be transferred to jump racing following the purchase of Sunwise, a John Oxx-trained three-year-old, for £135,000.

The gelded son of Arch will be trained by Paul Nicholls, and Harry Herbert, Highclere's managing director, said this is not the only horse the syndicate plans to run over jumps.

"We have only bought one horse so farand will probably be buying another couple at least to follow on this year,"
Herbert said. "There is such demand from our owners for some winter action that we decided to kick off and try to do it properly.

"Graham Bradley bought Sunwise, a 95-rated horse, for us. Graham has been looking around for us for some time.

"There has been a wish among the club itself to have at least one jumper and and on this occasion Sunwise wasthe perfect horse because he ticked all the right boxes in make and shape, and
pedigree, trip and ground."

Sunwise won twice, most recently on October 9 over 1m4f on Dundalk's all-weather surface.

Holland freedom rests on Thursday court date

By Jon Lees5.28PM 4 NOV 2009
DARRYLL HOLLAND will appear in court in Northern Cyprus on Thursday for a hearing that is expected to determine whether he will be released from the prison he has occupied since being arrested last week in connection with an incident involving counterfeit money.

Holland and John Tabor were detained in Kyrenia, a coastal town in the Turkish-controlled side of Cyprus, nine days ago after an attempt was made to buy a mobile phone with what were believed to be fake US dollars.

Holland has denied any wrongdoing but he and Tabor, who is reported to have sometimes driven jockeys to racecourses, will discover on Thursday whether they face a trial. The hearing could result in the jockey being released, put on bail or remanded in custody until the date of the trial - if one is required.

Holland, who has not ridden in Britain since October 24, is expected to be supported at the hearing by his wife Jacqui, who has flown back from a business trip in Barbados.

"I understand Darryll's wife flew over today so I am waiting to hear back," Holland's agent David Harrison said. "I've not done anything about booking any rides for Darryll until we know what is happening."

In addition, the Foreign Office are providing consular assistance for Holland.

Does seem extremely harsh that Holland has already spent 9 days in prison, presumably without being charged. And it is also strange that the PJA has not had anybody over there to try and get him out before now.

How much are mobile phones in Cyprus ? Or is the full story yet to come out ?

Darryll Holland released from custody in Cyprus

By Jon Lees11.40AM 5 NOV 2009 DARRYLL HOLLAND has been released from custody in Northern Cyprus and is free to return home.

According to his father-in-law Peter Merchant, Holland was collected by his wife Jacqui from the police station where he had been detained since early last week without having to appear in court.

Holland was expected to attend a hearing in Kyrenia, with another Briton named as John Tabor, nine days after his arrest over an incident involving counterfeit money. He had denied any wrongdoing.

Merchant said: "Darryll was released this morning and all we have heard from Jacqui is that the police are apologising like hell. It didn't even go to court.

"She has picked him up from the police station and we are awaiting further news. It's a great relief."

Holland's release was confirmed by the Foreign Office, who said Tabor was due to appear in court on Thursday.

Kevin Darley, chief executive of the Professional Jockeys Association, on Thurday expressed his delight at Holland's release. "I am very pleased that this matter has been resolved, and Darryll will be on his way back to Britain as soon as possible," he said.

'Extremely tired' Darryll Holland back in Britain

By Jon Lees4.42PM 6 NOV 2009 DARRYLL HOLLAND was back home in Newmarket on Friday recovering from the ordeal of spending nine days in police custody in Turkish-controlled Northern Cyprus.

The jockey was "extremely tired" but glad to be back in Britain, according to his wife Jacqui, who flew back with him after his release without charge from the police station in Kyrenia where he had been detained following his arrest by officers investigating the use of fake currency.

Holland had denied any wrongdoing and received a full apology from police on his release.

BHA ease rules over jockeys' mobile phones

By Jon Lees4.28PM 6 NOV 2009
JOCKEYS who go racing when they are not riding are now allowed to use their mobile phones as a result of a change to the restrictions.

The BHA has altered rules which had prevented the likes of Carl Llewellyn, who continued to ride when he held a training licence, from using his phone on the racecourse other than in the jockeys' designated phone zone.

The restrictions had also prevented a jump jockey attending a Flat meeting or vice versa from using mobiles but under the change the rules will only apply if the jockey enters the changing room.

The Professional Jockeys Association (PJA) have welcomed the relaxation to rules which had previously prevented all licensed jockeys from making calls during racing on a racecourse from anywhere other than a designated area of the weighing room whether they were riding at the meeting or not
******************************************
Why on earth would anyone object to making calls from a designated area if they had nothing to hide & why on earth would the BHA relax this rule?

Matt Chapman rightly asked the question "was it withdrawn because of the ground (horse needs it on top)? He then added "if not why have we not had a going change?".

Well jonjo, if Carl Llewlyn was in the parade ring and needed to get a message fast to the jockey via the stable lad on the way out to the track it would be absolutely crazy for him to have to go a long way out of the way to make the phone call.

They are ABSOLUTELY right to relax the rule imo.

Absolute cobblers.
It's never been a problem for trainers to make calls, it's JOCKEYS we're on about, jockeys, not trainers.
