JJ, why did you stop betting at the dogs? I got into the game in the late '90's as a punter (though family involved since before I was born) and heard tales of you at the Stow. My uncle told me a tale of a disgruntled husband taking offence at one stage? Hope you are still in the black.
Love these threads. |

No one has mentioned Ron Bolton for me when i first went racing he was king of the ring. Before you say he was a horse bookmaker he also bet at the Stow and again in that bay Gordon Hutchinson and Taffy bet along side him and at the time they were all playing big. Sadly no more, but what days they were.
|
|
By:
Southwark, I put Ron Bolton up on my list on 28/9 10.11.
A good layer, and I always thought an absolute gent. i also put Gordon Hutchinson on my list. for the same reason. As you say "What days they were" |
|
By:
Ronnie B & Hutch were gents. Always down to "boy".
2 rings in the home straight - those were the days!! |
|
By:
ron bolton used to keep the fav on his side and try lay the rags gordon was a gent
|
|
By:
Yes MDM - First i heard of "reverse books" was from Ronnie B.

|
By:
John Henwood is a good old stick, always has been to me anyway.I should have mentioned him earlier myself, I like the bloke personally. I recall him betting without and putting the rag at some mad price and putting the jolly that those who bet straight bigger than they all did. It was quite funny to see that.

for those of you whoo were dog regulars, bumped into Lionel Parker tonight
in Gerrards Cross.....thanks fully looking great...quiet nice guy...loads of history |
|
By:
"celticgr"...........Whilst he was living in Bakers Wood, I bumped into Lionel & his wife in the South Ruislip Homebase.....they were looking at wallpaper.
I later heard a rumour that he had moved to Northamptonshire. |
|
By:
The photographs were great & brought back memories of what is already a bygone era.
Although the John White betting on the James Ford joint appears to be the current one, it may well be his father....family likeness. I have a photograph somewhere of him betting at Lingfield in the early 1960s on the same joint. |

Mr M
He is indeed still in Bakers Wood...I meant to ask him a bit more but I was in a rush...his wife was charming and she knew Ascot was due to be on tomorrow..very impressive(I am due to go but it looks 1,000/1) The John White picture was JW Senior....the similarity is spooky, the same look over the book...exactly...the guy on the joint looks like Sonny Dennis but it isnt...some may not have take to Junior but he was always always ok with me,if I was ever doing anything Roy Curtis would pop over and ask,it never hurt to tell the workmen something was going to happen before it did..Tony Russo was on the firm for a while and had a lot of time for him also,he helped me a lot when I was about 14 at White City(as did a load of others) No doubt you saw Bill and John Mac,Okey and Fred Deverson...will try to find a few more....J Banks is shown, but my guess this is a later shot as he is at Ayr... |

Celtic, I noticed Fred Deverson next to Johnny Mack; they spent a lot of years next to each other. Fred I found a gent, never too much trouble to chat about things.

By:
"celticgr".........The clue to which John White is picture is obvious.
"Junior" chalks up very neat figures......those shown could not be his. One day at Cheltenham they were strolling together as if they owned the place. "Senior" was wearing a wide brimmed hat.....Bill said to me "There goes the Sheriff & the Deputy" |

Sad news:
informed today that Leslie Woods passed away.lovely guy...many of you dog guys would have known him, although he mainly was a horse guy...RIP..NEVER EVER HEARD ANYONE SAY A BAD WORD ABOUT HIM....UNIQUE |

By:
celticgr: Just had a look at the web site and think I've found a photograph of Clapton Dog Track. It's one of greyhounds coming out of the traps on a grass track with a race distance board next to the traps saying "NGRC 570". The only track I can think of with that distance was Clapton.
The.mad.dog.man: Nobody would want to say a word against John White Sr as he could handle himself in a scrap, but a fair man all the same. |
|
By:
I've just remembered there was a 570 yard distance at Hackney & as it is a grass track, it might be Hackney, (Clapton was a Peat track)
|
|
By:
Madghost.. Clapton was always grass and it was 575 yds.. the Hackney trip for many years was if I remember rightly 523 yds
|
|
By:
the mad ghost john white snr was a gent his son i would not p.ss on him if he was on fire
|
|
By:
I never bet with the John White firm, ever. It's too much of a coincidence for us all to have the same opinion.
|
|
By:
Brighton (Hove) if I remember had an extended standard distance, which may he been 570 yds. It is a distance that was more commonly found in Irish tracks though.

"celticgr".......I feel saddened by the passing of Leslie Woods who I got to know very well after I retired & started to go racing on a more regular midweek basis.
He was a most interesting person to speak to & he spent one of our last conversations bemoaning the decline in status of the "National Stakes" at Sandown. I heard a lovely story about Leslies appearance on the Rails as the original representative for the "Victoria Sporting Club" Royal Ascot arrived & an unknown gentleman went down the rails asking the bookmakers if they would accept bets from him covered by certified cheques. "Certainly" replied Leslie. A couple of races later, he came in. What price is "so & so"? he asked. "9/4" said Leslie. "Ninety thousand to forty" The bet was not layed, but Leslie had met John McManus for the first time. |

Hello slippy, hope all is well.
I found a photo of Brixton Dog Track 1932 on www.topfoto.co uk . Did you know it Mr Memory. |
|
By:
I'm in very good form thank you Mr.E. hope you and the family are as well. I wonder where in Brixton was the dog track? I was born in Brixton in 1966 in a road behind where the Ritzy cinema is now, can't think where the dog track could have been off the top of my head to be honest. Maybe up Acre Lane on the way to Clapham? I would be grateful if someone who knows could tell me.

Monster link slippy, best way to get it is to go to
http://www.topfoto.co.uk write Brixton Greyhounds in the search, you get four photos. I am hoping Mr memory might help. I bought an aerial photograph of Tooting Stadium with his help. The missus has just had a big op. hopefully this will sort out the ongoing problem. 3 month recovery so confined to the UK this Winter. |
