Alan Roberts Brough Park would lay you a 7.5k for 3k and leave unchanged, wonder what he is up to now anyone?,Matt Steele another at Brough/Gosforth who wasnt afraid to lay a decent one and always went by his own tissue,a strong market at one time like many other tracks.

Dave Richardson at Catford was funny, looked like James Bond with his Earpience and shades. Cant have been easy betting Next Door to JH. Only ever bet with Humphries or Richardson in the main ring.
|
|
By:
John Humphries - I wouldn't piss on him if here was burning in the street. Tony Morris, I hope he didn't suffer in death but would still the rob the shirt you were wearing! Top six? Don't make me laugh.
|
|
By:
Richardson didn't bet next to J.H. Crawley did. Crawley was ok, he had three dogs on show on a good day but he did what he had to do to earn a crust and would take a bet as and when it suited him but ultimately bit the dust,I liked him personally. Merde, engage your brain before posting. That is a truly disgraceful post by you.

Ted Hegarty has to be up there, will lay virtually anything, the 2 juniors will lay a decent bet also....
William King at Shawfield was fearless as well any time that was up there(admittedly at opens/Scots Derby final night) Who was the main book at Reading?(Cant think of his name, been to Reading twice down the years) Brgds Johnny |

LOL at the people mugging off humphries, successful business man and bloodstock owner. Pumped back thousands into the game via sponsorship and if you never tried to bend him over was and is a man of great honour.
Hang your heads fellas, the man has been superb for the game and the london tracks in particular. He is a true gentleman. I hadnt seen him for a few years and was a reg with him at Catford, Went to Crayford had a couple of scores for interest 3rd bet, was a lump on the top taking out 4 figures, he looked thinking wtf, smiled and called the bet. The ring was dead and it was a night meeting. The dog came back bigger and as always from Catford days i was paid best price in the ring. John Humphries, is and will always be a good bookmaker and decent bloke. If you are connected with a kennels that have tried to bend him over then "YOU GOT NOTHING!!" as the great man used to say. |

By:
Slippy with due respect Dave went next door to JH. Maybe after your time but to say he didnt is just factually incorrect. When Del was his floorman and JC was JHs floorman.
Thanks. |

In the last 10 years or so at Catford, DR was indeed next to JH and used to deliberately turn his back on him. That was until the great Track closed in 2003.
Fact is that ( NOT Open Race Nights) 65% Punters backed in the Popular Side and not with the 4 Main Ring Layers, which included Messrs JH and DR. That was partially due to the fact that the other side may have had only 3 Books but one was "Without" and the Punters knew on the Cheap side that they could be 11th backing a dog and dstill be on as the Bookies knew the Punters would walk round the Main Ring with its 4 Layers betting "straight" instead of the 2 betting straight on the Silver Ring. |

Fair enough K.D., I stand corrected on the latter days but Crawley always stood next to JH for years but you are obviously right in that the order changed later on. As T.B. says though, lots of people migrated over to the other side, myself included as I prefered it as did countless others. I was at Newmarket when J.H.'s Where Or When won a group race and when he saw me he greeted me like he always did, with the utmost civility and respect. A proper bookmaker as was the great Tony Morris.

I know its all about opinions but with over eighty years of experience in dog racing I would put up Phil Earle and Bally Dias against any one.Jackie dias was good but he learnt all he knew off of older bruv Bally who was the guvnor.

Going back a few years, but the betting rings at Clapton & Harringay were really strong with absolute chunks changing hands.. mind you most tracks of that era 60s/70s/80s were all strong markets as the crowds were there, sadly not like today when the books are not favourites to win so are somewhat reluctant to take part !!!
|
|
By:
No disrespect to Tony Morris or John Humphries, but I also never liked to play with them, as it was all one way.. their way !! and always tried to play head games with the bigger punters.

I remember those old London tracks well, Gilliatt at Harringay used to lay us some lumpy bets,in fact I cannot recall many problems getting on in that era.

Emmet hegharty always have a laught when we go over each year fro the harlods cross puppy derby and the irish derby. Always lays us 'Durham Boys' crazy prices and never complains when he has to pay out.
I also reme, ber back in my youth watching Freddie Williams take some astronomical bets about an irish dog on Scottish Derby finals night. He laid this dog for 'Stupid' money at 4/1. After taking what he could i went n asked for my mere £5 win lol. He wiped the price of and opened back up at 5s, they nearly knocked me over again. He was adamant the dog couldnt win and wanted to take it on. You all know the rest of the story. . . . . . . the dog gets well and truely beat n big Freddie goes homw with a rather large smile and a rather larger wallet. I'l always remember that night. FEARLESS FREDDIE i think they called him. He was a proper Bookie |

1/ Technical ability: Tony Morris
2/ Charisma and great for the betting ring: John Power 3/ For 15 years at Romford/Catford surviving with a pea-shooter and having the financial muscle of an asthmatic ant: Tony Byerley. Numerous others deserve a mention in dispatches, to be fair. |
