Slippy B., a decent mention to Wally Harrison there. Win or lose a good man to have a bet with.
By:
Wally was a lovely man Compulsive, a proper bookie and an absolute gentleman, may he rest in peace.
By:
Slippy, very much so. A story. As a regualr at that time in the cheap ring at Catford, I (along with many others) backed the last winner of the night. I got in the q for pay out and Wally whispered to me "havn't got enough to pay everyone out, could I pay you on Saturday night"?
No problem. Saturday came, normal meeting, arrived about 8.30 after a couple in the Copperfield. Wally was not standing for some reason. Thought no more of it thinking I would see him Tuesday or Thursday. 10 minutes later on the terrace he appears with a worried expression, concerned that he had not paid me the winnings as promised. After that I always bet "down to gent" with him. A true old school gentleman bookmaker. |

"Compulsive"..........The "pipe & beard" man bet for Dave Richardson. He also clerked for him on the racecourse.
Roger Allsop took over from his father,Tom, at Wembley under the "Stanley" banner. Tom also had pitches at Stamford Bridge & White City........."The Duke" clerked for him. |
By:
how about the WITHOUT bookie at hove peter gordon and the doyen of the without the jolly PAT SHIPPER
By:
Interesting thread I remember when Artur Stanley, Peter Gordon and Pat Shipper(betting without)all bet on a packed cheapside at Wembley. Those were the days.
By:
"Gal".............I have never had then opportunity to put you right before.
Pat Shipper did NOT bet without the favourite, but when he retired & moved to Spain, the Wembley bookmakers allowed his workman, David Rogers, to carry on betting on condition that the pitch was moved into the p-ssh-le. The only way that Dave could compete was to change to betting without. He carried on using Shippers joint for ages. |
