Bury St.Edmunds - king of the flaps. Strong betting market with T&F when their feet were still on the ground i.e before racecourse ventures. Good old Jay Rogers betting away till half way through the meeting when he'd have enough readies to pay the rent ! Happy days.

Best Hackney memories; cheering mine home and seeing Staplers Jo fly round there.
Funniest memory; seeing a race wrecker getting a beating for his troubles. Saddest memory; being there the night they handed the letters out to say they were closing that week. |

My first ever greyhound bets were at Hackney and Manchester White City dogs in the betting shops ,early seventies.

Woofa. Your post brings back memories. I went to the Hull track back in 1980 for inter-track v Derby. I had my largest ever bet £300 on our dog over the stayers trip. As expected it went well clear only to be picked up near the line by Geekay Hercules (a very small bitch that stayed stayed very well) Trainer Kenny had several Geekay dogs at that time.

Hi Chris yes I have done plenty of flapping, Barry Teal first started betting at Kinsley with a partner called Gallagher? He was laying bets of £200 in the 70's and 80's when some of the other 'bookies' were halving fiver bets!! I was near Whitwood recently and dont think the actual track has been built on, the pub at the back of it is there (in a fashion) and the 'New Wheatsheaf is still open The Europort never really materialised, although there are some big container depots in the area, I did not see the actual track but the last time I Google mapped it, the outline of the track was still visible.

thanks for the reply phil i had some good nights at whitwood shame whats happend to the game but thats life be lucky mate

Bets of £100-£500 were common in those days. Bookies would take them without any problem and be prepared to stand them for plenty

Aye Cleethorpes !! Speedworth international(Aldershot & Wisbech) built it on the site of the old Zoo, very narrow track all modern though with its own tote and bars etc, Busy track in the summer, ran a £1000 Derby one year the final had two lister dogs two Draper dogs and a DeMulder + a stranger from Scotland, dog in it. Flapping in its heyday.

Woofa and Pennpick, the Geekay dogs were all owned by trainer Doug Kenney and the prefix was after his son Geoff. I lived near Dougs kennels and went sundays and had a couple of dogs with him. He was a terrific old boy, aged 90 now. He had 90% bitches as he reckoned they got less injuries and had a few tiny but good bitches in his time. I learned a lot from Doug and eventually took out my own licence with open dogs, when he retired. He used to be at Leicester, Derby and finally Nottingham. He galloped is dogs up a steep hill and they were always very fit.
Hoping Geoff is going to be ok as front page of the Leicester Mercury tonight is about Geoff and his fight for life after being taken seriously ill on a cruise and being operated on in Russia. |

Was only talking about Doug Kenney and the steep hill up which he galloped his dogs at Nottingham last Saturday.

Thanks Penpick and LesterLad. I'm pleased to hear Doug Kenney is still going strong. Sorry to hear about his son though. I used to go to Hull in the early 80s and remember the inter-tracks wityh Derby very well. They had no opens so the inter-tracks were the highlight of the year for me. I particularly remember Geekay Patch as I mentioned before and a stayer called Lois Lane. Happy days.

What took the place of Penny Cross?
What about Wisbech? Canterbury? Harringey - sainsbury? Ipswich? Bury St Edmunds Edgeare Straight? |
|
By:
Poor old Geoff Kenney is very ill at the moment. It was in the paper last week. Does not sound good at all. I often see him on Saturdays after he has wasted his afternoons watching the Blue Army. Hope he pulls through.

BLACKPOOL - The Swift Hound got its name from the former dog track which originally stood in its place and therefore a greyhound racing theme runs throughout the pub. This is the ideal place for a great night out, with us offering a fantastic meal and at the neighbouring Odeon you can take in a movie.

Dunmore Park - Houses Remember going to the latter as a kid, a dog named after me won whatever their biggest race of the year was, I think it was around 1990-92 - is there any old greyhound archive sites where I could look up this dog, was sold I think to someone in the North East of England, was called Marks Brilliant... |

By:
Monmore man - the irony with Leicester was that we all assumed it was safe as the site had a covenant on it designating it for leisure use only. The council/developers just changed the covenant somehow to get around it, but we were promised that a new site would be definately found. Once the bulldozers were in everyone seemed to forget about the new site funnily enough
