A man of your greyhound experience Mr.E is allowed as many choices as you like. I don't know a few of them though it has to be said. Hutchinson bet at Hackney I think? Not sure could be wrong about that. I'll give a shout up to Nigel Flowers as well, I used to bet with him at Milton Keynes whenever I went there and he was always very fair with me. He'd put up a price, I'd suggest another and we'd meet in the middle Laugh

John Power & latterly Ronnny Bazell used to love to say "Down to Boy" as a semi-derogatory remark Plain

Stow, we all started out 'down to boy'. In my case I was promoted to 'down to me' when I was about 19 after serving my 5 year apprenticeship.

Slippy the bloke with the beard was called Richard lovely fellow bet w.o on cheapside those were the days ,tony kemp, sidi, and brian 2 sadly departed ..

speaking of departures Richard made a spectacular one, he had been having a bad run against us

he put up a dog 7-2 a dog without, I think it was called frankies memory ,after the joint was nearly knocked on to the track in the rush ,the dog opened up 5-4 straight, needless to say it
**** up.Rich paid everyone out didnt say a word ,then when the last man had been paid ,the bag
was suddenly launched 50 foot into the air narrowly missing my mate daves head who had been clerking for him, on its descent ..Richard bid us all a clourful farewell and disapeared under the stands never to be seen at the don again ,he was a true gentleman I often shared a beer with
him he loved a drop of scotch and would twiddle the beard while drinking it,he was well known for
a bit of credit and the saying going in the bag, meant a sub from richard I had a few in my time Laugh last I heard he was involved punting on the all weather and making a few quid ..
hope hes well ..

Nice story nanny, I liked him as well hence him making my top 6. He was always so chilled out and laid back like me, apart from his parting salvo that is! I hope he's in good form as well and hope someone points him in the direction of this thread at some stage to show he is not forgotten by the Plough Lane faithful.

i'm john jenkins, i used to trade under the name john power at the dogs. i was a big layer but being big doesn't mean your a good bookie. bookies, the same as punters bet to their pockets. rafie magnus was a very good bookie although he played small. often a bookie gets a 'backer' and plays bigger than he did before, normally 'tearing it up' just to fill the odd up. thats not being a good bookie, thats being a mug bookie. Dougie Tyler was a good  bookie a bit hard but ce'la'vie.
my top 6 in order are;
               Me.
               rafie magnus
               dougie tyler
               del nash
               tony morris
               Paul gilliat

The game in your day was a light year away to the one that exists now J.J. The old school layers like many that have been named on here were in a different league to the current incumbents.

not a bad top six there john but i think your brother deserves to be in there as well, would make top spot for his sense of humour also poulter from hove was a strong layer in his time, anyway the games gone now and the keyboard warriors on here have not got a scooby about the game and if they ever saw you and tom in action re harringay, wick, stow etc then there opinions might be worth something

Goggles, what’s to know?
People like to bet, people like to be entertained, people like to win, people like to see other gamblers testing characters like the Viking or Humphreys with large bets and people like to see the reactions and outcomes.
Everyone is allowed an opinion, including you but don’t confuse yourself into the belief that yours is the only one that counts.

I think you'll find that the very core of the greyhound forum have all been there, done that and got the tee shirt if you actually read the threads properly.

if that is you, hope you are ok...a good grafter, dogs and horses..I liked it when you two were about,a bit of action...a good market and good bookies bought good gamblers, the quality of the racing came second

Xero
Geoff worked mainly for Alf Nathan at White City and Harringey, possibly John White after Alf passed away...he then worked for the Tote after Mick Harvey, first in the office and latterly on the course in their credit shops....died too young....nice guy

By:

When: 08 Oct 10 05:49
have never been told 'no fractions' on course.... ask and always get laid....  was it the (seemingly lesser) appeal of the dogs, the evening opening of betting shops, a much wider array of of spending possibilities, the professionalisation of bookies (limiting punters etc) or a general decrease in betting turnover that initiated the decline that we all bemoan? one thing i know for sure, anybody ive ever taken to a dog track (parents, mates, gf etc) that wasnt a 'dog person', always thought the conditions were very average at best....

"celticgr"...........Someone told me that when Tom Alsop (Stanley" returned from commanding his motor torpedo boat during the war, Hector Macdonald informed him that he had lost his pitch at White City because his attendances were not up to scratch.

Tom was still betting there at the last meeting.

Mad Dog,He used to wear sandals with no sosks in the mid winter when the snow was on the ground.Tommy and Freddie Allen also on the firm at different times.Tom spoke up for and helped people through his influence in the game, surprisingly at times,a good man in my opinion was Tom Stanley.

Nice guy Hector eh!
what a miserable sour face he was,how Peter Buffoni put up with him for years I dont know
Never knew Tom Stanley was on a torpedo boat,no second chances  there, never rucked when we did him up,that Alan was a strange guy but a true gent, what he had against socks I suppose we will never know
Didnt put Tony Morris on the list as felt he was all one way...his,whereas The Viking wars were interesting have no doubt Morris would have made the most of it,Duggie Tyler much the same,no charm or charisma

Maybe we should have a most miserable bookie list?

I forgot about White SS, I never bet with him at the dogs or horse meetings. You're right, he wins in a canter.
