Heres an odd one for you, is Watford still a football ground???
The GRA ran BAGS racing at Watford football ground. The dogs were trained at Northaw. |
By:
"Phil"..............Watford was a two bend flap long before it became NGRC. By the way, the two bends around the corner flags were square........just like Exeter.
The 1954 Derby winner "Pauls Fun" was beaten there when it came down from Doncaster. |
By:
Thats correct - the dogs were not originally trained at Northaw, only Haringay White City and Stamford Bridge

We were once lucky enough to get a triple dead heat there.....the dog made no mistake at Watford on the Saturday. |
By:
Chris, there were several more close to home. Sheffield used to have three tracks, Darnell,Sheffield Hyde Park and Owlerton, there was a track in Rotherham,(very tight wall of death), and one at Wombwell,The three Sheffield tracks all used to have to run the same days, (Tuesday and Saturday from memory) so the starting times were staggered to let the punters go to more than one.
By:

"Philbet"........The name does not ring a bell. If I come across any information whilst I turn through my old "Greyhound Owner" copies, I will post it.
My direct knowledge "oop North" only extends to Lancashire in the 1950s & South Yorkshire from about 1970, when I went to work in Barnsley. I well remember my first visit to Owlerton, when Harry Crapper took in one of my dogs. |
By:
"chrisjake"..........What part of the Country are you most interested in ?
By:
Wigan (Poolstock) closed in 1973........they raced on a Saturday afternoon & I once took a dog in that was getting 9 yards start in a handicap (450 yards ?). The dog went further & further away....it was my job to catch him at the pickup & get him to the van for a quick getaway. I was told that when it was backed, it went from 5/2 to no offer rather quickly.
Wombwell (Hough Lane) closed in 1972. Warrington, where I took an excellent flapper to get some runs on his card, before he did a 30.26 at White City, closed in 1956...just before I left Manchester to return South. |
By:
here's another old flapping track for you oldies on here,
rochdale, not sure if it was round the old rugby ground. |
By:
Wilenhall. A old favourite I was told about by some of the old dog boys.
